Wow.... just... wow. That's pathetic. I could see something like that MAYBE happening in the UHL, but the NHL? Stefan should be kicked from the team for that utterly pathetic failure.

He obviously got over excited over a fantasy of winning. I like how he also falls on his arse in the process, which just fades into the background with the mistake. I'm not familiar with Hokey, am I to guess this Stefan is the team stooge?

True the puck did some wierd jump there but it really wouldn't have killed him to shoot a second earlier because it would've went in and sealed the deal. But missing that empty net was only the start. He could've just maintained control of the puck after that miss and went along the side of the boards and found someone else to pass to for a tap in. He had 10 seconds, there was enough time. And even if he couldn't convert a goal from that strategy he would've suceeded in controlling the clock and any chance for the Oilers to tie it; sure it would've been downright embarassing to mess up a chance like that, but at least he wouldn't add further salt to the injury and put his team in a position to the lose the game.
Instead what he did was desperately attempt to salvage his nicely blown opportunity on a whim by blind-side passing the puck (obviously hoping one of his teammates would be there to bank it in) right onto the tape of an opposing player. That key turnover was the sole reason the Oilers could muster that final dash to Turco with enough time left on the clock. I'll admit though it's not the worst empty net miss in the history of the sport (that honor I think belongs to the one tagged below but that's a less professional league so its not entirely shocking), but in terms of missed empty nets in the NHL Stefan wins hands down. Spoiler for lol deke on an empty net:

Totally showing that to one my friends
He was the team stooge but then Dallas took a chance on Mr. sloppy seconds Avery (god that never gets old). I think Stefan is retired now last I heard. I know the team didn't re-sign him when his contract was up and no one else took him. |
