This year's eighth issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine revealed on Monday that Yūji Kaku's Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku manga is getting a television anime adaptation.

Plot Summary

The manga centers on Gabimaru, once exalted as the strongest ninja, but who has now quit his trade, violating the laws of his village. After being captured, he claims he has nothing left to live for. However, due to his superhuman levels of training, he has inadvertently survived multiple executions, from attempts at beheading to burning at the stake. The executioner Sagiri Asaemon tells him that he has lingering attachment to life, and issues him a mission to win his acquittal: to find the elixir of immortality.

Daaaaaamn, yet another manga that I now regret reading too much of. I wonder if they'll keep the R rated stuff because it's a rare case that I hope they do. This is the kind of dark fantasy that has merit to it (as opposed to the puerile edgey rape/slave fantasy teen fics people are lording over). It's like an R rated mix of Dororo and HunterxHunter

I can't say Kobayashi is doing a good job as Gabimaru. They could have Yoshino do Gabimaru instead.

Also, surprised that Aza is not voiced by Okamoto. He is such an Okamoto character. But Kimura fits too, so no complain.

A superhuman ninja who can survive basically any execution method and is sent to join a Suicide Squad out to find an elixir of immortality in Shinsenkyo so he can be together with his wife? Now there's a premise .

Pretty colorful and stylish Opening, featuring all the characters together and some really cool shots as Gabimaru and Sagiri head on their journey together .

Gabimaru's reaction as a baby to his parents being murdered basically tells me he was pretty much destined to live a very unconventional life or one where he was pretty non-plussed by everything. I mean, it's rough having your parents killed and then get raised by the village chief who killed them and then raised you as a weapon...but he didn't seem to mind all the murdering and killing up until he married said village chiefs' daughter .

The chief is a real piece of work, though. I mean, beyond what he did to Gabimaru's family, he branded his own daughter for wanting to live a life outside the function of the village, and then there's how he betrayed Gabimaru when he wanted to leave the life behind with his daughter. Gabimaru's first clue that plan shouldn't work was the fact that this guy physically harmed his daughter, there's no way he cared a lick about her being happy. Honestly probably the main reason Gabimaru has to get back to her is that I don't trust her alone with that scumbag .

The Japanese had some very creative execution methods! Even if they were all basically useless. But hey, points for creativity .

Gabimaru the Hollow lead a life of merciless and effective killing, but it wasn't until he met his wife that he learned what it meant to be truly human. She treated him like an actual person, with care, kindness, and affection (right down to giving him a tender kiss!), and he never judged her for the mark on her face courtesy of her father. In a village where men and women are only meant to serve as soldiers or to conceive children, the two of them fell in love like normal people. These two deserve to be happy together .

(Also, was his wife Mamiko Noto? Wow !)

Gotta be honest, getting killed by a beautiful and sensual swordswoman voiced by Yumiri Hanamori doesn't sound like the worst thing in the world. Though teaming-up with her might be just as fun .

Ah, so surviving all that flames wasn't just a cool visual, Gabimaru actually has fire ninjutsu! Wonder how many moves he's got ?

So Gabimaru has to join a band of convicts all out for a pardon from the Shogun by gaining the elixir of life from a place that's described as Heaven on Earth...even though the people who went there mutated into flower people. The competition will be fierce, and the land seems a danger unto itself, but Gabimaru will do anything to be reunited with his wife again .

The ED is pretty soothing and serene, minus the visuals of Gabimaru slicing everybody up. Though we've got a naked Sagiri being clawed at by dark hands too. Also Gabimaru's wife makes a cameo !

Pretty cool so far. Yes it reeks of this more "mature" shounens like Chainsawman which is a mixed bag for me but I like it so far.

This might be the very first anime out of the thousands I've watched which acknowledges that it's impossible to behead someone with a katana in one stroke. In fact, it goes against everything anime taught me, what was the point of having a second ready to behead you to spare you the pain of seppuku if it doesn't actually work?
Of course the show wasted no time introducing the famous Asaemon who can totally cleanly behead people with a katana.

But I digress. I thought it was really good. The atmosphere was particularly excellent. Great directing, great voice acting, and great storytelling. I love Sagiri's design already, and am curious to find out more about her. The fact the MC already has a wife he is completely dedicated to makes this relatively original, I expect no sexual tension between him and Sagiri and that'll be refreshing.

You can't blame him for that, he was pretty much brainwashed since he was a baby. At least he was still better than the other ninjas who were more than happy to betray him, but it's easy to guess those guys were jealous of him for having the chief's favor and most likely because he's way better than them.

So this is basically just the intro, and once he gets on the island, it's gonna be your typical battle royale to get the special item?
