I may be wrong, but from what I remember back during the Flask Plan arc and before, the manga was always at the lowest spots in the popularity polls, but afterwards he started rising considerably...which coincidently is when Kumagawa started showing up.
So yea, if I remember correctly Kumagawa might have saved the manga almost by himself.

Wow, it's actually kind of impressive that the author was able to create a character that was popular enough to save his series.

Its a masterpiece from its begining to (hopefuly) end. I think the manga actually got really popular in the latest arc, and as far as i know Kumagawa hasnt been that big of a factor in it, and besides this manga was popular even in the begining of it, even though there wasnt any Kumagawa....

Actually, early on, it spent most of its time in the bottom five in the rankings. It didn't really pick up steam until Kumagawa was introduced, followed by Ajimu.

Wasn't that because of the Genre shifts that followed their introductions, added to the appeal of the characters?

The genre changed from slice of life/gag to a battle manga when the Public Morals Committee leader Unzen was introduced. But the genre change wasn't enough to boost its popularity until Kumagawa was finally introduced after the Flask Plan/Class 13 arc.

And taking into account the landslide victory in the popularity contest, it's safe to say, Kumagawa saved the manga because really...it was probably one short arc away from being cut. I remember having multiple discussions about it being cut next back then, especially considering that back then multiple manga were starting meaning that they wouldn't be cut until their chapter 12, but it managed to hang on. It's not really that uncommon for a single character to save manga when it is down in popularity, but it is really hard to pull off so props to him for coming up with Kumagawa.

I do wonder though, why do the Japanese like Kumagawa? I mean, he received more than FOUR TIMES the number of votes Medaka received(and she didn't even break one thousand).

Grudging respect to Kumagawa for "saving" the manga though. It does sort of force the author to rely on him too much.

People seem to have a thing for the badass psychos with broken powers (Example: Alucard)

But Kumagawa gave up his broken powers, before the Second Poll, so would they really factor into it?

His popularity was already established by then. Plus even without his powers, he still had that sociopath of a personality people seemed to love. Not only that, he destroyed the middle school girls rather easily, further cementing his awesome.

That makes sense... Although while he does have some Sociopathic tendencies, he doesn't actually completely fill the profile of a Sociopath.

Well that was surprising, I'm sure it would have taken a while to be introduced.

You know, it's one thing the use a character to pull off a heroic rescue, but shouldn't he have waited a bit before pulling Zenkichi into this? Although, saying that, I am unsurprised that Zenkichi got pulled into this, he is a main character after all, and Shounen Protagonists never miss an arc.

Oh well.
