Yes, this is a side story. Volume 6, if i remember correctly.
And this is future.
And some people guess, that it's a happy end... But nobody knows minds of author.

Disappointing ...
So, the story basically is :
Horo likes a "young boy" and she becomes the "god of a good harvest" of his town.
Then she likes Lawrence, she travels with him and she becomes the god of a good harvest of another land? ...

No, it's not a volume. That small book comes with DVD of Ookami to Koushinryou II Episode 0, but I may be wrong too.

And the most tragic ending is that Lawrence could die, but not Holo, I guess.

One of the stories of Lazurus Long (by Robert Heinlein) delves into the love between the "long lived" and the "mayflies". It was published in 1973 and included in his "Time Enough For Love" anthologies, called "The Tale of the Adopted Daughter". Its quite lovely and sad at the same time, instructive for Spice & Wolf fans I think.

The same book has a story called, "The Tale of the Twins Who Weren't" ... which pokes holes at the incest taboo.

Is it include a story about "mayflies" women who kills herself when she realizes that her man is "long lived"? I don't remember the author.

I don't recall that incident... but its been a decade or two since I've read the series.

I still wonder how hard we'll all take it -- if it's a downer ending. At the rate we're (the English readers) going, it'll be years before we know how the series is resolved, and the longer the anticipation grows, the harder will be the letdown (if, and if, it resolves with heartbreak).

And the way the story is setup, it is a legitimate possibility.

I thought I'd set this sad, foul mood arest. So I used wikipedia. Here's my source:

http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%8B%...%99#7.E5.B7.BB

Without going into too much detail, it just says something like, "Before Horo began her journey with Lawrence.....ten year old boy, Klaus."

Simple and sweet. This story is about the 'before,' not the 'after,' though that doesn't mean the author could do the same thing anyway for the after, just that it hasn't been done yet.

A couple blogs support that rendition. Also, this is volume 7, side stories. Volume 6 is a normal volume...

EDIT:

Okay, so I went back and found out that the novel he was talking about, wasn't a volume. It was the visual novel for the spice and wolf series.
[狼と金の麦穂]

The sad news is that the blogs I've looked at for this work, seem to be of a similar opinion (though there is disagreement), that this takes place after the original Spice and Wolf novels.

That sucks...but it very may well be a little different from what you might be thinking...

EDIT2:

Spoiler for maybe future:

Wow that would be silly. It kinda reveals the end even before Hasekura writes the last volume...and this visual novel was released a long time ago.

unless the author had something to do with the making of that visual novel I don't consider it cannon. It lays more on the category of anime filler which I tend to ignore completely for the character always end up out of character with a single trait as their personality.

Well, it was not so much a visual novel as it was a short story with lots of pictures. Though I have it, I still don't know what to think of it. I'll make my decision after the last novel comes out.

February 10, 2011....Volume 16....seems this is the end of the series! (though it also seems there will be a side-story type volume 17 released sometime in the summer)

The following is an extract of the interview to Araki Hitomi who is a Dengekibunko editor.

By the 16th volume that will be released on February 10, an original story reaches to the last chapter at last.
The event related to the big trade by which precautionary measures were taken beforehand from the middle stage of the story is completed by this volume.
Next, the 17th volume that collected the short story is due to be released at the early summer time, and the novelettes of the newly-written work describing the end of a travel of peddler Lawrence and Wise Wolf Holo are due to be collected.
"Spice and Wolf" is completed by this 17th volume at last.
Please see the last of their travel with your own eyes for whether "the story in which happiness continues all the time" which was a theme of this work exists!

It seems that the end of their travel is collected by Vol.17 Side Colors.

The following is an extract from author's blog on January 10.

The 16th volume of "Spice and Wolf" comes out next month.
It is equivalent to the last volume in an original story.
In construction, because I was never able to write that and this, I plans to write them separately. So the story continues for a moment.
However, I think that you understand what Lawrence and Holo will do after all if you read this.

I think that Vol.16 has the happy ending, and Vol.17 has the story which make the reader cry.
Probably, Vol.17 is a story between Vol.16 and Kin no Mugiho.
The end of a travel may mean the end of life's journey instead of Yoits.

And its going to take so long for it to be in my hands in english

Another 7 years is going to be painful (based on Yen not releasing the side stories at the same time as a main novel, and not upping the release schedule)

So, does that mean Volume XVII (which I will dub Side Colors IV in anticipation of a formal title) will have all the short stories yet to be collected into Volume format? ... I can only hope!

Come on Hasekura... don't let me down!

Thank you very much for the update Kaguya!!!!

I'm really thinking about that Heinlein short story of the "immortal" (Lazurus) and his "mortal" love told in that epic At Long Last Love story collection... how that story arc ended specifically.
