@Yosei - Chapter 32

I'm starting to like this Vincent Valentine character solely because of his aloft-ness. He appears just at the right moment to save his beloved Flora & pushes all the right buttons to get Rigardo distracted. If you're hoping to integrate him more into the story, you'll need to show him beyond his emotionless, slick demeanour. He has to be as reactionary as Helen, or have a unique character like Flora, to fit into the very character-focused world you've created.

When reading the exchange of words while Flora & Rigardo were battling, of course I'm again reminded of a Chinese swordfighting serial , especially since there's a lot of talk on "why do you fight?" & "what's your reason for fighting?". Flora, as usual, is the most colourful of all your characters: the schoolteacher attitude, the compliant charm - very nicely worked. But even Rigardo is quite something, although I think his character is obscured by his repetitive dialogue. Perhaps if we ever see him again, you'll give us an answer to Flora's question. Because we never really know why Rigardo is fighting, since the answer is always & constantly delayed.

There's a Vincent-Rigardo connection? Heh, this gets even better

Whee, Chapter 33 now up... But just to answer some points. It's fitting that you observe these things in the previous chapter shelter. I have been working up to provide answers in chapter 33. Hopefully they will in large part be answered. I am hoping this next chapter now brings some passion into Vincent's character. Luckily, I have a backup author to write about him should my own attempt fail.

And on Rigardo, no kidding, I also have awaited this final development for a long time! I believe Flora's interactions with the people closest to her - Clare, Vincent, and now Rigardo - will speak most about her character.

Chapter 33: A Lord’s Redemption x Reunification

Rabona sanatorium. Second floor


“Are you sure this is acceptable? That this is safe?” muttered Vincent, staring at the resting body of Rigardo. His ragged breathing was audible through the frame that stabilized his broken jaw, and his face had been partially bandaged after his fatal injury was partially mitigated by the warden’s surgical acumen. The scalpel had removed much of the cartilage and the shards of bone that were lodged in his head, and it was a miracle that he had not died from an internal blood clot.

“He is incapacitated,” reassured Flora, having bathed and dressed in a fresh blouse. She sat beside the bed that Rigardo rested on, Vincent’s hand on her shoulder. “He will not be of any danger. Despite his supernatural offensive capability, it seems that he put all his eggs into one basket. His rate of recovery is nothing like Galatea’s, nor even Deneve’s.” Her eyes became contemplative. “I… wish to see this man through. I will not be long, my love. Will you stay?” She looked up at him. “Please. There is good in this man. Only a small spark, but that is enough for me to try.”

Vincent nodded. “Do not hurry. Now that we are together once again, my heart is no longer restless. I will wait for you outside.” He lowered himself to kiss her, and turned to leave the infirmary.

Galatea had been most reluctant for Flora and Vincent to even stay in the Lion Lord’s presence. What if he should lose himself again? Or destroy the entire hospital in a fit of fury? Flora entertained those morbid possibilities herself. But no longer did any remnant of fear lurk in her being. With Vincent by her side, she would not lose anymore.

Not now, not ever.

The Royal Lancer stirred, groaning, his voice slightly muffled through the bandages. “You are awake, Lord Rigardo,” declared Flora pleasantly. He slowly opened his silver eyes, meeting her gaze. He instinctively attempted to rise, but her gentle hands pushed him back. To her relief, he did not resist. “Do not move. You are heavily injured. Surely now, you cannot claim an advantage over me.”

“You…” he murmured, too exhausted to express his anger. “Where…”

“You are in this city’s sanatorium,” she replied, lifting a pack of ice to soothe his feverish head. “Despite your outspoken contempt for Rabona, it would be befitting of a Royal Lancer to accept the treatment he requires to preserve his own life.”

“Woman,” he audibly sighed, his eyes closing in frustration. “You are well aware of my disdain for you. I have expressed it quite adamantly. Yet, why does it seem that we are fated to encounter one another… over and over? Ever since that day I was acquiring information for Isley…”

Flora’s eyes shone. “Ah yes. That day, when I came to Rabona to teach Clare. That was when we first met...

“But I cannot forget what happened today. You hesitated, did you not? When I asked you… what pushed you so far to hurt others. You paused when I asked you that question, despite your apparent determination to kill me.”

