Perhaps. Maybe because I haven't played much of them lately (or any at all), the impact is greater.

I can't convey this rightly in English, it's 純愛、あまあま、初々しい、something like that~? That feeling that makes you warm and happy inside? Not the cool or beautiful type of love, it's just......純白、 pure white. Heh, the title really lived up to its name . I hear from my friend that Yutsuki's and Sana's route is even more "DAAWWWWW" inducing....Luckily I have the PSP version though I might die of moebeetus before I finish this game .

Hey, people it seems that Project Dawn made a poll for future project translation:

-Shin Koihime Musou Moeshouden
-Galaxy Angel II
-Muv-Luv: Altered Fable
-Nursury Rhyme
-Dies Irae

Vote for the VN that you think need, or want, to be translated.

http://project-dawn.webs.com/

I put this here because it seems apropiate, sorry if I was wrong.

Scratch = No
Bold = Yes
Green + Bold = Yes with all my might.

Also if I remember correctly, Project Dawn's administrator was making a Galaxy Angel fan game but was short on support so he decided to back off. Was also working on Shuffle Essence yes?

Wow, I'm surprised that Lump of Sugar's first and arguably least famous VN made the list of choices, considering the "big names" it's up against. It feels a bit dated compared to more modern works (and probably doesn't have much of a chance in a popularity poll against some of the other choices listed), but it certainly has its moments. (In a way it feels like a prototype for some of their future games.) It'd be fun to see it translated.

Since I read too much three kingdoms (and also played various games based on the original novel), I just cannot stand Koihime Musou...

Dies Irae seem interesting.
Also fine with Nursury Rhyme/GA2 for something a little more light hearted. Only played the 1st GA: did not like it all that much (ditch the mindless 3D battles (I admit those were "cool" for the 1st few rounds) for better plot+graphics!).

After passing all routes in all 3 games in the Galaxy Angel trilogy it would be nice to see Galaxy Angel 2 translated and have a reason to buy it for the PS2.

Shin Koihime Musou I've not been quite a fan of the first one due to the boring battle system. But the second one made me open up to many the other faction's heroines. The battle system in the sequel was actually nice though, more challenging (especially during Wei's faction facing against the coalition of the Five Tiger Generals + Liu Bei + Wu), I especially liked Liu Bei, so translating the fandisc will be interesting for me with the massive harem fiesta of comedy

Not really a fan of the side-story to the Muv-Luv series. Alternative was good enough for me without a side-story.

Nursery Rhyme was probably one of the first few VNs I've played and the OP is still addicting today. So having it translated will give me a reason to play it again just for the fun of it

Dies Irae was interesting, but did not entirely get too addicted to it. Will play it again if it does get translated though.

Well, Nursery Rhyme's OP has been addicting enough to people to give it a translation chance But as you said, with the big enough competitions especially concerning Shin Koihime Musou + anime popularity + massive amounts of HCG for the perverts.... The Muv-Luv popularity might bring the side-story up a bit, while Dies Irae will tempt people with the battle royale theme. Galaxy Angel still has some very dedicated fans to bring it some support for II getting translated after Aroduc translated the first trilogy to increase its popularity VN-wise.

So yeah... Tough crowd..

Ah, I've finally spotted this section.

October has been quite disappointing for me, visual novel/eroge-wise. I feel like this year didn't have that much in store (with the possible exception of Rewrite and Eustia) and as a casual appreciator of the niche, this has me looking not too optimistically for the next.

Currently playing(played and dropped): that koiro fandisk - major disappointment (and investment), but it's probably to be expected of a fandisk. It felt very much like the osanadato fandisk with Porn without plenty of plot. I had high expectations for some hilarity after the company's efforts with the original game, too. The game had relatively shallow shoehorning-in of the other love candidates together with a disappointing after story for the originals. Aiko's route wasn't even purely hers! And the comedy ran thin even from the very start of the trunk.

Well, it may be too forward of me to make any sort of recommendations since it's such a personal preference medium, and I know that whatever is recommended someone else will hate (probably for good reasons)... but I can propose at least two "decent" 2011 games that I think should have a fairly wide appeal and be worth at least trying the trials for. They may not be "home runs", but they're at least "base hits" in my mind.

