Nero and Patrash's "going to visit their grandfather" ending scene from World Masterpiece Theater anime, "Dog of Flanders"

It's one of those animes that if you ask Japanese people, the top response will be this.

I would say the death of nina and alexander @ FMA, but i guess thats because i saw that recently ... i think there are sadder deaths, but its been some time since i watched them so they appear less sad than they actually were when i watched the show for the first time

Fair enough....The "Dog of Flanders" here is from the original World Masterpiece Theater TV-series

Nero and Patrash goes through 52 episodes of harsh realities, and never giving up...their "true friend," their grandpa dies during the series.

The last several episodes are the most touching...

Ep. 48: Nero loses his job as a milk carrier due to false rumors that Nero was the arsonist who set the town windmill on fire.

Ep. 49: With his source of income gone, his last chance of survival is to win an art contest and win the prize.

Ep. 50: On Christmas Day, Nero and Patrash are evicted by the landlord as they don't have enough money to pay the rent. Nero uses his last money to go to the museum where he sent in his art. His art was rejected in the screening process.

Ep. 51: Nero has no more money left to buy food. Coset drops 2000 francs that he borrowed from the bank (Coset was especially mean towards Nero in the arson rumor incident). Nero finds 2000 francs, but truthfully returns the found cash to Coset. Coset, thanks Nero dearly and apologizes for everything that had happened. Patrash sees Nero and chases after him

Ep. 52: Coset learns the truth about the windmill fire from Noel...wasn't done by Nero and was done by Hans' mishandling of the equipment. Everyone who has come into contact from the past 50 episodes, whether good or bad, comes to see, take care, and apologize to Nero. An art dealer from Antwerp, Hendrick Lay comes to town to offer Nero a scholarship to a prestigious art school. But...it's all to late. Nero and Patrash died of hypothermia in a church.

Nero and Patrash's "death" -
Nero and Patrash leaves into the darkness of the night from Coset's house after truthfully returning 2000 francs.

Nero and Patrash seeks refuge at an abandoned church. Cold, hungry, and exhausted, Nero whispers into Patrash's ear in front of the stained-glass St. Mary - "Patrash, you must be cold. I'm tired too...I'm sooo sleepy....Patrash...." And seven angels comes to take Nero and Patrash away.

The difference between the original story, the TV anime, and the movie anime is this "death scene." The World Masterpiece Theater producers didn't want to portray "death" as bluntly as the original story was since it was too saddening for such a beloved series. In the original story, Nero whispers to Patrash "I'm so sorry I couldn't feed you...I did everything I could...but I am tired....oh, you too Patrash....well Patrash, it's our turn to go...will you die with me....Patrash..."

So the word "death/die" was never used and was symbolically portrayed by the arrival of seven angels coming to "receive" Nero and Patrash.

The difference between the TV version and the movie version is that Nero and Patrash are received by "Seven Angels" (TV) or "Three Heavenly Bodies - Holy Father, Son, Ghost" (movie).

This is, according to Japanese popular research, the most saddest anime in our minds.

Ahh, I think the saddest deaths were both Wolfwood and Legato from Trigun. Both of their death's were incredibly dramatic, probably the saddest deaths I have seen on any television show, anime or not.

I mean, Wolfwood sitting in a church crying with a huge cross hanging over his shoulder.........im getting a tear just thinking about it

. And Legato just seemed so innocent when he died, even though he was all evil and stuff. Plus the characters were SO COOL! It sucks to see cool characters die..

Anyway...

I dont know about the sad death but most "romantic" (not love love though) was at read or die tv.. when the buildings were going to sink. That man who smoked cigar and said something like ah this tastes good..

and as soon as the cigar didnt burn anymore he was dead... Oh so beautiful!

Tragic, as there's the heart-bearing confession to Shuuji, who only sees her as a friend all this while. Lots of blood and the apocalyptical theme in Saikano makes it even more sad and tragic. Touching exchange between Shuuji and Akemi... the body bearing, hugging etc are heart-wrenching and not ecchi at all. Anyone who thinks its ecchi should be...

Despite the fact that she wasn't given much of a history in the show, I really felt for her, and thought it was terribly tragic when she was killed by the very person she loved (in a manner of speaking). Also agree on the previous Kanon submission.

Fast forward to the duel, and the scene where u see Spike all shot up, u hate to accept the possibility that he is dying... U hear that beautiful song playing in the background, then the star fades away... enough said. Naruto Spoiler: Episode 19, the scene where Haku & Zabuza lies dead together - Haku's past is already tragic enough and he died protecting someone who's precious to him... Naruto started to cry, and he finally got Zabuza to crack emotionally... Fast forward to the scene where the snow is falling and the music (sorrow & sadness) is playing. The two laying there, one is dead and one is dying, then the snowflake fell on Haku, seemingly turning into tears - the tragic, yet beautiful scene. RahXephon Spoiler: Aagain episode 19, the death of Asahina Hiroko - Asahina was hugging Ayato, and just when Ayato was about to kiss her, a Dolem attacks. Ayato told Asahina that he wants to protect her, and Asahina was telling Ayato that she have something important to tell him... But this is no time. Ayato started to fight the Dolem, and the audience sees the Dolem is connected to Asahina. The music started to play and Asahina started dying... just before she dies, she wrote "I love you". Kenshin - Reminiscene I dont think I need to describe this one.

Gundam Seed: Spoiler: Mwu/Muu - what more could be said? Macross: Spoiler: Roy Faulker - Always said to see heros die like that Rahxephon: Spoiler: Asahina - Sad love story here. Cowboy BeBop: Spoiler: Spike & Julia - some Romeo & Juliet stlyes here Kenshin OVA: Spoiler: Kenshin - Reguardless of whether he should or shouldn't die at the end of the OVA, its still sad to see him die. Also I think the animation style had a lot more effect emotionally then the way it was animated in the TV series could have. The character movements, and facial expression was very good IMO. Tomoe - Very tragic and sad death. Espcially for Kenshin, whom carried the guilt of it for the rest of his life. You can really say that she was the person that made Kenshin to be the person his was more so then anything else that happened.

Join Date: Nov 2003 Location: Stuck Between Reality and Fantasy	Saikano: Spoiler: the death of humanity, or more specifically, Chiise. the way Chiise sacrificed herself to save the man she loved more than anything (i woulda let him die...i'd rather be dead than all alone on a barren Earth) and then she either leaves behind "Enough of (her) to still maintain her form" or Shuuji just starts hallucinating plus the final episode finally cleared up the question why Saikano had the tagline "The Last Love Song on this Little Planet" After hearing about how SAD the last episode would be, i put off watching it for a month before i finally sat down and watched it Nadesico Spoiler: Gai's death. The saddest part was only Akito remembered him, or at least acknowledged him as more than a "casualty of war" The Admiral that killed Gai: it was very dramatic, even though he REALLY had it coming (i hoped he'd really die with Aqua on that island...) being aided by the 2 things you hate most (Gekiganger and Gai) to help "vanquish" your foes was kinda touching...or maybe that's just an upset stomach Tsukumo: someone mentioned him earlier. He truly met a tragic death, what was sad was it was used towards the complete OPPOSITE purpose than what he was trying to accomplish

He was a pretty important character, i liked him alot. But... the "ending" isnt really good either... Kanon Spoiler: When Yuichi takes Makoto to the hill and then she "dies"...
