The August, 2007 issue of Newtype USA features (I think) a translation of this article from the Japanese Newtype magazine:



Plus the Newtype Japan reader's poll of popular Anime, male & female characters (at least a month or two old) features TMoHS as #2 anime (Code Geass #1); Kyon #3 male character (Kira Yamato #2, LeLouch #1); and Haruhi #2 female character (CC #1)



Plus the DVD has the first episode of AIR TV on it!

Considering that the most recent Suzumiya Haruhi novel's release *was* delayed from April to June, I think that was pretty reasonable speculation. And, as it turns out, the headline on the right DOES, in fact, say that "Suzumiya Haruhi no Kyougaku Release Postponement Announcement." (Suzumiya Haruhi no Kyougaku, or "The Fright of Haruhi Suzumiya," is the title of the 10th Haruhi novel.)

Otagei is a series of synchronized movements and gestures performed by the Wotas (otaku fanboys of idol groups like Morning Musume) while their idol perform on stage. You can read this blog post for more detailed info on Otagei.

Here's some youtube videos which offered some funny take at this phenomenom. You'll get to learn about exciting moves like OAD (Over-Action Dolphin), PPPH, and ROMANCE. So after reading about it and watching the video demo of Otagei, you might some some of the moves familiar; there's a reason for it.

Based on this blog post comment discussion I've had with a very knowledgeable J-ota, we've discovered that some part of the Hare Hare Yukai Dance full version is based on ota-gei. I'm going to list the ones we've found, and see if you can help discover more. I think everyone should know about the Dance's great Ota-gei heritage.

The ota-gei found in the Hare Hare Yukai Full version dance are listed below:

0:13 - Yuki and Mikuru started to perform the otagei "８の字" (Hachi no Ji, figure 8) in the back

0:53 - Haruhi, Yuki, and Mikuru started to perform the otagei "クロール" (crawl).

Ending - Yuki, Mikuru, Kyon, and Itsuki all performed otagei "ケチャ" (Kecha) toward Haruhi; in the original Kecha the hand is extended toward the singer, so it works that they would do it toward Haruhi, the ruler and lord.

So this goes to show that KyoAni is very knowledgeable in all parts of otaku-dom, and I guess that's one of the reason for it's incredible popularity among otakus. The "otageishi" (otagei performers) would automatically adopt it as their own, for it's the first time a dance featured their fanboy moves.
