Kanon and Clannad are quite popular in this genre and I think you know about those two since they're kinda popular... if you haven't give it a try, you'll never regret watching those two ^^

Midori no Hibi is a nice one also ^^

yeah, Macross's transforming vehicles does NOT fit my tastes.

Full Metal Panic covers all those bases except magic: 17 year old mercenary who has been a soldier since the age of 8 is assigned a task to protect a girl at Jindai High school.

as a part of his assignment he must attent hight school (main character has never been around anything but war so has no idea what to do) must guard her 24/7 from an unknowen terrosist threat.

FMP has Action, Comedy and Romance and is an all around top series.

Tsukune Aono is a normal high school freshman who is unable to get into any private school, due to his dad finding a form on the floor to go to the school. The only school he is finally accepted into turns out to be a secret school for supernatural monsters and mythical creatures (youkai), who are disguised as humans. The first student he meets is the beautiful Moka Akashiya, who becomes his friend for an unusual reason; not only she is a vampire attracted to the sweet taste of his blood (and Tsukune's only, it turns out), but because Tsukune was Moka's first real friend she had ever made. Tsukune quickly realizes his admission into a monster school must have been a mistake and fears for his life.......
