Saw both episodes on TV today.

Spoiler:

They put a lot of emphasis into music and songs into this show. After all, Vivy's goal in life seems to be making others happy with her songs.

There's apparently drama and conflict between the humans and AIs. What fascinates me the most about the show is the AI behavior in this show. Vivy's character seems to be somewhat emotional cold but tolerable.

Technology in this anime also seems to be quite advanced in their world. There's also a darker tone in the second episode, that I wonder will maintain that sort of presence for rest of the season.

Spoiler for Episode 1 and 2:

First off, the anime is starting a bit slow especially with the pacing and from what I've heard elsewhere, Nagatsuki and Umehara did wrote a novelization that served as a guide while the anime was in development which was an unique approach to anime scriptwriting and it look like the story so far has been planned in advance. Starting with the visuals, I love the highly advanced setting with impressive background art design, but you forget that the story is set in Japan if it's not explicitly shown to be stated as. The character designs look somewhat realistic overall (even though I can't stand the same-face syndrome and same-hairstyle copycaste with different color scheme going on with the main characters), but they are intentionally drawn simple to show off plenty of smooth animation. Satoru Kousaki's soundtrack is great in line with the show's overall mood and he uses whatever track he thinks will fit the scene.

For the story, I'm not quite sold yet but it looks fairly promising. Vivy (then called as Diva) seems cold and distant but with the way she's talking and acting, I feel she possess an heart of gold and she's very passionate about doing things. She seems to be pacifist and wants to protect people she holds dear. Matsumoto is a clearcut logical mascot who's good at what he can as his time traveller role, but he gives me creepy Kyubey vibes and I couldn't trust him much. The generational approach to the scenario is intriguing with the "correcting history" tidbits but at the same time pretty confusing in the time setting, maybe it's my first time viewing that caused this. I couldn't keep up my pace much and although I did like the voice acting, I can't really stand how fast Matsumoto's talking is.

After watching the double feature episodes, I'm glad Vivy is getting some love from an handful of people she encountered despite the conflicting vibes around her. In the following events that will unfold, I will eventually understand her character being more than being a pacifistic songstress who cares about how others think of her. At the present this anime, which will deal with existentialism, time travel and potential conflict between A.I.s and humans, heavily reminds me of Gekidol both thematically and narratively, I'm just hoping it will be more cohesive in its overall presentation.

Just finished this. I was expecting something a bit too goofy. I think the talking bear from the trailers reminded me of some of the characters in Arpeggio of Blue Steel where humanoid AI stuff was always handled a bit... distantly. But, I gave this a chance and actually really enjoyed it. I'm glad they did a double episode launch. It gave it plenty of time to breath and build it's plot and characters and world. So far, I'm sold.

The action was good. The plot is surprisingly interesting. "Stop the AI's from winning" is a pretty standard trope, but stopping them by preventing them from getting freedom and rights is an interesting take on it. (Though I do wonder if that's not the wrong approach and if Diva will eventually do something different.)

I like what they did with the characters. Diva being somewhat cold and logical while striving to be a great singer was good. I also like that she started out as something more than just a singing robot. She already had feelings and desires. She is just... small in the beginning. Which makes sense because she's only been a self-aware intelligence for a year at this point. She's not dumb or incapable, but is highly inexperienced. It's a nice mixture they've got there.

Diva's desire to save and protect being balanced against Matsumoto's laser focused mission of saving the future is interesting. I, too, hope that keeps up. Really, I want Diva's compassion and her singing to be the thing that saves the day. (What can I say, I come from a Macross background. Singing should always save the day. :P)

A solid two episodes. Interesting plot, visual design, and dynamic soundtrack to mathc the story beats. Diva and Matsumoto make a fascinating duo as total opposites. Diva is a relatively newborn AI who acts cold and logical, but has a heart of gold. While Matsumoto acts likable and sociable, but is strictly devoted to his mission.

Damn, the ending of episode 2 was harsh. Wasn't expecting that.

This is really good, but I'm dreading how dark it's gonna get. I mean, this time they had to save someone but what if Matsumoto tries to make Diva kill someone or do some other questionable shit. To accomplish the mission, Matsumoto is willing to do whatever. In that sense, he's not better than those terrorists. But Diva is deeply compassionate. She's gonna suffer a lot if she's forced to hurt others.

I agree with Ragashingo, btw. I'm also from a Macross background, so I too hope it will be Diva's song what saves the world, rather than Matsumoto's cold machinations.

That is one inane comparison between Matsumoto and the terrorists. Diva is just as dedicated to her mission.

Everyone keeps telling Diva she's just following her programming but that sounds like obvious foreshadowing that she actually isn't that simple. Harming others does nothing to further her mission. If anything, her mission forbids her from harming others. While this mission was granted to her by programming, she clearly follows it of her own desires and feelings. In that sense, she has more in common with the terrorists, who engage in anti-AI actions because of their personal feelings.

Matsumoto, on the other hand, is not motivated by personal opinions or feelings in regards to his mission. It's his mission as an AI and he will carry it out to the best of his abilities.

Saying they'll do anything for their goal in this case is a load of misleading nonsense. Their actions are dictated by the mission in question.

I don't think so. The fact that they insist that Diva is just following her programming puts the statements itself into question rather than proving the point. Same when they said the androids can only accomplish a single mission. The show is clearly trying to challenge those notions.

What if harming others did further her mission? It is antithetical to her mission by definition and therefore not an option.

Diva is the first autonomous AI. Whatever that means. Also, not my point. You lumped Matsumoto and the terrorists together based on a vague criteria like doing whatever it took to fulfill their mission. Matsumoto's mission is to avert the genocide of humanity so he sought to avert Aikawa's death. The terrorists seek the destruction of AI so they sought to kill Aikawa. Matsumoto convinced Vivy to help him in his mission in the context of her own. It the same thing for everyone. For the sake of their goals, there are things they are ad are not willing to do.