Rigardo did not reply, his eyes strangely distant. “What is your point?”

“My point, my Lord, is that I was asking you if there was anyone whom you believed worth fighting for; any cause that you saw necessary to kill for.” She smiled timidly. “And you never gave me a true answer. I believe that is the difference between a man who is beyond redemption and a man who has lost his way.” She brightened, and beamed, smoothing back the black hair that draped down the bandages. “I believe that you are, in many ways, still weaker than me. But I also believe that your strength can serve something much greater than that of the Royal Lancers… at least, the ones you serve. Are the rulers of the boxing world not capable of more noble vocation?”

“... I… weaker than you?” growled Rigardo quietly. “Explain.”

“Instead of provoking another diatribe of venom from the ego that you have clearly not left behind, perhaps I should ask you one more time my question. What is it that has brought you so far to hurt others?” replied Flora quietly.

It was as if he refused to speak. But after a few moments, perhaps in recognition that he was now completely powerless and at her mercy, he opened his mouth and began to speak. "... Isley and Priscilla. They defeated… no, they crippled me, and it was for that reason that I became the Fourth in the Quaternity.” His eyes burned. “If I cannot defeat the boxers of Rabona, how could I ever look to Isley and Priscilla as prey anymore?”

“You felt wronged by them,” confirmed Flora quietly.

“I would kill them. I would reach a zenith of power that could overturn them. That was my all-consuming task. For that, I need all the power I can obtain. I cannot show mercy, not to anyone. But to lose to you is not what has extinguished my hope. I despise more intensely the mercy that they offered me so many years ago. I would rather that they had killed me, as a true warrior, one worthy of a silent death. But they made me a servant. They made a mockery of what my life once was. This cursed life of mine in a world that I hate…”

“A true wound to a proud warrior such as yourself,” admitted Flora, shaking her head. But then she blinked, an idea forming in her head. She was surprised why she did not think of that earlier – after all, it was the very reason why she had come to teach Clare. “But… should Isley and Priscilla be defeated by the boxers of Rabona…”

Perplexity flashed in Rigardo’s eyes.

“Would you find peace? In the dishonour of having lost to Isley and Priscilla, would you find your way once again, were they to fall… no matter who felled them?”

Rigardo looked away. “I cannot reach my ambition now. I have thrown it away, along with the rubble of your city.”

Suddenly, Flora understood what he wanted.

He wants nothing more than an end.

An end to his accursed life. An end to the hegemony of Isley. An end to the humiliation he must have suffered for at least ten years.

Her fingers brushed Rigardo’s remaining hand. “Clare will defeat Priscilla,” she insisted. “You may hate her for whatever reason, but she is the only one… who can guide us to victory against Isley. And I mean not you alone; she is the only hope all of us possess.”

For a moment, it seemed as if he had sunk into despair. But his voice was still audible. “It seems I have no choice but to charge you, and the others... with the defeat of my master.”

Flora smoothed back his bandages, smiling. “You have made the right choice, Lord Rigardo. You will not be disappointed.”

A tranquil, peaceful quiet settled upon the two combatants. It was as if they had come to a settlement.

No. It was as if Rigardo had come to terms with himself, if only partly so. Silently, he raised his severed right hand, staring at it. “You… did this to me, did you not?” he asked quietly.

“My apologies. It seems you will be unable to fulfil your contracted fight with Clare.” Flora paused, gazing at him. “Forgive me. But your rampage was unacceptable in light of the harm you could have inflicted on innocents.”

“Enough,” murmured the other, his eyes clouding over. He lowered his hand, overtaken by his own thoughts. “When I have recovered, I will leave this city. I will not serve to cause trouble. It seems my defeat has been total, and that I must rethink my outlook on life.” He looked at her. “I need not hear anything past Isley’s defeat. I need not hear anymore of your rebuke.”

She lowered her head, slightly upset. “You despise my presence that much?”

“No,” he replied, almost immediately. “But it seems… you now perceive me almost as some student of yours. Some childish student who needs reform.”

“We all must learn new things. That is how one grows stronger. If nothing else, remember that.” Flora nodded. “Well, then… take care,” she said quietly, rising from her chair. “I will bring you some hot soup tomorrow. The early mornings are cold.”

