Well, that is plausible. But I don't think Tabane is out to make new toys for her little sister to play with anymore.

Plus, I'm only letting the others 2nd shift if they already reached their skill threshold. Something Ichika didn't when Setsura kicked in. Which probably makes for a good excuse why it's a pretty bad second shift.

She held her breath slightly, the only visible trace of her annoyance being the sharpening of her glare at the three words scrawled all over her locker. In purple glitter lipstick, no less--the kind that no girl would actually wear on her face save when drunk. It wouldn't take long to wipe off, but the mess would stain the wooden kendo locker permanently. One could barely make out the name Shinonono, slathered as it was in the purple mess.

I am not going to be angry.

Her mind told her that, but still she seethed. It wasn't the first time she'd seen this insult, and by now she knew it wasn't going to be the last. This had happened at the school she went to before, and all the schools long before that. The place and people changed, but the insults didn't.

Shinonono Houki quietly opened up her vandalized locker, taking out her Kendo gear in silence. If any of the other girls in the club noticed or knew anything, they kept their silence on it. They all gave her a wide berth, not once meeting her suspicious gaze.

I will not be angry.

Slowly she encased herself in the padded armor, the memories within her retained from how far back the insult went. The Shinonono family taught Kendo for decades, and the tradition passed on to Houki as she had only a disinterested elder sister and no brothers. Her ability with the sword even as a child was exceptional, something that other students took a dislike to.

At first it was mainly from boys. Some simply could not accept being beaten at Kendo by a much younger girl. Others outright disliked her personality. The first insults began by simply calling her a tomboy. Houki's response had been simple: she kept silent and proceeded to beat them even worse.

I am not getting angry. I am getting even.

The insults did not stop then. Most simply did not say them to her face. Those who still did ensured they would never be caught--Houki could still remember rubbing wax crayon off of her desk as a child.

It all came to a head when three boys in her elementary class cornered her after school. At that point, Houki was perfectly willing to fight. The threat of punishment meant little, as she simply wanted to silence the insults once and for all.

The incident never came to that. Her childhood friend stood up for her, took the blame for the fight.

The only friend she ever had.

The noise of the judges' voices snapped her out of her memories. The kendo matches began, and Houki chided herself for allowing herself such a moment of weakness.

I must focus.

Houki tried not to fall into the old sentiments again, even as she slowly thought of someone she wished was there. Someone whom she knew would cheer for her like the other competitors had.

Because at this small competition, she was alone. No parents, friends or family waited for her.

Ichika. She tried not to think of Ichika. She could rememeber the insults and bullying, but not the faces of the bullies. The one she did remember was her childhood friend, one she had not seen for almost a decade. Houki had begun to warm to her childhood friend, began to find something she could put faith in. And yet, in a single day this all changed.

The day her sister changed the world.

Resentment. An ill will against another person's perceived slight.

Tabane, Houki's elder sister. The elder Shinonono was technological genius. Inventor of the prototype strength-enhancing suit that was now known worldwide as the "IS": Infinite Stratos. That exoskeleton, and the White Knight incident that followed, turned her world upside-down.

Not a week had passed since the incident, when the Japanese Government split the family under the premise of protecting them. To Houki, it was the family's death knell.

Her sister's fault.

Confusion. A failure to grasp the situation.

She was not even ten, and it all made no sense to her. One day she and her family were taken away. Houki did not even see Ichika before she left, much less her sister Tabane. From then on, each year was a new place and new school. Always a new situaion to adjust to.

As she grew older, even less made sense. She saw her parents less, and her sister almost never. The only contact was by phone, and Tabane would always answer in a joking tone.

Houki swore she was being mocked at every turn.

Frustration. The inability to express oneself and be understood.

The insults did not stop. From school to school, the result was the same. Houki would join that school's Kendo club, excel at the sport. But still, the insults were there. Somewhere along the path from childhood to womanhood, the insult changed from the relatively mild 'Tomboy' to the more pointed 'Bitch'.

And this time, Houki had no one to stand up for her.

From then on, Houki always wore a frown. It was much easier than having to explain how she felt to everyone. Moving from town to town, staying long enough only to complete each year of schooling. Not enough time for friends, and Houki was not interested in making any.

Anger. Focus.

