Shimamoto Kazuhiko, the mangaka for Anime Tencho, was so pleasantly surprised at his character getting an unexpected cameo that he's moved to tears, as can be seen in his enthusiastic blog entry. |

I'm still trying to decide what she served.
Possible reasons for the "? ?": 1) It was unrecognizable to the twins (alien space food) 2) They were stunned it all looked so traditional and well displayed 3) maybe both... They were indeed shocked about it tasting so good. As far as Balsamic Vinegar ... I think Tsukasa just thinks it SOUNDS cool and is fun to say.... There's a classic Calvin&Hobbes comic where the Hobbes is wearing a smock to do some art... and just keeps repeating the word "smock" because he likes the way it sounds. It drives Calvin insane of course.

When I saw it I thought it was because curry wasn't served in the same plate as the rice, the way it is in other animes. (Is there some kind of rule about that in IRL Japan?)
Or maybe they were expecting alien space food and were surprised it was normal? |

Normally curry either sits next to the rice or is served on top of the rice in a bowl.... is that what those are? I'm suffering from the "indeterminate blobs of color representing food" problem.
I could point out the Cabbage scene as a reference but then I'd be guilty of over-association. But notice her cabbage's physical properties...

I got the confused part as if they were surprised to see Konata preparing something that looks like a real meal . I mean I was kinda surprised too .
And yes, it seems that Tsukasa thinks Balsamic Vinegar it's just fun to say. (Could this be, in part, because barusamikosu is a loan word?) Quote:

I've been wondering about Balsamic Vinegar too, whether maybe it sounds like some other word or whether it's just some random fetish of Tsukasa's.
Anyhow I finally had a chance to watch this epidose. I liked the texting stuff, once again I find myself totally in tune with Tsukasa when it comes to mobile phone use! However the anime shop scene was a total whoosh, I have simply never watched that type of anime, and seeing a bunch of people screaming and shouting just made me thankful that I haven't. All the product placement of Haruhi stuff etc is getting increasingly annoying too, though I suppose something like this is inevitable in an anime about an otaku. However I was mollified to finally see what looked like a somewhat pixilated Karin manga cover (though why pixillated?). I think one of the problems is, pushing Haruhi so much makes the whole thing look so 2006, these things date very quickly. Miyuki ... I'm sorry to say that her scenes were once again just a trainwreck, no wonder she only get 3.64% of the votes in the poll... I think there is in principle something interesting about her character, but they've failed to capture it. Kagami and bonta-kun really go well together, they were even dressed in the same colours in this episode and sitting in the same way. I think her love of Bonta-kun shows that Kagami really does have a soul, I find I'm warming to her even though she is the evil twin, the Mr.Hyde to Tsukasa's Dr. Jekyll.

This is easily the best Lucky Star episode in ages; it may be the best one period. It's also the first time I've actually liked the Lucky Channel portion since about the second episode. I'd also like to note that sometimes it's better not to compress an idea into some sort of catchphrase. Something like "gruff exterior but soft interior" works quite a bit better than "cool-dere".

When Kagami is curious why Konata does not employ specialized online otaku lingo and Kona boots up her computer, you see her sitting on the chair while typing. In the next scene where Kagami/Tsukasa makes their comments ($*#@#??), Tsukasa is sitting on the seat. |

A couple of notes:
- One reason I think this episode worked so well is because the music timing and leveling is so much better than it commonly has been in previous episodes. - Watching it again, the "barusamikosu" scene looks like it was ad-libbed. Best ad-lib ever? Perhaps! - And, I just have to admit... Kyuusai Before Lucky Star Episode 10: "Kagami's a fun character, but I really don't understand what most of these guys see in her." Kyuusai Five Minutes and Thirty-Five Seconds into Lucky Star Episode 10: "Oh." |
