A nice collection of twists and turns in episode 34... Nana is seriously pissed off at Takumi, but also extremely frustrated by Hachi's silence especially after Takumi drops the bomb on her. Then Takumi is a total bastard again by having sex with Hachi more or less against her will, and seemingly rubbing it in with Nana. It drives Nana nuts, and she breaks a strawberry glass by accident, and after that she loses it and just breaks the matching one that made the pair. Yet later on she doesn't remember what happened at all since that. I didn't like how Hachi was portrayed as a golddigger by whatshisname, although I suppose it could seem that way. During that conversation at the recording studio, Reira makes herself scarce, for some reason she got really depressed. Because of the comments about her song? And/or the conversation about Takumi's marriage? Anyway, it looks like she's still not over Yasu and asks his number from Shin and goes over to Yasu's place. A shame for Shin, who was on the verge of getting serious with her, going by his actions and words over the phone. Then the episode ends with Hachi crying over the broken glass and the broken relation with Nana.

If you can do it, more power to you! I really do think it's so much more enjoyable to understand it the first time watching it, than to watch each episode twice. For me, it just loses its initial impact, but I have terrible willpower

34 doesn't seem as cliff-hanger-y as the previous episodes, though it is sad at the end. I think you can watch it and not feel as compelled to immediately seek out the next episode

Here here, I'm doing the same thing. I'm tired of those cliffhanger handings and waiting for new episodes to be released. I'm just gonna wait for atleast 10 more episodes to start watching again.

Hmm, I juz watched episode 39. Seems like they r not going to extend NANA anime as the NANA host says that NANA will only have 2 more mths to go. =( I wonder where they will stop at since the manga is still ongoing.

Hopefully, there is Season 2 or sth for NANA cos' the manga now is getting quite interesting (as in approaching to the answer for everything) ;P

oh yea~ i always dislike too much anime-originals and changes to the original plot.. and i cried when..

in chapter 50+ to 60+ where there were hints that nana..is gone... i thought she had died! but chpt 63 relieved me of my worries.. still, i gotta get to know what made her leave etc. does she seem to have forgotten her memories or just trying to live a life of her own with her favourite music??

Well I was prepared for this episode having gone back and read the manga from beginning to the current chapters. As much as i was prepared for it I was still pissed and upset. I think the only person i couldnt yell at is Yasu. Takumi yes i still hate you no one can tell me the scene with him and Hachi in the bedroom was not F&@ked up, not to mention with Nana right outside the door. To me how Takumi acted in that scene is his true self not the sly double talking pretty boy. But he thinks of everything as possession including Hachi, its all about it his happiness no one elses

Hachi's silence was painful to watch and then the tagging along after Takumi to the bedroom without saying a word to Nana. I count this episode as basically the beginning of the end for Hachi and Nana, as the breaking of strawberry glasses symbolized. The hurt and confusion Nana O must be feeling right now is unbearable unfortunately her mental state only gets worse. Reira really disappointed me but it obvious why she went to Yasu but Shin for once realized he truly cares for Reira and says he doesnt need money, to have it turn out like that.

Over all the hatefest is only going to get worse and my Takumi bashing will surly continue if not worsen as he shows he true colors. I honestly dont think their is a single person in Nana right now that is truly happy but who is happy all the time anyway.

Does anyone else think that if Yasu were to open up his own Psychology clinc hed be a millionaire, hell hes already got the clients.

Kriez your guess is as good as anyone the current chapter you just read is where pretty much everyone is at. The translated manga comes out pretty slow everywhere. Also, since Ai has not announced when the manga will be ending all we can pretty much do is sit and wait, as for your spoiler question.....

IMO Nana O faked her own death. The question is why it was some traumatic we know that, my guess is it had something to do with her mother or maybe Ren. Singing is what she wants to do but i think she wants it on her own terms no matter where she goes she will always sing. In the next couple of chapters of the manga we will most likely get more insight into what exactly happen.

couldn't agree with you more..~ takumi can kiss my arse! except for the friendship and silent comfort hachi can provide for nana, (i'm sorry that i'm not sincere in being sorry,) i think hachi is the typical simple-minded bimbotic girly naive girls that i detest. she can't seem to grow up and mature! a child living an adult's life.. nana is about the main reason i keep reading on.. and yasu is so quiet and reserved in his understanding...

I guess I am one of the few that doesn't blame everything on Takumi for what transpired.

While Takumi's heavyhandedness didn't ease matters, it didn't necessarily make it exponentially worse, nor did Hachi's shamed silence. Nana and Nobu chose the way they reacted to the situation so Nana and Nobu aren't blameless in this debacle.

Takumi didn't tell Nobu to buzz off. Nobu did that by himself. And while Nana wasn't wrong to see Yasu before going home, she was wrong for the bitchy attitude she threw at Takumi once she saw him there. At this point, the only thing Takumi is really guilty of is not using protection when he and Hachi were together so her attitude was uncalled for and made the situation more contentious than it needed to be. And before we accuse Takumi of being a selfish smoothtalker and how it was awful that Hachi didn't say anything at the table, it should be noted that once Takumi starts talking about hers and Ren's relationship, Nana starts to listen. Why was okay to listen in a reasonable manner to Takumi when it was about her and Ren but not when it came to Hachi? As much as Hachi is accused of being immature and selfish, Nana too has a long way to go in becoming more mature and thoughtful of others.

