Sorry Gainax, but this is just too weird.
Well a TTGL fan doesn't mean you're a Gainax fan.

A Gainax fan always expects weirder and crazier stuff.

"Childish style" is definitely a matter of perspective. Don't forget that to a lot of people, ALL anime, from Heroman to Bible Black, is "childish" simply due to it being animated. And that the originators of this particular style, the brains behind PPG, had little to no aversion to slipping things under the radar when it suited them.

Granted, never near this level... ^_^

This "Too Weird" argument just kills me. You mean the same Gainax that made Magical Shopping District Abenobashi? Did people just forget all about that stuff?

I don't want to complain here but TTGL design way different than other Gainax works, remind me western mix japanese character design stereotype.

Of course, P&SWG might weird to you (Including me and other user here) but how the earth someone say P&SWG is childish show anyway? Have anyone blind or what, let see here, what i see some very disturbing:

Spoiler for Disturbing:

So, how the hell someone say this is childish show

I think someone mentioned it earlier in the thread, but The Powerpuff Girls was first created as "The Whoopass Girls;" Craig McCracken imagined it being aired late at night and college students watching it.

As for this... well I'll definitely check it out because what the hell, it's Gainax and it's unique. Worth a shot in any case.

There's a difference between childish design and childish content. I never meant the content but rather the design of the series.

@KOapps

That's okay, I know how you feel when you think this is not very animeish . Even i was "WTH? what just happened" after watched the trailer.

Based what i see from this show, i will say something odd but actually it's Japan copying America copying Japan copying America. The modern manga(as in the last few decades) were inspired by Disney. Regardless, think about it, Japanese anime started pre-WW2 and influenced Disney in his works. It's not really fair to say which copied which...however, anime and American cartoons have distinctive styles. that's the thing, this kind of style might be anywhere in the west, but it has been a LONG time since something like this was made in japan.just the fact that the japanese copied us for once made it original and of course, the fact that the story and characters is so not what the normal otaku in japan wants make it even more interresting. Take a example like Astroboy, Doraemon, The Big-O, Giant Robo, they might like anime-ish but it remind them as western-ish.

I don't think people should be so quick to criticize it as a "rip off." Actually I feel it's a parody of the American trend of cartoons--taking what's popular these days and putting a Gainax spin on it--Invader Zim, Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack, Dexter's Lab, Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi, and [insert random Cartoon Network toon here]. Of course, Gainax designs the characters with slightly better form and artistic foundation (their own taste) and throws in the blatant sex references for extra laughs.

So it seems funny that Gainax is parodying the American attempt to emulate their own Japanese style. In a way, it's not parodying necessarily to make fun of us, but I think Gainax shows a sort of appreciation for what the Western/Anime hybrid style has become by creating this show. They are just trying something different. But I don't doubt there is a marketing side (catering to the US), too.

In other word, THIS IS GAINAX afterall.

I've never seen it stated anywhere that anime influenced Disney. Western animation as a whole was already big business back when he started doing it (some of his own work drew inspiration from Fritz the Cat), and the timing alone suggests that the origins of animation in Japan were influenced by that same animation boom in the West. "Anime" as we see it now was unquestionably influenced by Disney, since it starts with the works of Osamu Tezuka.

Yeah, Osamu Tezuka's character design are pretty obscure than western does, the White Lion was homage to lion king from Disney company, Astroboy was given influenced to Megaman since Inafune got that idea. While Gainax have crazy-motivated-westernish in front of them, why they pick this show? Because they are a lot of sexual reference or maybe they really boredom with their own artistic japanese animation like Evangelion movie & TTGL? Who knows? Maybe Gainax will give explain why.

Don't forget to add that the audio for the trailer is a female having sex.

The PV is good, altough a bit too fast paced to grasp how the show will really look like. It's very stylish but I want to see how an entire episode will turn out to be..

Colors design is excellent, though. One of the best I've ever seen in an anime. Also, I have my fingers crossed in the hope the Yoshinari will animate as many sequences as I can. Probably he's overloaded with work, since the series seems to be very close to his visual style, hence he's likely looking after the visuals of the entire project, but still I want him to be in the animation credits!

Just stepped through the PV a frame at a time, and was very impressed by the level of detail. It's not Paprika or Disappearance, but this will be deceptively beautiful in HD. Don't know how well the constant, manga-like use of spelled-out sound effects (in Engrish!) will go over with the Western audiences, though... They are particularly fond of "BLAM"... ^_^
