Like some people mistaking Ran (Kazemakase) thinking she is a he.
Yup, Maria should be a giveaway but i know some male anime characters who uses girls names....so..

She's a chick with short hair that's alll if you read the manga, it potrays her that way. But it was kind of misleading first when she first showed up, I rememer saying to myself "Hmm.... short hair but kind a cute" And as I kept reading on, I had mixed feelings what in the hell is she!? But that has all been cleared up now...

This thread is hilarious. How can you not know for certain? The only times I'm not certain over a character's sex is when a guy dresses and looks female (like in Naruto; the child who hangs around the water ninja)

It might be hilarious to you but the fact is that forums like this exists so fans can ask questions, so they will know for certain something and to discuss and confirm anything about anime.
Pls bear in mind that not everyone is as knowledgable as you.
(in the aspect of male and female anime characters,that is..)

And Yebyosh is right, Ross along with Denny Brosh is assigned to escort the brothers.

Agreed. For example, I watched nearly 25+ episodes of Hunter X Hunter before I was truely certain that Kurapika was actually a guy. He is still damn effeminate too. There were still many times that I was convinced he was a chick pretending to be a guy though.

Yea, I wasnt sure if Maria Ross was a woman either...I was pretty confused but assumed she was a woman and assumed correctly. As for Kurapica in HxH I didnt have trouble figuring out he was a guy unlike many.

Thing is this thread is not about what kind of anime FMA is. This thread is about a character in FMA. Do you see the difference?

Not quite as often as for females of course and usually in combination with a less ambiguous name, like Jon Maria.

Damn another anime has fooled me again on what sex a character is. For all this time I though Lt. Ross was a man but then in episode 23 they referred to Ross as "her" and I was like damn I was duped again!

Although I guess I should of guessed it back in ep. 22 when she hugged Ed and he was calling her his mom. I even remember having my doubts when the character was first introduced thinking it was a female but then saying nah thats definitly a "he".

Come on now guys fess up, who else out there was fooled?

Same here, it IS prettsy obviuos that Lt. Ross is a woman.