First is Clochette's Kamikaze Explorer. Now this game's selling point is rather obvious (just open the link and you'll figure it out), and that's actually why I never gave this game a chance in the first place (because, like... really? ) But, after having it strongly recommended by a friend, I gave it a chance. And to my surprise, the characters were a lot of fun, and the story was also fun and pretty interesting. The theme involves students with supernatural powers, and some minor political intrigue that causes trouble. The production values are also very high. Some might call it a "chara-ge" or "moe-ge" (which suits me okay...), but at least there's more to it than just that, so it's worth a chance even if those aren't your usual style.

Second is Ricotta's Walkure Romanze, and this is one that was just released (should get my copy in the mail shortly). I actually never played their previous game, Princess Lover, or watched the anime, but I gave the trial a chance based on the fact that two of the writers worked on a previous game I liked a lot. The funny thing about this game is that the characters remind me of archetypes from the early days of eroge in a way. The story centers around a jousting tournament, which is a bit of an usual subject (and I suppose is a plus if you like girls in armour ), but this adds a bit of tension to the story and provides a framework for the relationship with the different heroines. Again, it's not like it's totally free of clichés and you probably will see some of the twists coming... but I think it's pretty enjoyable. The production values here too are very high.

The reason I'm suggesting these is because neither one of them is in my usual "comfort zone" for eroge pre-order picks, but I think they have some appeal that transcends their target audience and many people may find something to enjoy within them. (Or you may hate them, who knows... ) Some other things to try... have you tried Grisaia by Frontwing? Or Irotoridori no Sekai by Favorite? If you're okay with an over-the-top romance moe-game, LoverAble by SMEE is top of its sub-genre (but an acquired taste for sure). I'm also pretty partial to the theme, setting and art of Sukimazakura to Uso no Machi by Propeller. And if you have a PSP, I would be remiss if I didn't mention Mashiro-iro Symphony's PSP version (which is good to play whether or not you played the original).

All in all, I guess I would say that this year has perhaps been a bit short of "blockbusters", but there have been a number of decent works in a variety of sub-genres that are at least worth giving a try. Of course, like I said before, it all depends on personal preference. As with all recommendations, always start with the trial before placing any orders.

Indeed I have tried some of the trials you've mentioned, and own your first recommendation, though it wasn't too spectacular (in my opinion at least). One positive thing for it was its refreshing lack of "deep" plot that is somewhat typical of some famous games in the niche, keeping things light and, my biggest preference, funny. While it had the sci-fi elements of a conspiracy and misguided authorities (as is expected of the setting), it didn't take itself too seriously, choosing to link it (no pun intended) to the hero/chosen heroine's powers.

I do have Mashiro-iro, but I don't own a PSP, could you please give me a rundown of what's been added there? Spoilers wouldn't matter.

Irotodori I didn't get, something about the premise was a bit off-putting (to me). The other I haven't tried.

It seems more and more fandisks are to come in the future, (one of which is the fandisc of akabeisoft's okibaganai, so I'm looking forward to that at least.

Thinking in hindsight, my favorite companies didn't have a good showing this year, in my opinion. AXL's koisuru otome was what drew me to the company, but I feel like they haven't improved on the formula in their next games. Natsuzora and Tenshin ranman were goldmines of hilarity, but nobleworks seemed tame in comparison. The mentioned were just a few examples. And nothing ever seemed to top Tayutama in my eyes, their recent one was boring (again, in my opinion). It looks like I'll be lurking other people's impressions before buying in the foreseeable future.

Walkure's graphic is quite beautiful from what I saw on the homepage and some blogs. I only know of the two Princess Lovers ero-OVAs and well it wasn't anything too fancy =/.

