It is possible Ultear's own feelings on her mother are complicated. She could hate her mother for dying/abandoning her saving one of her apprentices, a particularly foolish one at that.

I also recall that in that flash-back that Gray's Sempai talked about replacing her kid (to which she slapped him), so its possible that Ul didn't even know her daughter was alive, or was forced to give her up to whoever the father was.

I believe the implication was that yeah, Ul was under the impression Ultear was dead or had to give her up for some reason or another. I'd have to re-read the arc where she was introduced to be sure, though.

The only things that were mentioned were that Leon asked Ul if he was enough of a replacement for her daughter, and Ultear told Seigrain Jellal, "She was a pitiable woman, possessed by evil and dumped by my father." She also said, "I'm just a speck in my mother's life." That's it. It's surprisingly lacking in details.

That tells us quite a bit actually, Ul was forced to abandon her daughter to the father (likely), and Ultear is under the impression she was unimportant to her mother.

The Ul we saw gave us quite a different impression, were she was far from "pitiable/possessed by evil" and her reaction to Leon's comment about her daughter showed it was a sensitive subject for her.

the translation for that is wrong. A better translation should be "she was obsesses with magic"

Basically Ul was too preoccupied with magic and Utears father left her and took Utear with him.