She moved to the room’s exit. She turned the doorknob, but then paused to smile at him. “I hope we can depart in peace. I trust that you will place your full faith in our capacity to defeat Priscilla. Consider that my promise. Good night to you, my Lord.”

As she shut the door behind her, she could have sworn that she glimpsed a faint, long-forgotten glimmer of gratitude and peace in the Royal Lancer’s eyes.

At last, it had come to a closure. Vincent stood several feet away from Rigardo’s ward, his arms crossed and standing against the wall.

He turned his head to look at his wife, who had closed the door, and their eyes locked. She breathed an audible sigh. Before the lock had even turned in place, she had tumbled into his arms, exhausted and fatigued. His arms were all she needed to forget everything – the battle of Rabona, bare-knuckle boxing, even Clare. Her eyelids closed in bliss. “Master Vincent. My love. You came at a timely moment. You returned to me.”

He remained silent, his dark, intense eyes staring fondly into her pools of tears.

Their lips locked, and joy surged through her body as the embrace that she had longed for so many nights at last descended upon her. His red cloak. His hard leather. It was all coming together. The thin lips that brushed along her nose, her tearful eyelids, licking away her loneliness and pining. The gloved hands that held her tightly, terrified that she might leave him again; that their individual journeys would separate them once more.

It was time to cease the excuses. She would have him, and no one would stop her.

Vincent understood the language of her body, the squirming, the impatient pushing, and the childish mew that issued from her flushed lips. “Flora. Come with me tonight,” he whispered, hugging her tighter to him, sifting his fingers through her light, wavy hair.

This horrible loneliness…

She was lonely too. “Oh, yes, my husband,” she assented, as he lowered his head, and began to kiss her neck. “Let me take you to the inn where I am staying.”

I have no desire to return home now.

As long as he is here, he is my home.

Midnight


They were all too exhausted to return home after the titanic battle against Rigardo. It was only fitting that they find some bench, some mat, or perhaps some free space on the floor to sleep away the night.

Unable to close her eyes, Clare sat huddled in the corner of the dark hall of the Academy, observing Rabona’s boxers snoring quietly in the tranquillity of the largely unharmed gym. Helen lay sprawled against the wall, in a position natural only to her. Deneve and Jeane both lay reservedly on the ground, flanking Miria’s slumbering form. Clare envied their ability to fall asleep so swiftly. It was as if it was a skill in itself.

Raphaela and Clarice will be coming tomorrow. It might surprise them to see us like this…

“Can’t sleep?” murmured Galatea, turning Clare’s head. The coach too, sat, but on a bench, with Cynthia’s head in her lap as the lightweight reclined on the wooden bleacher. “I forgot to congratulate you… I’ve forgotten many things.” She beamed, and through the darkness, Clare could make out her smile by the moonlight that shone past the window. “I would never have imagined that you, even together, would topple a Royal Lancer. I am beginning to believe the unbelievable. And that time may be just around the corner.”

“What time?” mumbled Clare, hugging herself.

“The day… when Isley himself is defeated.” Galatea nodded. “Yes. You have come so far; you are beginning to surpass my teaching. Let us simply say… that I expect great things of you, Clare. I am proud… that you came to Rabona to box.”

Clare blinked. Was this woman truly Galatea?

Nevertheless, such praise…

She looked away, shying away from her coach’s warm affirmation. “I once wanted only revenge for Teresa. Now I believe I’m part of something greater. I want to topple Isley, and restore honour to the boxing world and the Royal Lancers too.”

“Such ambition,” chuckled Galatea quietly, stroking the sleeping Cynthia’s hair. “That is something that has always endeared you to me.

“Now, get some rest. Since we’ve taken this road, there’s no turning back.

“One down, three more to go.”

Flora’s room


The bed was warm, soft. Like his body. A strange tension, a tautness that is at once protective and needing protection.

Her invitation was that of a coy smile, slender fingers first undressing him slowly, leisurely. Eyes shut, as if to surprise herself. He silently moved to help her.

Stop. Let me do it.

