Now it's possible he about to say that if there were any spirits his esp would pick it up? And Naru is the first one to mention Oliver Davis as an PK - ST user. And then John says he was more of a researcher than an a user.

Anyway I'm trying to say - in a rambling and very dippy way - I think Naru is the son/youngest brother of Oliver Davies.

I'm really sorry I sound so convoluted. This is the first time I've really had such a good pour over a manga with someone. It's making me hyper. Plus I've had like four hours sleep in the last day. Maybe I should go to bed for the sake of all our sanity.

I dunno, I doubt that the mentioning of Oliver Davis is totally just a coincidence since I believe nothing is said in the manga with out some relativity but I dont know if I totally buy the fact that Naru could be related to him. Plus Im not sure that Naru has the type of ESP that Masako has. I dont think he can see spirits like she can since why would he keep hiring her (is that what youre getting at?) I dont doubt that Naru's powers go beyond the spoon bending, I just dont know that will ever know fully since he cant/wont use them.

Wow, such an interesting thread !

Curiosity totally got me few days ago after watching some of the anime episodes. Somehow, I've managed to have a quick look at the manga up to vol 9. Chinese version, but i'm not sure. Worst of all is that I'm far from being fluent in chinese, so all I could do was some rambling "ahah nice doodles" ... "wah creepy ghost" ... Blame my lack of knowledge ><

Anyway, i've somehow built my own theories, and that's why I'm posting in the first place

So here it comes...

First, about Mai's dreams.

As far as I could follow the storyline without understanding dialogues, I've distinguished two types of dreams :

• those with Naru (note that he's not always in "smile-mode". Because I can't really understand the storyline, I won't sort them into subtypes) ;

• those without Naru.

I couldn't find others criterias as to know if the source of these dreams are differents.
But, my (failing ^^; ) instinct tells me that :

• the dreams including Naru may be some sort of astral projection, or even latent telepathy between them (damn, is that even possible ?), at least a bound she has with Naru for some reason. For instance, in volume 4, one of Mai's dream includes Naru, and she can clearly see Ayako & Masako performing an exorcism (i think ?) through walls. I would have write another example, but it's from volume 7 so I'll keep myself from spoiling too much

• the dreams without Naru could basically be from Mai's latent ESP. She is prone to feel strong "resonance" from the spirit world, if I may say. It seems there's some clear examples in vol.6 (D day -10 for Del Rey release ^^).

On a side note about Mai,

during the sewers incident (vol.3), when that "spirit" (was it one ?) appeared, Mai was "silently" calling Bou-san & Ayako to the rescue. I do think that this somewhat powerful call for help was what disbanded the "spirit". Did the manga confirm or infirm that ?

Then, there's Naru "I'm the mysterious but quite handsome guy, don't you think so ?" case
And that's where I start to cry because images alone won't give me clear hints about his background ! Once again, my crazy imagination comes to the rescue...

IMO, that Naru is an ESPer is a fact. His first spoon bending (from anime's episode 7 - manga vol.3) was a real ability however the second one (in episode 10 - manga vol.3) was deliberately a fake. I'm guessing here that he knows illusionist tricks because it's part of his job, and his job seems to be his life.

Something tells me that he's from a wealthy family, might be because of his Mannerism. And since he is the mysterious guy, he tends to have some sad background, like being the sole heir and/or his parents dying in a strange accident probably involving ESP. Therefore, he left to some distant relatives abroad (Lin anyone ?) where he learns about ESP & co. He comes back to Japan in his 16/17's with Lin and start the SPR.

As for him collasping after the sewers incident (vol.3), I do think this is due to a chain of effects. First, his spoon-bending : using this kind of power might be a bit tiring. Second, his fall : like many have already pointed out, he may be injured and when the adrenaline rush finished its work, he collapses because of the pain.

Is he a PK-ST ? It seems so, if we consider he is an ESPer. Is that all ? Hmm, I really wonder. Some cryptic part of vol.9 might partly answer this question...
In all cases, the hypothesis of Lin being his guardian is interesting. He could possibly be both a distant relative and a guardian. That would explain why he was so upset about the spoon bending ; considering how using ESP may be a energy loss/anemia problem, he can't let Naru deliberately do something that would lead him to hospital.

On a final note about Naru,

I was pondering about the fact that Naru's name wasn't on the door when he was at the hospital (vol.3). And I've come to 3 potential conclusions, one is crazier than the latters :

1. Shibuya Kazuya is an alias and the room indicated his real name. He doesn't want anyone to know it so he or Lin removed it. It could partially work if he had given his exact location in the hospital to Bou-san, Ayako and Mai. (Note that it can be reverted : he used an alias at the hospital and don't want Mai-tachi to know it).
2. Maybe he just wanted to avoid any impromptu visits so he or Lin removed the name.
3. No reason, really. Just feeding the "mysterious guy" legend ^^;

Any thoughts ?

I hope my assumptions wasn't too boring, it seems i've written a block ^^; . I'll put away my english dictionnary for now
I shall ask Santa Amazon Claus to bring me US Ghost Hunt volumes for x-mas since in France there is no license !

Ive thought from the beginning, whether I posted about it or not that Shibuya Kazuya isnt his real name. Just since it was hinted way back in vol 1 that Naru means more then just a nick name to him but besides that I have no other proof just that women intution

I remembered Mai commenting on his long eyelashes as soon as I read it. But I never clued in on the eye folds at all. In my defense, I only recently learned (since after I've read v3) about the effect of eye folds on Asian versus non-Asian looks. I vaguely remember being puzzled as to what Mai meant now that I think back on my reading that. Very good memory, White Manju Bun and Hesquidor!

