Second Major, Ookiku Furikabutte, Prince of Tennis.
If you want sports to be the center of the story I would not recommend Suzuka, several years later I still have very mixed feelings about that show - I couldn't stop watching it but I hated all of the characters.

Then just read the manga to finish off the story. It's not like anime did something to prevent the story from being finished by reading the manga (i.e. Claymore). In fact, it was one of the truest manga adaptations I've ever seen, even with all the scene stretches. A lot, if not all, of the feelings and moments in the manga were excellently conveyed in animation. It is a must see and read for anyone who wants a sports series.
