If that's the case I suggest you try the pen tool instead.

I am never too sure about how to duplicate the line thickness when I do a trace. I normally mimic this by filling in the line as if they are narrow strips of an area. I wonder if there's a better approach.

If you are using the paths method, then all you need to do is switch to the shape layers one.