Houki did not hear her name called from the judges' booth. To her, in her state of mind, it was just the same exact insult she had heard all her life. Anonymously written, people wanting to belittle her without the courage to say it to her face.

Cowards never have the courage to face you.

The mask covered her scowl as it turned into a snarl, grip tightening on the shinai as she pointed the tip at her opponent's face.

It wasn't much of a fight. She simply destroyed anyone who faced her in competition. The lesser ones tread back when Houki screamed, a terrible cry of kiai that came with a brutal blow. The braver ones stood ground only to be crushed by nothing less than her will.

A will backed by a heavy sword-hand.

Not Tabane, but Akatsubaki.... with possible speculation/implication that Akatsubaki keep giving Houki new toy because she is weak.

The pilots gathered somewhere around 0800 hours in the next morning; the location is the briefing room, comprised of Bartlett and several other trainees. However, the only one qualified so far is none other than three pilots with the title of Second Lieutenant, and so they sat on the front row, with younger trainees sat in the back.

Dan Gotanda, Kei Nagase, and the last one, Alvin J. Davenport.

“Listen up people”

We’re listening, they answered mentally.

“We’re quite short on people and as you know, the mess that is yesterday, HQ still going at it” Bartlett coughed a little “I said: Gimme some experienced pilot or let me do what I should with the nuggets, they choose the second, and so, what’s your answer?”

Davenport and Dan reacted, quite inappropriately with the exclamation “Aw shiet”

Nagase look on both of them weirdly as if nothing wrong with the statement.

“What, Nagase! We’re put into active duty you know? Plus the training from hell and-“

Jack Bartlett just smirked mischievously, he never been a by-the-book officer as far as his service history can describe. The trainees all looked at him like a father figure, no matter how inappropriate. Still, he by no means incompetent, and Genette once heard that Bartlett can turn the greenest of them into fearsome pilot.

Nagase believe with that, fully hearted. Well, it’s not like Dan or Davenport disagreed with his actual accomplishment.

“Forget it, we’re dead, but at least, I’ll die an ace” Dan shrugged, besides, did he REALLY have any choice?

Davenport clenched his hand exaggeratingly, much to everyone’s laughter.

“Well, play time is over, let’s get started with this training from hell Davenport always talking about” Nagase sheepishly noted, as if she enjoyed his suffering “Nagase, you’re not helping!” he wailed in response.

“Nagase, you will be my number two, gotta keep an eye on you, or who knows what you'll get yourself into.”

At that statement, her sharp eyes widened in shock, play time is over indeed. Even Davenport decided to shut up.

“As for you two, you decide”

Dan pointed a dime “Heads I win tail you lose”

“Okay then-What?”

“Then let’s go for the practical lesson, hangar number 1!”

“Aren’t we using Tigers?” Davenport confused as they passed the hangar where their usual plane is stored,

“Tigers? I won’t repeat the same mistake, you all going in Vipers Block 50 Plus, satisfied?”

“What?! Cool man-oh wait a minute! I sense something bad”

Block 50 Plus leaved the factory a year ago, and is a major improvement over the original Block 50. Originally, it was brought to be used by the aggressors; however, yesterday incident changed everything.

“You mean-“ Nagase gulped, managed to keep her emotion from surging as realization came to her “… I understand sir”

“You’ll all go fully loaded, fully armed, and wait until something bad happened, then we’ll take action” Bartlett affirmed seriously, he wanted his nuggets to have as many advantage as possible, besides, the top brass already gave him full authority.

Davenport put a palm to his face, looking at Dan as if he’s asking for support, but what came out is a rejection “What? He’s right”

“I hate you!”

"It's okay, I love you... r rock and roll collection"

“Okay, those people listed, head to the simulator room, Pops is waiting there. First and foremost, Hans Grim”

“Me?” Said person jumped in response, a blond-haired young man in his late teens who is even shorter than Nagase.

“If there’s any other Hans Grimm please raises hand” Bartlett said; eyes unmoving from the poor trainee “Are you an idiot? Of course I mean you!”

“No, I mean yes” Grimm had a red tinge painted on his cheek, of course Bartlett meant it sarcastically. He is the only Grimm he trained.

“Here’s the list, Grimm, bring everyone to the room” Bartlett cracked his hand, looking at his dark green camouflaged (if you can call it that) Phantom II Wild Weasel type, there’s a lot of things needed to be said about having a ground attack plane in a small island in the middle of nowhere, but Bartlett never actually think on it, he simply like the 9 year old vintage.