Similar knight-themed is Koikishi PurelyxKiss. Something like a modern knight-school setting to protect the peace of the town. Of course they still use swords and armors to fight . The main cast is quite likeable - at least for my easy-to-satisfy-taste. The "drama" that leads to the first confession of the route I have been playing seemed a bit too forced, but I can forgive it as they had to build a starting point ... Of course most knight-games needs a queen or princess, so they "serve" you a chibi royal highness And another brother-obsessed Imouto who even was able to skip classes just to attend with her brother at the knight school

I've also completed Lunaris Filia. The main routes of the main girls were quite nice (even though they could have used less "suspense" generally). The poor main lead was left clueless for the vast majority of the VN regarding the supernatural stuff (church, vampire, blood contract and more) which was at times tiresome.
And as with Whirlpool's other title Suzukaze, there was also a secret girl after every other route is completed, but unless Suzukaze said girl did not share as much focus during the normal routes.
I felt they tried to do too much on her path ...
Spoiler for Lunaris Filia - hidden route:

A funny game that doesn't have a deep plot would be Renai 0 km, i am still waiting for my game to arrive in the mail but from the demo that i played i would say that i like the silly story and the likeable characters.

edit: the SD cg's look very cute, as an example look at my avatar

Ah... yeah, this is why it's silly to make blind recommendations (but also why I chose two "neutral" recommendations that I at least thought wouldn't be outright hated). The problem with comedy is that even it is so personal; what one person finds funny, another person may find tedious or lame. But yeah, as hyl mentioned, the trial for Renai 0km was certainly a game that didn't take itself too seriously and definitely had some good comedy to me. I'd also go back and recommend LoverAble for being light and pretty funny. Makura's "Ikinari Anata ni Koishiteiru" features some rather off-the-wall humour that may or may not suit your fancy. And as some more "outlier" ideas (these could be totally hit or miss), you might consider Windmill's Hyper Highspeed Genius, or Hook's SuGirlyWish; both of these companies have a very firm establishment in the "light-hearted eroge" arena. These are all 2011 games of course.

For me personally, the one keyword in the titles I choose is romance. The more romantic the better, and I don't mind if it's over-the-top. That said, I think the most important thing is to know what your own "keyword" or "keywords" are, at least to narrow the field of view... though of course you also need to look outside your niche every once in a while for those works that transcend.

You'll have to check out the game thread; we already have a few spoilers in there, and I think I'll post most soon. The main things that have been added were two new heroines routes, one for Sana (who you'll know), and another for a new original character Yutsuki. I actually have yet to go through Yutsuki's route (I should really get to it), but she definitely fits into the rather eccentric cast. Sana's route was just great, IMO (but then again, the romance was over-the-top, so it hit the right buttons for me).

For the sake of knowing how you "align" with other people, for me personally, I think NobleWorks was my favourite Yuzusoft game so far, but I do agree that Dyamic Days (Lump of Sugar) was a bit of a miss for me (even though I loved PrismRhythm). I do agree that I think Tayutama is probably my favourite Lump of Sugar work (though I know most insist on ItsuSora... which I still need to get through; NVL games are hard...)

Dunno, Midori no Umi is very interesting so far. The slightly unsettling/creepy atmosphere is extremely well done.

I didn't like Eustia (terrible final chapter) and didn't read Rewrite (character design looks too derpy) but 2011 was still pretty good, better than 2010 at least. I guess it all depends on what you are looking for in your eroge. Grisaia was the best thing I read this year by a very very wide margin, fantastic protagonist, great heroines and very nice writing. I also quite liked Artemis Blue, Kamidori, Euphoria and Irotoridori no Sekai (well, the last route was great). Currently reading KKK and it's immensely entertaining and has ridiculous production values. The year is also not over yet, raiL-soft's next VN comes out next month and is pretty much guaranteed to be awesome.

Tits explorer was great. For the tits. I didn't pay much attention to the plot but I never really do with Clochette's VNs, they really should get it over with and make a full-blown nukige.
I also recently finished Walkure Romanze and was just constantly shaking my head at the terrible writing. Yeah I get it, horses are really majestic animals whatever OH GOD WHY ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT HORSES EVEN DURING AN H-SCENE. The art is glorious however, and seeing those delicious character designs ahegaoing all over the place might make this worth it for some people. Just make sure to ctrl through Lisa's route because that is some seriously bad drama. It's kind of irritating to see a terrible c*** get away with everything because everyone in this story is too nice to actually tell her what a terrible c*** she is.

