Hmm, when was the last mass murder in Japan? Akihabara? I think that came after the Sarin attacks.
Fairly easy to guess when was the last one for the US, but I think it has been years for Japan.

For people looking for a collection of translated news, ultimatemegax has a thread on Twitter:

Another thread:

I have no words to express about this at the moment. Just at this time I ask people in this thread to be respectful and not get into stupid tangents about disliking some/all of their work or things like that, as it comes across as "maybe they deserved it." Nobody deserves this, so don't even go there. If you see posts like that in this thread or elsewhere on the forum, please report them so the poster can be banned.

Boy I'm mad. If it somehow ends up that this guy was an overreacting fan then modern fandom will have sunk to a new low.

This is heartbreaking. I read about the deaths, and all my thoughts go to the staff and their families.

I'm shocked. I just read the news. And really, it doesn't matter if they did this or that anime, the reasons behind it either, that's something inconceivable.

Not really relevant, but I wonder how a "fan" could do it, in such a lethal way. The arson took almost the entire building.

Dang, not cool at all.

They've certainly brought me many hours of light with their work; best of wishes goes to the victims and survivors.

That just makes it all the worse. It means some loser did it for no other reason than malice. I'll just leave it at that; someone that doesn't produce and only destroys deserves no recognition.

There will be a before and after the disaster KyoAni. Whatever we will see a great recovery or a decline is up to fate. I wish for the former.

Thanks for sharing that small kernel of good news.

It's apparently been reported that the arsonist was not a current or former KyoAni employee. Sadly I feel more confident than ever we're looking at a disgruntled "fan".

24 deaths!? My God. How bad was that fire? Was a bomb involved or something?

This is horrible. This is the worst thing that has happened to the anime industry for at least the past decade.

BBC reports that the suspect had not been an employee.

Quote:
NHK said the man had been heard saying "drop dead" as he set fire to the building.

Latest reports say the man is not a former employee and does not have any obvious connection to the studio.
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-49027178

A GoFundMe has been set up by Sentai to aid the victims.

This is such a horrible news. Japan is such peaceful place but you get these bloody nutters messing up the place. This is a hanging job for such monsters.

Prayers to those who died. May they rest in peace. My thoughts to the families and those who are wounded. May they get back on their feet quickly.

CEO Hideaki Hatta has told reporters that the studio has been receiving death threats to staff for the last few years.

Does that even happen to other studios?

IDK if it was posted before, but apparently, the suspect felt that he was "ripped off" so he committed the arson.

That's "common" enough. One of the most infamous case was Anno after Evangelion, and it wasn't just letters: Gainax had graffiti at its entrance so yeah.

Meanwhile, authorities have found 2 barrels of 20L of Gasoline, 6 kitchen knives and a hammer at the studio first floor. I have no idea what he was thinking, but there is no doubt he was about to do a massacre.

On a side note, just in case, I suggest not donating any money right now, even Sentai Filmworks's campaign. KyoAni is a private company, not part of Japan's state. As such, a sudden flow of money isn't something they can handle without care and they potentially can get accounting troubles because of that. So it is best to wait for an official announcement.