“Hah, I wonder if he can perform with this monster as good as you are” Dan mumbled as he studied the massive aircraft inch by inch, trying not to miss the detail.

“He?”

“A friend, he is in ISAF Navy” Dan smirked in response as his instructor approached, both of them sat in an opposing chair “He saw his first combat sortie five days ago, it goes pretty well until he run out of fuel mid flight”

“Gas guzzler, figures”

Shook his head in response, Dan once again added “No, apparently he hadn’t finished the fuel loading process before forced to take off. The details are of course, classified”

“Fun stuff, I wonder when that war will end. As far as I can remember, Continental War already more than one year long and still ongoing”

Bartlett looked at the young pilot, he’s so cheerful and calm, and yet, his eyes… his eyes have that hint of burden hidden inside.

“By the way, do you know his insignia?”

“Mobius One, apparently”

“A flight lead? Now that’s new”

“No, he hasn’t even got his squad yet, the ‘One’ part is a pun of his name in our native language, Ichi”

Their attention was drawn to Genette, still depressed due to the actions of the base commander Perrault. He just did his job didn’t he? Civilian always been the worse victim in the war. Hell, there’s no war so to speak here in Sand Island, at least, not yet… but Genette already suffer.

“Dude, cheer up!” Dan greet him with open arms as if he expecting a hug “That bastard Perrault, he will let you go very, very soon”

Genette simply scoffed at his statement, but not in a hostile manner. “Yeah, you’re right. How long can he hold me hostage anyway?”

“Well, as soon as they sorted this mess really” Bartlett said “While Gotanda was right about our honorable commander” Bartlett put an emphasis sarcastically
“There’s good people in the high up, trust me”

“Else Osea won’t exist this long, sure”

“That’s the spirit, Genette! Then put yer ass on that plane, Gotanda” the old captain pointed as several towing vehicle pulled the majestic, shiny new planes out of the hangar.

Genette swore that Dan was almost squealing as he ran toward the plane with helmet in his armpit “Yessire!”

The ground shook violently, rocking even vehicles off their balance as personnel began to look around for the source of the quake. Just then, the quake grows stronger and the ground is suddenly riddled with energy pellets from underground.

*BOOM*

“GYAAA…!”

The explosion sends personnel throwing their bodies onto the ground as a silver-white Infinite Stratos, Silver Gospel, blasts out of the hole in the ground. The IS ascends to the sky and hovers in invert, scanning military vehicles in the area before targeting the unoccupied ones. The Silver Gospel spreads out its metal wings and energy pellets gradually form around them accompanied with soft humming.

The IS throws its arm forward and the pellets immediately rain upon the targeted vehicles, riddling them with holes and blowing them into smithereens.

“Ergh…!”

“Silver Gospel…? But why?”

“-All units, this is Tower. Be advised we have a berserk Infinite Stratos on the loose. I repeat, we have a Code One alert threat in the base.-”

A couple of M1 Abrams battle tanks enter the scene and turn their turrets towards the Silver Gospel.

“-This is Prowl One, targeting hostile IS.-”

“Wait! Don’t!”

*BOOF*

The Silver Gospel turns its body away and dodges the shell. It looks back to the tank and raises its arm towards it, summoning more energy pellets on its wings and sends them converging on the lone tank.

“Get out of here—!”

The energy pellets riddle the tank’s caterpillar tracks and destroys them, rendering it immobile as the other tank reverses away while furiously firing its machinegun at the IS.

*DADADADADADADADA*

“-Prowl One’s down! I’m pulling back! Damn it… Damn it!-”

Dodging every single shot fired towards it, the Silver Gospel sends its energy pellets towards the retreating tank and destroys its caterpillar tracks as well. With the tanks immobilized, the IS lands on top of the lead tank and plants its left foot on the turret top while bending the turret upwards.

“-She’s on me…! Two, take the shot!-”

“-But the explosion will…!-”

“-Just do it!-”

The Silver Gospel sees the other tank aiming its turret at it and jumps off, generating more energy pellets and firing them upon the second tank.

It's a good thing Dark Souls helped me with fight scenes The whole "Intensity, hopelessness, and other things" are barely in any other games since most are so forgiving.

Side note - I wonder what draft I sgould make next.