As for the bedroom scene, it isn't excusable for what Takumi did. However, looking at it from Takumi's PoV and it is hard for me to be pissed off at him because sooner or later, the guy was going to snap. There is a clear indication that Takumi was at least beginning to fall in love with Hachi (Ren's brings it up when Takumi says he misses her and Takumi grumpily does not deny it) and he had no idea that they had broken up. He comes back to see her and finds out she's pregnant and possibly by some other guy. The fact that he holds it together as long as he did says something positive about him. So while I don't excuse his action or his words in his moment of stress, I won't count him out either. Everyone (save Naoki, Junko and Kyousuke) in NANA has some kind of issue. Hachi has a communication issue. Nana has control issue. Ren and Nobu are weak. Reira is messing with a minor. Shin has an oedipal complex just for starters.

And Takumi has an anger problem. That's his issue.

If the rest of them can be messed up and they get a pass, then I'll be patient with Takumi to see what the deal with him is.

And yes, I do read the manga too and all I can say is that episode 34 is just the beginning of Takumi's contradictory behavior. On the one hand, he can be incredibly tender and thoughtful and the next, he can be a cold blooded jerk. But that's what makes him a great character. Love him or hate him, he has an effect on the storyline.

I understand perhaps why takumi wanted to and did forse himself unto hachi, but shiesh, how is she ever going to connect to him other than "the lust side" is this is his way. Yup, he's pissed, but if he cared anything for her, he'd of given her at least SOME time to adjust to loosing the love of her life. I just didn't think it was necessary at this point.

Regardless if Hachi chose Takumi because she didn't want her true love's life messed up at such a young life, I don't believe she had that right to make that decision.

Fact being, she should of just told him she loved him, and let HIM make the decision. Protecting someone without giving them the choise isn't fair to all. IMO

i certainly do understand takumi's role in Nana but i don't believe he's falling for hachi.

he may have 'proposed' to hachi but we all know about his hidden agenda. despite his changing attitude and occasional care, it is the fruit of his playboy acts and his experience with women and we do still see him cheating on hachi even after marriage. even hachi herself knows that. she understand that she and takumi are similiar for they are both unable to fall into a real and stable relationship (though in vastly different manners, takumi to have true love, and hachi to stay true in love), hence paradoxically being the one for one another. hachi lives her taitai life and focused on her baby, living the delusional blissful life of the wife of a star only because by living in her fantasy can she have the strength to continue living, now that nana is not within easily reachable distance.

no other solution, at least no other solution that benefits him in a way
he likes.

He's shrewd and calculating - all of this is not so much him staking a
claim on his "love" but rather "winning" - he doesn't want to lose to
Nobu or to anyone so he's not asking but just taking. And Nobu is
too young and immature to understand what's happening here.

Notice Takumi's careful concern for the press reaction of any particular
event, notice also his angry reaction when Hachi didn't want to have
sex with Nana outside the door and he stormily thunders "you'd better
be more concerned with making me happy." I fear for her future
with that kind of person, not only that she will eventually realize she is
trapped in a situation she might not like down the road.

She's jumping from one frying pan to another.

Ultimately - with Takumi recording or on tour most of the time she
will have lots of time to her self. I foresee her taking a lover eventually.

Kind of a grim situation - the facade of a happy marriage but maybe
this is what they need to do to progress. Takumi won't be young and
beautiful forever. By then Hachi may have left him. Who knows what
he's really like behind that facade? Is it love? I think it's possession
in a lot of cases.

Okay, now - Reira - at the news of Takumi's impending marriage she
bolts.

She was obviously in love with Takumi forever and wanting his approval
in her songs as well as everything else.

She immediately seeks out Yasu.

When Yasu finds out WHO Takumi will be marrying the reaction should
be very interesting.

I feel bad for Shin but this whole story is filled with situations like this.

Shin has been paying Reira (financing his lavish lifestyle) but he tells
her he doesn't need her $ anymore - he is obviously falling for her.

Amazing how Yasu came racing in only to stop and cool down before
taking Reira inside.

And Nana gets some kind of short term memory loss - Nobu appeared
to be adjusting beautifully going so far as covering for Nana at her job -
I suspect Nobu will eventually be portrayed as having his own damage
but we'll see that soon enough I suspect.

I can't wait to see the next episode!

Seriously, I am so pleased with both episode 40 and the recent batch of angstless episodes. Just 10 more remaining till conclusion and I still can't believe it's going to end. All I hope for is that the remaining episodes bear semblance to #40, which was funny and inspiring and uplifting and everything a good episode of NANA should.

Less angst! More hilarity! Or else Hachi will give you a glare! 8)

The thing about the sushi was hilarious. And, honestly, that was some beautiful sushi. The reaction was all the more golden because this scene wasn't in the manga, so I had a surprise laugh.

And yes, that's Junko drawing a portrait of Hachi as a dog. 8)



Reira teasing Takumi with the name Stella (his London mistress) while he was on the phone with Hachi was also funny. Reira didn't say many words, but she was geat at facial expression. 8)

BTW, I was extremely surprised at the scene between Nobu and Nana. I don't know if that's some "Japanese mentality" thing, but I can personally say that I'd never find myself in this kind of situation with one of my female just-friends, especially if she is involved with someone else. Nana coming over for beers is alright, but this kind of action is awkward and I am surprised that neither Nobu, nor Nana felt that way.

For one thing, it would feel rather weird. Either Nana and Nobu are that close (which they aren't, not even in the manga), or this is something that a European (with our constricted morals and everything) cannot understand.

BTW, recently, the studio has been animating exactly 1 chapter of NANA per episode. The most recently animated episode (#40) corresponds to chapter 35. Thus, if they keep this exact pace for the rest of the series and not invent some crazy-ass made-up finale, the end should approximately correspond to

the end of Volume 12 and Nana's and Ren's declaration of their marriage.

That would be a killer way to end it all, won't it? Berserk's ending will pale in comparison in terms of "cliffhangery-ness". 8)
