Are you totally insane?
Hajime no ippo is an aboslute for anyone that likes sports anime.
So is Slam Dunk.

ANJ I could understand if you get turned off by since it's from early 70's, but it's still the bad-ass with chara development you were looking for.

I think it was mentioned earlier, but it's hard to beat Prince of Tennis for over the top effects. It starts off as plain tennis, but by the end of the series it's practically dragonballz on a tennis court.

Don't watch slam dunk. I hate anime from the manga that didn't end in the anime. It will just leave you hanging.

Second Major, Ookiku Furikabutte, Prince of Tennis.

If you want sports to be the center of the story I would not recommend Suzuka, several years later I still have very mixed feelings about that show - I couldn't stop watching it but I hated all of the characters.

Then just read the manga to finish off the story. It's not like anime did something to prevent the story from being finished by reading the manga (i.e. Claymore). In fact, it was one of the truest manga adaptations I've ever seen, even with all the scene stretches. A lot, if not all, of the feelings and moments in the manga were excellently conveyed in animation. It is a must see and read for anyone who wants a sports series.

I find it absolutely normal, nowadays. I read comics and manga in my palmtop, as well. Books? Hah, only e-books, nowadays.

I'm sorry to hear that. However, your disability is a poor determining factor for whether people other than yourself is going to enjoy a series or not.
