internet connection

Hi, I live in Brooklyn and I have a dial up connection because broadband is not available to me. I would like to know if there are any places where I could go to get hooked up to a broadband connection.

What do you mean by getting hooked up? You should be able to call up Verizon, for example, and see if DSL service is available to you. Their website for residential service will let you enter your telephone number to find out for yourself.

Time Warner had also offered Road Runner service about a year back while I was still in Manhattan as well.

Do you mean cafes that offer Internet service instead?

I did speak and check our phone number on the net and dsl is not available in my area. When I said hooked up I meant connecting my laptop to a broadband source so that I can download stuff. My current home dial up connection is just so slow. I want to know if there are places that I could take my latop and have a faster connection to net for the purpose of downloading.

Internet cafês, libraries, your working place / university... those are the usual places you should be able to get behind a 100 meg broadband.

Removed post for personal reasons. Move along now; nothing to see here.

There may also be usage rules involved. These guys are providing a free service so people can get on-line easily. The downloading of anime is, odds are, not high on their builders' list of reasons for setting them up. Whether or not you are limited to the amount of data uploaded/downloaded, no idea.
FREE ONLINE SERVICE!!! WOO HOO!!! I'll be searching for THAT!!!

Well, they're not all that helpful, come to think of it, as the downloading of a large file can take some time to finish. The speed available in the U.S. generally isn't all that great, IMHO, excluding schools, well-funded corporations, and such.

What are you going to do really? Sit in Bryant Park all day to take advantage of this? It'll be a waste, really, unless you're really bored and have absolutely nothing to do for days.

remase2 might be better served by seeing if there are other ISPs serving his specific part of Brooklyn like Time Warner, RCN, and etc.

Risking sounding like a broken record, but the takeaway points are:

Please also try and not ruin the public service that they are providing as well.

Well, thank you, I must say. You have just destroyed whatever sympathy I had for the general public with this remark. Whether or not you meant it as a joke is irrelevant. Cheers.

You may want to double check on that. Verizon also said the same crap to my father's business, a 100 ft more than permitted length. But we went with another DSL provider who setup the DSL for us anyways... even at 768/128, speeds were fine. We use cloud9 dsl

If still no dsl, then free wireless is available for the general public. Here's the website.

I have yet to see a place in NYC that does not have highspeed access. There's Verizon, Comcast,Optimum, Covad, RoadRunner, AOL, MSN, etc just to name a few.

I know that Verizon online will say that you do not have service yet but if you call in, they will hook you up. Also, I think Verizonwireless and Sprint Wireless are testing 3G networks already in NYC so check those sites up.
