True or not, Scotsmen are in uproar today. Margaret Thatcher, former British Prime Minister, has died.
Guardian Telegraph Even a cursory glance on the headlines reveal the storm unleashed. No one spares the punches as Lady Thatcher's corpse is simultaneously pissed on and embalmed in glory (both metaphorically, sadly). It's frankly refreshing. Public figures of this monumental political importance deserve to have their legacy thoroughly engaged, and none of that right honorable "civilized" decorum nonsense we've got here in the United-we-are-all-created-equal-States that ended up making marbled heroes of controversial men. |

I still think the Japanese could pull off an prequel for Girls und Panzer with Margaret Thatcher (or Roberts at that time) and Queen Elizabeth II in their Upper School days in tanks during the Second World War. I mean they were both teenagers during the war. The Queen (well Princess Elizabeth at that time) was even made Colonel-in-Chief of a unit that had Armour in it in 1942.

^ The eighties (based on my research and knowledge) were very tough times. Aside from the Falklands, which is controversial enough in and of itself, the economic reforms she put in place helped the country position itself for the following upswing.
I feel like this kind of stuff happens once every several decades depending on the government involved. Canada for example would've been in a much worse situation for decades to come had Brian Mulroney and his government not put GST in place. The question is when will it come now during this era of financial crisis /rambling comment about whether our society has progressed enough to make use of the technology known as "fiat currencies","fractional reserve banking"and"liquid debt capital markets" or are we doomed simply due to the failures present in humankind .. irrationality, emotion and lack of self-restraint

Don't forget that the Right is just as willing to blow up every little act of disapproval into a grand conspiracy of filthy working class chavs throwing shit at their betters (Daily Star: "MARGARET THATCHER HATER HAD NHS BOOB JOB"). The tabloids there are really fun. Best of all unlike our dear Fox News they have the decency not to pretend to be anything else. No "fair and balanced" bullshit that makes you want to firebomb their headquarters. Although curiously the Daily Mail, a rightwing stalwart of...impressive...reputation, isn't above cashing in on the Thatcher-hatestorm: something something NHS plot*. *In actuality, she "only" managed to reform minor aspects of the NHS system. Perhaps she knew touching it more than she did would send Britain straight into a full scale revolution. For all the vitriol the Right throws at the NHS, Britain loves national healthcare, for very good reasons that can be reinforced at will just by looking over the Atlantic at what's happening in a certain uncivilized hellhole. Although unlike willx, I hardly think Thatcher was such a wonderful economist. If public UK industries were under deep inefficiencies that really, really needed to be cleaned out, then privatization certainly didn't fix it (quite the opposite, services suffered, prices went up, the common people left out of the looting, etc.). |

Some of her administrations policies permanently changed the country and could not be reversed, like the deindustrialization and privatizations. People who are from parts of the UK that still suffer from those policies today tend not to have warm feelings for Thatcher.

They just suck now. Maybe the great coal mines couldn't be saved [in fact they most definitely couldn't have been saved], but a lot of essential utilities were sold in the 80's privatization craze. Combined with the deregulation craze, which we all know what came of it eventually, history has not been...kind...to the results. And frankly the 90's boom at least in the US is all from the computer revolution, not because these industries happened to start running more efficiently (well they did...because of computers). |

Shutting down non-viable industries like the mines makes economic sense, however it is common practice to support new investments in the affected geographical area to support employment. That didn't happen, a whole generation in the north grew up with little in the way of employment opportunities. Strategic political considerations, more than economic ones, were the driving force behind those policies. The most affected industries had powerful unions which were the backbone of the Labour party. Political power was transferred from local councils to the national level, as they were another traditional seat of Labour power. Selling council houses cheaply to the residents was a bribe to change their political loyalties. On the whole the Thatcher administration's legacy is mixed. The south benefited from the deregulation as the city of London became an important financial center but at the expense of much of the countries industrial base and increased inequality. In terms of politics it was very successful as the political landscape was completely changed. Labour changed from a left wing party in to a center right clone of the Democrats. She wasn't joking that she saw Blair's new Labor as her most important legacy. It's not surprising that traditional leftists are still furious about being marginalized. |
