This list is complete trash because it has an obvious bias towards certain types of animes. As much as I am glad to see Shinji at #1 for last decade as Evangelion is my favorite anime, both lists in general are trashy as hell...

80s: Didn't really watch 80's anime except maybe Lupin the III
90s: Awesome that Sailor Mercury got 7th
2000's: Yuki got high up in the ranks so I'm happy but how did Yui get so low?

Magazine aimed at mecha fans has mecha bias, I for one am totally shocked. *mumbles something about Destiny, Frontier, Geass and 00 being 4 of the highest selling series of the last decade*

Actually Ranka has a heck of a lot more AMVs on Nico Nico than Sheryl from what I've been told. Sheryl's just popular period, she hasn't been out of the Newtype monthly polls since she entered, and she finished 2nd in the last two Anime Grand Prix (Animage). She was second behind Yui in the latest one and before that it was C.C. She'll probably be top 3 in the next one if the 2nd Frontier movie does the right thing by her...

A Newtype is theorized to be the next stage of human evolution in the fictional Gundam universe. This minor but groundbreaking metamorphosis is usually expressed as a heightened mental awareness, the result of an evolutionary adaptation to life in space.

So naturally, you will see lists dominated by mecha characters from the magazine. Because that's their fanbase. If it was done in Megami and Dengeki, you'd get a list dominated by moe characters, particularly those that those magazines promote regularly.

If you want a more general, definitive list - you'd need to a survey/online poll to be done which doesn't have biases such as genre, source, location, gender, age.

Polls are relative only to those that participated. They are not definitive for the anime community as a whole. Don't consider them to be 'the way'. Opinion and taste all depend on the individual and a mix of nature + nurture which made you who you are. Take from those lists what you will and move on. Just because a predominantly mecha fanbase doesn't like what you like doesn't make them right/better than you.
