Wow this show wasted no time in showing us the duality of the city, but even then I wouldn't say it felt rushed.

First the city takes away Shion's right to qualify for his high-end job for merely being in the wrong place (his own home no less) at the wrong time, which seems pretty counter productive to me. If I was whoever was in charge of that sort of thing I would have let him keep his position that he's obviously highly qualified for and make use of his talents while keeping an eye on him instead of bumping him down and then keeping an eye on him. Seems like the powers that be have a bit of a self-destructive streak going for them, but then again they seem hell-bent on staving off any sort of progress so maybe they are afraid of Shion's abilities and that's why they bumped him down.

To add insult to injury they then revoke his citizenship and are about to cart him off for prison again merely for being in the wrong place at the wrong time and witnessing and saying some he shouldn't. However luckily our thought police are no match for Nezumi and he takes him to a place outside the city that looks a lot like what your average slum looks like today. I'm really hoping Nezumi doesn't turn out to be an O'Brien type character, because there are a couple signs pointing that could be pointing that way or could not such as how he always seems to be in the perfect place at the perfect time to have the maximum possible impact on Shion's life and how he just seems to know so damn much while apparently living the life of a street rat. He could just as easily be exactly what he appears to be though.

Anyway looks like Shion is infected with whatever killed the man in the park and now his co-worker and he's basically an enemy of the state who may never see his loved ones and friends again. Can't see him smiling for too much longer as he's about to find out the truth about the world he lives in.

Yeah ... I was thinking that the brief shot of the strange marks on the back of his neck meant the same thing.

Nasty beasts those little bee/wasp thingees are though!

I'm curious as to what you mean by "an O'Brien type character" (if it's a TV Tropes reference, I'm not familiar with it).

Do you mean a character like Chief O'Brien, from Stark Trek: TNG and DS9?

Just curious.

O'Brien was a character in 1984 who at first appeared to be a member of Goldsteins resistance against Ingsoc but eventually is revealed to be a,high ranking member of the though police who's job is to entrap potential rebels whose thought crime is not immediately obvious and resocialize them to support the party, which he does to the hero Winston Smith.

It also turns out that O'Brien completely fabricated the idea of a resistance and invented Goldstein for the purpose of giving thought criminals false hope and luring them out leading to one of if not the darkest and most hopeless endings I've ever read in a book.

Don't worry, there's absolutely no chance that he'll turn out like O'Brien. They wouldn't have shown him being shot and running away from the authorities otherwise. Nezumi is just really thankful for Shion treating his wound and feeding him back then. He would have died if he had never met Shion, so he's paying back his debt by keeping Shion alive and safe by any means necessary.

Am I the only one who always gets goosebumps watching the ED? Especially the part when Nezumi throws the snowball. It's just seems so melancholic somehow...

Well, I think the song is beautiful, and I get goosebumps just after Nezumi throws the snowball, I can hear that part again and agian and again...<3

Does anyone know when the full version comes out?

But the visuals i find really funny and cute, since Nezumi is totally different from what we're seeing right now (plus I can't help but laugh every time Sion runs away from the snowball, it's just such a shoujo scene XD)

When they know he's a rebel, he's defective material. Aiding a criminal means just that. I would say the punishment for his first offense is pretty light but he did not repent and made the 2nd offense so they have to lock him up.

The wasp thing... Ewww. Eeeewwww... EEEWWWW!!!
I must remember never to show this episode when I have friends round for regular anime nights.
There would be vomit to clean up.

Still, least we know why Shion has white hair in the OP and ED.

I do wonder if Safu's going to be involved in the hunt later.

I thought episode 1 was okayish but episode 2 was definitely amazing. The way they just completely destroyed Shion's life like that was just brutal. And the fact that that bee might be inside Shion now just adds to the insult. Gotta feel for the poor guy. The "i want your sperm" caught me off guard though...

Well it may just be me seeing things, but Shion does seem to have signs of it starting after he came out of the water and something was on the back of his neck. Also the "I want your sperm" thing was definitely unexpected But hey, with clueless male leads that never get the point of things unless you ask them directly. You just gotta try a different method to get the fact to them. Too bad it was deployed on someone that got struck on first sight on another person.

Spoiler for Picture:

Thanks for the answer. I see what you mean now.

I doubt that Nezumi is an O'Brien character since Nezumi was shown on the run from the authorities back in Episode 1 (before Sion is even seen on-screen).

Prior to Nezumi meeting Sion, there wasn't really much reason for the government to suspect that Sion was going to become a "subversive element", or anything like that.

I was just wondering: was Safu really going to No. 5? I mean, wouldn't there be a risk that Safu find out the truth about No. 6 in No. 5, or decide the govermment there was better?

So either No. 5 is another dystopia or Safu isn't going there...any thoughts?

My guess (and that's all it is, a guess, I haven't read the source material) is that there's a large centralized government that oversees all of the numbered cities/countries.

There may be slight variations between them, but nothing major.

Again, just a guess.

And a very good one, too, I think. I think all the "Number" cities probably operate under one Orwellian umbrella.

No. 5 is probably the same as No. 6 but if she is to show that she doesn't like No. 6 for whatever reason, they'll lock her up. If she keeps quiet, she'll live a happy elite life.

No. 5 is another dystopia and Safu isn't going there. She won't be going to No. 5 because she's one of the main characters and she most likely will have more screen time in No. 6, the location in question in this story. She probably will get in trouble with the government one way or the other (which is part of how she gets more screen time.) That's my guess.

It's a good guess. Sadly the little I know of the source material doesn't cover this -_- I think it's either:

A- What you said
B- Safu isn't really going to leave, but just go to another section and they'll pretend it's No. 5.
C- the author didn't think it through...

I wouldn't be so sure about that. My own take is that Safu is going to appear again around the end of the series, probably as damsel in distress. But for the meantime, it's all about Shion and Nezumi, I think.