I tend to think this a bit of a cultural artifact, as I've seen this sort of thing in countless anime/games/etc. before. Rather than "direct revenge" or "punching people out", the general view you usually see espoused in these stories, no matter how evil/annoying the person, is "they'll see the error of their ways eventually". And of course we'll see in the end that they're "not really a bad person" and they have "all sorts of reasons" and so on (don't know how Lisa's route ends, but a safe guess...). In Western media, there's a bit more of a "bad guys deserve to die" mentality, so when faced with these sorts of "villains" a bunch of us are looking for the gun. Still, it is frustrating to see a jerk get their way for a long time, even if you know their comeuppance will come eventually (though it probably still doesn't feel like enough to "pay" for what they've done).

(Another particularly egregious 2011 example of this, incidentally, was Moonstone's Princess Evangile -- which I wouldn't recommend to most people anyway, but if you can't stand "tolerated villains" then doubly-avoid. Definitely tried my patience on the "drama" front, which I thought was pretty unneeded in the first place.)

It's funny that I enjoyed (at least) the light-hearted moments of Princess Evangile The drama in its various forms was too much and too frequent à la drama -> solution -> normal - > drama -> rinse & repeat. Still, the "angry" silence with only "Grrr, nghh..."-sounds against the main lead from the four selectable heroines was kinda entertaining. I was disappointed that there was no Ruriko's route, though. But yeah, overall it would maybe have served better as a full light-hearted/comedic VN.

Yeah, I actually did enjoy the light-hearted part of Princess Evangile a fair bit too (most of the characters are really fun and nice, and the comedy was indeed fairly entertaining), which is what made me more annoyed by this particular aspect of the drama. The reason it's frustrating is that when there's so much drama and build-up and it all gets resolved relatively simply in the end with no real lasting consequences, it's sort of like "what was the point of that?" I don't mind drama in stories generally speaking, but there has to be some balance between the problem, the journey to resolve it, and the final outcome/consequences. If they're going to show a villain being reformed, the villain needs a lot of character development too. The problem in Princess Evangile, anyway, is that the villain keeps doing villainous things simply because they're the villain and that's what villains do... until they finally get defeated and then it's like "okay, I lost; I guess I won't be a villain anymore". /facefault

This is more of a "problem" in VNs with a lighter tone, I think. I have no problems with them "seeing the error of their ways" but it's kind of pointless if everyone just stands around like a wet noodle taking the verbal abuse for the whole duration of the game because avoiding conflict is what the good guys are supposed to do. It makes me think less of the cast and story in general. Feels like a saturday morning cartoon with the expected educational message. One of the reasons why Grisaia was so refreshing, Yuuji was a complete no nonsense man.

edit: also concerning that Project Dawn poll. Is the stuff on the project page everything this group has ever done? Because something like Dies Irae seems to be a bit too much to handle for these guys. The Japanese in DI is pretty damn hard and it's ridiculously long. Nothing worse than a TL project that gets stuck in limbo forever.

Damn shame, that is. Sana was a character I could arguably definitely relate to.

For some reason, I could never get past Prism Rhythm, it felt really, shall we say, stifling or tedious to sift through the dialogue for me. I guess other people might be charmed by the characters, graphics, setting, but somehow that particular game of theirs didn't deliver.

Not finishing Itsukasora is understandable; it's quite difficult to read! It's been sitting gathering dust for two-something years now...with the only route I've ever finished was the first girl, the one who always called the protagonist "goshujin-chan".

Shame in which sense? Perhaps I phrased things poorly, but if you liked Sana in the original game, I think you'll definitely like her in the PSP game (this is the biggest response I've seen on sites like egs as well). I thought they made her even more relate-able in her route as some of the reasons behind her character were explained. But if you mean shame as in "shame she didn't have a route in the original game", then yes...

I think the thing I liked most about that game was the mood/feel. It's often called an "iyashikei" game. I also quite liked all the characters. So yeah, it was definitely different in style (it was made by a second team after all), but I still quite liked it in a different way. I can see though how those who liked some of their other games may not have been fond of this one, as it's quite different.