Yet by contrast, he tore off the lingerie, the oppressive cotton panties, carrying her over to the bed, her soft legs wrapped tightly around his waist, pressing against him firmly, imperiously. The teacher had made a student out of him, given him a lesson in the mindfulness of burning desire, but like a rebellious troublemaker, he had ignored her, igniting his attention on her alone, on her beauty, her sweet voice, her trembling flesh. He took her body, her almost illusory body, surprising her with his passion. He devoured her, those white breasts, those slender fingers, pressing down on her, making his home within her. Her fragile body terrified him, and she had been weakened further in her battle against that despicable Royal Lancer, so he feared that he could hurt her.

For several minutes, as they abandoned themselves, they did not speak. And Vincent…! He only sighed, cried, wept, moaned. Never had she seen him so unhindered in emotion. His hands were marvellous, exemplary, infuriatingly perfect. He played with this teacher’s body, turning it over, and covered it with his lips, his eyes, his nose. His lovemaking quickened, heightened, strengthened. His strength poured into her, just as she had prayed for him to do so when she fought the fight of her life. Now it was over, and there was nothing left but the two of them.

She smelt of the wild flowers that she always ran past in their old home, he, of the sea salt that comes from many days, months, years of weary travelling. The sea, immense, going, thrashing, receding…

Coming.

She begged him to do it again, and again. Vincent… hide yourself within me.

The pleasure that made them clench their teeth and shut their eyes tight. They pressed their faces against each other. He received her tears, her anger, and her sorrow. Her joy, her welcome, her devotion. He pulled it all to him.

The supreme elegance, the exquisite, sumptuous taste of their bodies together. And then as suddenly, he apologized, choking back tears. “I am so sorry,” he had said. “Your pain is all my fault. My doing. I have brought this heartache, this unsatisfied yearning upon you. And it has taken me so long to…”

She told him. She told him that she had no regrets, no apprehension in her choice to share half of her destiny with him. But even as she assured him with her words, her lips, her breasts and her hands, his hands still trembled, as if the guilt was too much. But of course, she realized. It was he who proposed marriage, he who confessed his desire to halve his soul in her name.

Come over to me. Possess me again.

This was not over.

After they had clasped at each other in climax, after they had attained the peak of their meditation, they would need to talk. They would need to rest, to recuperate in the invigorating scent of each other. And they would need to speak of their future.

At the very least, as he now pressed down on her protectively, taking her in his arms, the promise of life and death was made.

That they would love one another until death.

Flora is now officially on the road to sainthood.

I know it must seem a bit surreal to have Flora and Rigardo like that when in the canon manga Rigardo literally rips Flora in half without even speaking, but the reason I chose this path of storytelling was because it presents, within an AU, the alternative aftermath of what would've happened if Flora had survived her greatest battle. In that sense, this is my greatest tribute to the character: that she survives and lives on.

PPS. quite proud of the sex scene... probably the furthest I can get without receiving a warning here

Well I should be very critical on this, since I "am" the first to read this. I say you handle chapter well beyond recognition. Very beautifully crafted.

Though... since I know Vincent Valentine better, after all I am the original creator of this pair Flora x Vincent. I suggested him to be Flora's husband since I see Flora and Vincent too vividly, that it haunts me everyday.

Now I'd say this, you did Vincent's character well... if it were a test I would have given you 86%. The thing about Vincent is that there are three expression that Vincent never showed: crying, yelling (unless it was a person's name), and laughing. I was thinking it over when you mentioned "cried" and "wept" and I recalled... there was never a scene of him crying.

Vincent Valentine is an enigma of darkness and fire. I find it unorthadox for him to cry or weep.

Since this is Claymore and not Final Fantasy fic, the scene was good. An expression I did not expect.

But you got Vincent down to the last detail in everything else. I'm impressed despite the "crying" part, since you didn't know him well than FFVII AC. Keeps his arms cross, I can sense the monotone of his voice in your writing immediately

Chapter-wise... as I stated before. Very beautifully crafted. And the passion was what I would define Flora x Vincent. Vincent is vicious, Flora only bathe and got new attires only to be ripped apart a few hours later XD.

Though... you have only written Flora's clothes being taken off. So I presume he kept his clothes on and used the fly of his pants only XS?