I'll be upfront with everyone. I know things about Naru and Mai's dreams that I've learned from people who have read the novels and listened to the CD dramas. I don't know all the answers to our questions especially questions about Lin and Masako unfortunately. I promise that I won't write anything that I know in advance of the manga here in the forum. I don't want anyone to accidentally learn something h/she doesn't want to know just yet. (I will admit my theorizing is based in part on my spoiler knowledge. So I'm very careful about what I will and won't theorize about.) However, if you absolutely positively want to know some answers before they are revealed in the manga (whenever that may be), I'll tell you what I know in a PM if you promise not to share that knowledge on the forum not even under a spoiler button.

Well it took me about 3 times reading that vol before I went "hey wait a minute" but I definitely think thats a huge clue to Naru in general. Sneaking something small like that in really makes me wonder what else I might have missed in other vols

Now that I think even more about it, I bring you Hessie's half-baked theories. Naru could possibly be Oliver Davis or a relation of. Davies is supposed to have PK and ESP. And he has a brother who is a pefect medium. Now we know that Naru could have PK - ST(?) as demostrated by his first spoon bending. He could also have ESP and is maybe affecting Mai's dreams. And didn't he say in Vol 1 or 2 that he wished he could have a more reliable medium, but he said it in a way that implied that maybe he had experience with dealing with such a person.

Was your spoiler theory originally part of your post? I don't remember it from earlier.

When I first read v3 with its long discussion of famous PK users, Oliver Davis was the only name I didn't recognize immediately. All of the other persons named are very well-known: Edgar Cayce, Jean Dickson (side comment: I giggled at how the Del Rey's text made it sound like Edgar Cayce & Jean Dickson were one person), Nina Ksomething (I've seen old Soviet films of her on TV shows), and Uri Geller. I knew them all right away except Oliver Davis. So I googled him. The name Oliver Davis came up about two dozen times, but none of them were related to psy research or anything psy related whatsoever. I decided he had to be fictional.

Later in v4, John and Monk-san discuss Oliver's brother Eugene. I knew they had to be fictional characters because a psychic researcher with strong PK-ST powers who has a brother who's considered a perfect medium would certainly have shown up in a Google searched somehow.

I know what you mean. I'm both happy and sad that I know what I know. It gives me a different perspective from everyone else's. Sometimes I wish I didn't know so much. Other times, I'm glad that I do because I can be so impatient to learn everything I possibly can when I'm intrigued by a subject.

Obviously he's got some connection to this series (whether being fictional or not) since he's mentioned alot now.
Im still not totally buying Naru being related to him though. It seems that if Monk-san and John had both heard of Oliver Davis then they may have heard of Naru but since in my last post I said I dont think Shibuya Kazuya is his real name then maybe they hadnt (gah Im rambling now) but I think Davis has some significance to this but maybe he was just thrown into make the explanation of PK alittle easier for us non-pk people

I had a similar thought. Since this has happened a couple of times already, I don't think it needs a spoiler button any more.

Whenever Mai reaches panic stage and starts mentally calling for help, sI've noticed that someone almost always arrives with to help and the evil thingie that's threatening her disappears. So far nothing obvious in the manga explains this as far as I can see. My three theories on this:

1) Mai is somehow partially able to disperse the evil thingie herself.
2) Mai's call for help reaches others on a subliminal level.
3) Bad reliance on plot coincidence by the novelist.

Reasons number one and two are theories I wouldn't mind having confirmed. Reason number three would be very disappointing to learn.

I started to wonder that too after a while. Since when Mai is scared it seems someone always comes to help her, however

When Mai goes to chk the camera she's the "children" outside the window now during this she knocks formalin on the floor which causes her to pass out before she does she calls for someone to help her. After Mai passes out she has a dream and then wakes up back in the nurses office.

Now we dont know when Mai is saved or by who in this case but then later when the floor falls out on the classroom, Naru is there to help her.

But also from vol 3 Mai calls for help in her head, like when she can Naru are in the sewer and the spirit leaves before Lin shows up.

More stuff to ponder over...

Btw the way I noticed a MAJOR flaw bwtn the manga and the anime relating to vol 3 and epi 7

In the manga Naru is very careful to not give out his full name to anyone in the school as he states at the end of the vol but I watched 7 raw again and you clearly hear him say his full name to the sensei. I know my jap isnt great but I know what he said, so Im wondering how they're gonna translate epi 10

Okay, I've actually got a lot of what could be spoilers. I got them from reading a fanfic story by a girl who appears to have read both the books and mangas that are available in japan. While I am not supposed to be linking to the website where her fanfics for ghost hunt are, I will do so for reference for everyone. This does have the potential to ruin the mystery of a lot that goes on behind the scenes in ghost hunt.

Naru's real name is Oliver Davis and supposively it's a fake name or person, I am unsure. Eugene is his brother(not completely sure) and (prepare yourselves), he visits Mai in her dreams not Naru. Which would explain why he doesn't seem to have any clue about what goes on in her dreams and how he seems much more informed about what's really going on in her dreams. A lot of the time he reveals information to Mai that when she tells Naru he seems surprised. While Naru's SPR has a slightly different name, it's actually a branch for the british agency.

I've got to admit when I learned this stuff I was really surprised, but it does explain a lot.

I know, I couldn't believe it after I read that story. I mean most of the spoilers aren't really explained so I am not 100% positive on all of it especially the dream part, but the first sentence sentence she does explain. While her fanfic is pretty good, it still does reveal a lot of the story.
