They might continue with these filler for another month or two, it makes sense because after that comes the war part, and it would be stupid to interrupt a war with some stupid fillers, it would really ruin it. That also means next year is pure war awesomeness.

Naruto is a very different manga to One Piece, who can get away with the 1:1 ratio of a chapter of material per episode.

Naruto is a manga that thrives on describing action with its manga panels. It relies on dynamics and technique. One Piece doesn't really do that (Not that it's bad, it's just a different way to fight). There's a good amount of story in a Naruto chapter, but not enough to really make an episode. So to keep it fast-paced, you need to grab more manga material: ie. the Naruto ratio, which I believe is 1:1.5. For every episode, you got about one and a half, even two chapters worth of material.

So the answer when you start catching up to the manga? Fillers.

And yeah, they're not great, but at the same time you're not using the pro animation teams (Low budget), so you can save them for important events that happen during the manga material. Fillers will also help with practice, training up your novice animation teams.

So all in all, I'd like to see less crying. Patience has always been a virtue and there's a good reason to wait.

It doesn't really work like that, actually. The animators doing the fillers are the same that are doing the canon.
It's true that canon sometimes gets episodes done by high profile guest animators, while filler obviously doesn't, but the average filler episode doesn't look any worse than the average canon episode.

At this point I think they will do fillers up until December (reaching a total of 20 filler episodes, the same as the last filler arc) and then go back to canon with the start of the new ED in January.

Spoiler:

Also, it looks the four episodes following 256 will be some kind of filler arc to celebrate the Naruto anime's 10th anniversary. The next canon arc will most likely start after those episodes, but we'll know for sure from the new OP that starts with episode 257.
