hmm I'm happy about UC getting an extra episode but spring 2013 for episode 6. I guess they have to space out the episodes even further apart to make people wait longer.

It's probably money. Better for them to spread it out.

In regards to why the change in armament for animated Banshee :-

アームド・アーマーですね。ビーム・マグナムだと威力が大きすぎて取り回しが悪いというのが一番で、ちょっ としたところで撃つというのができなかったからです。実は小説のときからエネルギーの発射量を調節できるよ うにしたらどうだろうという案もあったんだけど、俺はそれは嫌だった。良くも悪くも撃ったら取り返しがつか ない取り回しの悪さがビーム・マグナムの魅力であるから、便利な武器にはしたくなかったんです。だけど今回 のような形になるとそれが仇になって……。小説ではトリントン基地を襲ってきたジオン残党軍を相手にしてい るから容赦なく撃てて、バンシィの強さと怖さを印象づけられたんだけど、アニメでは戦う相手がユニコーン1 機になってしまったから、すさまじい力で相手を葬るって見せ方ができない。その条件下でバンシィの怖さをど う表現したらいいのか、というところで、いっそ見た目もまったく違う新武器に変えようかということになった んです。演出面も考えた取り回しのよさから右腕と一体型のライフルを設定して、左腕のほうはいつの間にかで きてたね。

超振動で触れた相手をバラバラにしてしまう左腕の能力は、メカ作監の玄馬さんのアイデアです。「こうしたい んだけど」って言われて、「いいんじゃない」って古橋さんとカトキさんが答えたのを横で聞いていながら、俺 は実はよくわかっていなくて。コンテになって「なるほど、こりゃカッコいいや」と。

In summary, Fukui hated the idea of a beam magnum. Sure it packs a punch, but it's fault lies in limited ammunition. So you actually have to conserve enery when using it, an impratical choice during a conflict. So in order to create an air of malice and vengence aganist the Unicorn by the Banshee so much that it could overpowered and bury the Unicorn in a fight, Fukui came up with the idea of an intergrated rifle for the Banshee's right arm and left the other arm free.

The idea of the meelee weapon for the left arm came from the Mecha Supervisor Genma who said he will like to try some idea out and got permission from Furuhashi and Katoki to, though Fukui had no idea Genma was doing. Nevetheless, he was impressed later on.

In regards to extenting Unicorn by 1 more episode :-

13日のライブで発表したが「UC」は次回では終わりません。
EP7を作らせていただいて、以って完結。
7話目は、従来の1時間枠を超える代物になる予定。
EP5が従来よりほんの少し尺が短いのは、 その準備のためとお考えください。

Fukui is allowed one more episode for completion sake with a longer-than-usual length. So just think of Episode 5's slower pacing as a prologue.

When asked about how the script for Ep 7 is going :-

脚本は上がっています。コンテ作業はこれからなので、1時間をどれくらい超えるのかはまだ誰にもわからない 。ただ、超えてもいいという覚悟だけは確かです。最終話はそれくらいすべてを注ぎ込んだ内容になると思いま す。もともと「UC」は最初は4本完結と言われていた企画で、それを交渉で6本にしてもらって。で、これ以 上増えたら困るよと睨まれつつも、俺は密かに「まだ足らねぇな」と。

He says work is still ongoing. He does not know if it will go beyond an hour, but say it's most likely will as he will put a lot of things into it. UC was planned to end in 4 episodes, but negotiating brings the count to 6 and he commented that it's still not enough.

Will see about interpreting more interesting things later. Namely the part about paying homage to Miyazaki's work in the OVA but retaining Tomino's elements.

Bandai executives fucked this one big time. It should have been at least a 8 60 OVAs to do the novel justice. Because of this the best part of the novel, Dakar, got cut a 4 minute battle and they completely modified the Torrington battle. The Garuda wasn't even destroyed by the Psyco Field resonance in the OVA, while the atmospheric battle was way more epic with someone's sacrifice and the Ankushas were useful.

Now they have 2 hours and some minutes to do the whole book 9 and 10 plot, since they are skipping book 8 completely. Isn't it sad?

That's not what he said - he said that the main selling point of the beam magnum is that it is an overtly powerful weapon, and with that comes with the awkwardness of wielding it which makes every shot count (probably referring to how easily it kills so there's a lot of weight and responsibility in using it especially in relation to how Banajher is using it in conflict to his pacifist ideals), however in keeping with this whole "overtly powerful weapon" motif it became a burden as it is not suited to show a brutal one-on-one fight between the Banshee and Unicorn due to its one-shot kill power. There's a choice to follow the novel where the beam magnum can be adjusted in power level but he feels that would make the weapon too convenient and that it also ruins the main point of the "overtly powerful weapon" motif of the beam magnum so he was against that path, so they came up with another weapon for the Banshee.

If they just want the Banshee to beam-spamming its enemies in the first place, just say so .

Umm, no. They just want the Unicorn-Banshee fight to look good in animation without changing the properties of the beam magnum.

Precisely what I was thinking - if they were willing to extend the OVA not once, but twice - in the first place, they should have made it 8 episodes, with the whole Dakar/Torrington arc split into 2 episodes. Not too sure about the plot details since I haven't read the novels, but episode 4 definitely felt rushed, with too little time to develop Loni's character for her death to have a significant impact on me.
