Just watched it.
This little episode really helps paint the picture of some long term test project conspiracy. Combined with Himatsubushi-hen and the first arc of Kai and other random tidbits from other arcs, it's pretty obvious at this point. As for the Onikakushi-hen "flashbacks"... Spoiler for Why I think the flashbacks were included:

^ that is actually not really the case.
the problem wasn't the montain of treasure, but that he learned the truth not really how she should have. and since then, he got curious => magazines in the junkyard. Shion didn't have that problem because of the junkyard, and Keiichi became completely insane in tatarigoroshi, but not because of that place. basically, Rika mention of "bad place" is more likely the curiosity, which can led to tragedies. that what happened to Keiichi in Onikakushi, and that's why rena said "the curiosity killed the cat"
