anyone else noticed the reference to the Konami Code?
Rikka reminds me a bit of OreImo's Kuroneko and a bit of Haganai's Kobato which is coincidentally both voiced by KanaHana. Too bad Rikka's not voiced by her lol, if it were it would be too much of... something I like Rikka's VA though, she's a bit new but good.

Ayup. I still wonder where she learn that from, considering this gimmick was no longer used for... eons, really
Oh and... I really wonder what kind of nurse it was, because you would have major troubles if you are caught asking a non medical professional to give any medecine and whatnot to a patient.

In general, school medical staff tend to have more generalized over-the-counter types of medicines that should be safe to use. I doubt there's any prescription medications on-hand there.

Went in expecting a slice of life comedy. After the first few minutes, my hopes were raised that maybe some super natural elements would be included. Those were soon dashed, and then raised again with Takanashi started talking. In the end, all those hopes were dashed, and my original expectation of slice of life comedy was dumped for generic, over the top slapstick. Don't think I'll be continuing this.

Man, if only women made kawaii sounds like that if you whack them IRL. Odds are you'd be arrested if you tried anything like that lol.
But holy crap, Rikka already on first name basis with Yuuta? Whoah, she moves fast.

Though I think our MC's sister (the middle school aged one) looks pretty close to Chitanda, though the hair is different. (Hair being one of the biggest aspects to character design, so it's not that close) |

This was kind of a really mediocre start and coming right off of Hyouka, one of my favorite shows of the year, probably didn't help at all. I wasn't a fan of the concept since the beginning since it mostly sounded and looked like KyoAni going right back to their slapstick and way-too-cutesy comfort zone, but I admit that if pulled off well it could be really interesting!
It is a shame then that the first episode left me as indifferent as it did. For as exciting and funny as some of it wants to be, it just kind of ends up fizzling into nothingness. Even if it's an interesting concept to have a male lead who tries to be boring for the sake of not embarrassing himself, it doesn't make the fact that he's a big dull dud any less true. In contrast, the female lead is embarrassing, sometimes funny, and a lot of times made out to be so cute that it felt like they were pandering so bad that I wanted to cringe. I'll give it some time to see where it goes, but if this is what the show is primarily going to be, I doubt I'll last for the whole ride. Last edited by Cloudenvy; 2012-10-04 at 12:01. |

Now I have my lighter and softer show to balance out my weekly Mabu Rabu.
Chuunibyou, a word to describe that embarrassing moment in our life. I indeed could recognize myself in some of the things described in this episode. Like I have said earlier, for me, it was a mix of Lovecraft and Michael Moorcock with a dash of Clamp (especially RG Veda and X/1999). Add to that my first incursion in gothic metal (read the lyrics of that song, you can understand why it would appeal to a chuuni), and King of Fighters when Iori Yagami appeared to me as a totally awesome character. In the light of this, you can understand why it was both funny AND embarrassing to watch this episode. And I think that self-deprecation in regard of our younger selves IS the point of this anime. To me, it worked. 15/20 for the first episode. |