I'd say you see the way I see Flora and Vincent.

Wonderful chapter....

When I read your spoiler. I was mortified when you described Flora being killed "like that" Rigardo's claw did not punctured through her. I cannot stand the thought of her being in "two"

Yeah that movie... FFVII Advent children... I actually didn't REALLY know what was going on when I watched it. And that was years ago too hey, such is my ignorance of FF... I watched it because it was awesome in terms of the action and stuff. But yeah... I am treading a path between making my characters multi-dimensional while making sure the Flora x Vincent is your Flora x Vincent. Some readers don't like a character with only one face, so I try to make them reveal something else... only in special situations, of course (such as during lovemaking). But the rest of the story will have him being stony-faced ^^

And since I got 86% I think that balance has been achieved.

@Yosei: I said this before and say this again, you sure like to write a lot in such a short amount of time. As for the chapter, I thought it was cool to have Rigaldo and Flora talk like that. I thought it was funny thinking about all of the Rabona fighters sleeping in the gym like that. Especially Helen.XD

Hey guys, since this is a pretty open, friendly thread about everything fanfiction, I thought I'd start this mini-discussion.

I can't type without music. Music really helps me picture the mood of the setting and scene I'm writing, sometimes even the dialogue. I would be interested to hear what kind of music genres/songs you listen to when you write. Mine, currently, is European classical (in my previous stories it was rock).

Below you will see the tracklisting on my Itunes that I crank up whenever I write this current boxing fanfic. I reckon if you listen to a writer's "theme" for a character, you'll get a general idea of how that writer portrays that character. Hmm, interesting. I listen to music when I type stuff up too. It helps me think of how to set up a scene or an event that happens in whatever I write.

I mostly listen to rock, techno, some jrock and jpop, orchestra, and a few just plain crazy songs (like Mortal Kombonk ).

Damn, I let the long weekend pass me by, totally forgot about my fanfiction. I'll probably have it up next weekend. I just hope that doesn't end being another broken promise, I already have enough of those.

Well at least I have the title down, my next fic is going to be called Training Days. Not very original, but I think it's good for the story I have planned.

Also, sorry I haven't been very active here, it's partly (well mostly) because I've been more active on NarutoFan recently. I haven't forgotten about you guys though, or this forum. It's the first forum I joined afterall.

I still lurk here a bunch though.

A DISCLAIMER: I renamed the actual tracks themselves for my own creative purposes. They are composed by other people and compiled in actual proper albums that I don't own. So I have kept their Artist and Album names. However, the track names are different. So I think that's still allowing intellectual integrity to the composer. I'm constantly updating this list.

Yeah I listen to music a lot too, even when I write. I don't think you would want to listen to the music I do though. The genre's I listen to are rock, hard rock, classic rock, mabye some disco, old school hip-hop, now that music you would probably listen too but, I really like metal, classic metal, heavy metal, death metal is okay too, speed metal, and dark metal. A lot of this type of music is fast and I think you could tell whenever I'm listening to any kind of metal music because it makes time feel quicker and thats what makes some of the chapters in my stories quick because of what I'm listening to when I'm writing I bet.

@ Nobodyman: Ah, techno, cool. I like Japanese pop, although I have no idea what they're singing. :P some English and Chinese songs really rock for writing fanfiction though. I've been experimenting lately - in my first fanfics it was mostly Chinese and English pop and rock, now I've switched almost completely to orchestral.

NarutoFan is pretty huge I heard. I dunno, this is like, the only Anime forum I ever hang out consistently in. I tried to sign up for HiranoMoe forums because I love Hellsing but the webmaster is slack and hasn't verified my account

I have to say I'm not so warm on the death/doom/speed/dark metal, I'm too softcore for that. But I have quite a bit of rock on my Itunes (thx to my friend), and he's got this band called "Agalloch" which is actually great because it mixes folk guitar with other things to create a surreal European feel - good for Claymore.

@Yosei: I thought you probably wouldn't like my music too much. I checked out some songs of that band called Agalloch. I thought it sounded really cool actually, now I can see how it fits into some of the action fight scenes in your stories, and I'm not talking about the boxing fic you are making. The fics you made before, I can see this music fiiting in with all the gory battles that you created.
