Shin Sekai Yori - Spoilers & Speculation (for experienced viewers only)

This thread is for the experienced Shin Sekai Yori viewer (i.e. those of you who are familiar with potentially all the novels / manga), its purpose is to allow free discussion of theories and speculation over the Shin Sekai Yori anime series, it therefore will contain unmarked spoilers. If you are a novel / manga virgin of Shin Sekai Yori, then do not read this thread unless you want to be spoiled (use the Shin Sekai Yori - Speculation & Theories (for first time anime viewers)).

Since posters are expected to be familiar with the novel / manga, there is no real need for spoiler tags, but feel free to include them if you so wish.

Haven't read the novels but here's what I've gathered so far about future content (may not be 100% accurate since it's based on secondary sources). Unfortunately, most spoilers out there revolve around the relationships rather than the story. Added spoiler tags just in case since it does contain very heavy spoilers. But I wanted to know some of these things and I am sure some others here want to know also. And it should get the discussion going since this thread's been quite dead, sadly.

Looks like there are two time skips. One is coming up soon (2 years) after Saki and Satoru return to the village. Another 12-year time skip is also going to happen later on.

There is some homosexual content coming up (may be toned down in the anime), including a sex scene between Shun and Satoru, and maybe a sex scene between Maria and Saki. Doesn't really bother me but there it is, any homophobic folks might as well drop this show now even though I doubt they'll be very explicit about it in the adaptation.

And, as was hinted at in the anime already, it seems that Saki had sex with her mom (whatever that means, I don't really wanna go there). It's some kind of teaching thing but technically it's incest.

The kids are going to recover their Cantus abilities "very soon", apparently. I hope they do that in time to kick some bakenezumi ass They also get to keep the information they learned from the librarian and it'll play a pivotal role in the story, or so people say.

Shun is eventually slated to die after confessing his feelings to Saki. Can't really say I'll miss him though, tough break.

Maria and Mamoru also have sex, and they are also going to die. There are some spoilers about them escaping after being condemned to death and then dying anyway but I am not clear on the specifics.

Saki and Satoru are the end couple, they eventually get married. Satoru makes the first move and they end up having sex at some point (not the tame stuff of episode 5, but then right now they are not really at an appropriate age for a sex scene from our point of view). And yes, that makes them the only survivors from the main cast. After their interactions in episode 5 I am somehow comfortable with that notion though.

Story wise, the material will progressively become darker and more complicated. From what I understand, the conflicts with/around the bakenezumi will continue to play a central role in the future arcs as well.

2) Saturo and Shun will have more than just sex. An actual relationship.
So I don't see them cutting that part completely, since it's important.
It's funny that while Shun definitely likes Saki, it seems he's more attracted physically to Satoru, or else I couldn't explain why he kept banging Satoru instead of Saki.

i certainly dont like shonen-ai but i dont mind it given the nature of the series, but if i need to swallow those scenes i really want to know how will be the relationship between maria and saki

Mamoru gets away from the village as he thinks his life is threatened, and it's not unfounded. The rest of the gang search for Mamoru and find him. Maria decides to run away with Mamoru, saying to Saki that Mamoru is not as strong as Saki and needs someone to be with. Their remains are found a few years later but Saki is not informed on it at the time. How they died is not told in the novel but most likely they were killed by Squealer after Maria gave a birth to Mamoru's child.

Out of curiosity, why is it likely that Squealer killed them? Is this in relation to why the adults forbid the rats from coming near children?

Considering Saki's narration about Maria in one of the earlier episodes would it be correct to assume that Maria herself isn't the cause of the massive number of deaths but rather the deaths are caused by a mass bakenezumi rebellion with her and Mamoru's child as it's leader/figurehead?

I have so to say after seeing what a 12-year old's Cantus is capable of, a child raised without the strict limitations of the village is a very frightening prospect. I still have to give those rats credit, they're a lot smarter than anyone gives them credit for.

Your speculation is almost spot-on, except that the child is not just a figurehead but he can actually kill the villagers lopsidedly without receiving any effective counterattack.

Man, Mamoru just can't catch a break, he finally gets Maria only to be offed by a humanoid naked mole rat just after their baby is born. To make things worse the aforementioned child becomes something like the anti-christ for their world/a fiend

I think we can logically conclude that being Mamoru is suffering in their world

I don't think she supposed to be blaming her... Then again, the village isn't really at fault either. They're doing it to keep the people safe, after all. And Tomiko was doing what she felt she needed to do for the future of the village. It was just a long chain of bad luck, with tragic results.
