I have to add Iron Maiden to my list, they are so epic awesome and I'm sad that I didn't discover them earlier. Currently I'm obsessed with their songs Hallowed Be Thy Name and When the Wild Wind Blows.
Definately. Iron Maiden is right up there. Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son is pretty much a perfect album. What I like abound the band is that they are quite melodic, although not to the point where you can call them power metal. At their core, they are just as heavy as say Metallica, which is another incredible band, purely objectively speaking. However, the melodic elements of Iron Maiden make their songs so much more enjoyable than anything Metallica has to offer, in my opinion. The only reason I didn't mention them earlier is because I haven't been listening to Maiden for too long, so they still need to grow on me a little.

Man, Dream Theater's Images and Words is an amazing album. I have it on my shelf and am looking at it right now. Unfortunately, the band got a little too poppy for me over time. Or at least that's what it feels like. Images and Words is awesome, but the rest of Dream Theater's records, I just can't get into.

I disagree to an extent. I think their most recent work has become more accessible, but certainly not "poppy." They're not as progressive as they were many years ago, which I'm not too thrilled with, but they're still one of my all time favorite bands. I'm really stoked for their new album, I'm especially looking forward to seeing what Mike Mangini brings to the table.

I'm much more into soloists than groups, but there are a few bands that I consider pretty great.

The Beatles had such charm, and I'd describe their music as quite handsome. True genre benders. "Strawberry Field Forever" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9s1I1TZqJg

Muse have definitely delved more into generic alt.rock the past few years, but in their earlier career they had a sombre air about their music that was so effortless and unique. "Unintended" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9LOFXwPwC4

No Doubt are possibly one of the most understated bands around, at least here in the U.K I feel, no one sounds like them. "New" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vw_rjoQ7s6c

Shakespears Sister - their name is actually spelled like that :P Took the glam style of Bolan, threw in some mock opera, british humour and american funk. "I Don't Care" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-odnJZIyc2g

Opeth is one band that made me appreciate death metal which I used to not like. They make very atmospheric and sophisticated music and the lyrics from their early to mid-era were brutal and beautiful at the same time.

Tool is a band that makes the music captivating without the flashy riffs and solos. While I like the most stuff from them, MJK's voice was what got me into this band.

Cynic makes the most unpredictable music. I like their debut album the best but it's hard to find. It's peaceful and aggressive at the same time. Every musicians in the band are virtuosos.

Joy Division is another band whose music's quite addictive mainly because of the basslines. Their lyrics are down to earth and very relevant, hardly exploring conceptual topics or fantasy but they remain very interesting and timeless for me.

For anyone reading this topic, I seriously need to recommend Machinae Supremacy (MaSu). They're a band out of Lulea, Sweden that is still rather local (only in Sweden, sparsely outside), but they are extremely talented. Devoted to video games, and bringing 'gamer music', they love to toy around with the SiD chip out the Commodore 64 and use it to add video game effects and sounds to their music. Hence why they dub their genre 'SiD Metal'.

Probably one of my favorite bands to date, and a good chunk of their stuff is free-released by them. (They even used to have a 'support P2P' thing on their old site, lol)

not that into them anymore, but they were the band that made me like music on another level, search for more music and actually spend money on CDs (whoops)
first single I bought in mid 2007, gravity. <3

^ Props for JINN, very expressive band.

Not my favorite band, but I recently found these guys:

They're a Japanese Melodic Metal band. I didn't quite like their previous albums, but this one, Epsilon, released last month has a new vocalist and its a female ^^; Her voice meshes well with the song. See for yourself

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4nuVqAg8-Y

Very catchy tune and guitar riffs with a really soothing voice!

EDIT: Haha, didn't put band name : Blood Stain Child

Kvelertak is fast becoming my new favourite band. Hard to generalize them as their influences include a variety of genres. I'll just say that it's brutally catchy.

Spoiler for Kvelertak - Sjohyenar:
