IIRC, in one of the latest interviews Urobuchi said he wrote the ending with a possible continuation in mind. And Shinbo expressed his desire to make a sequel (aside from the SoL thing you mentioned) if it was possible.

So you never know....

A few general comments based on the spoilers I've read here...

Spoiler for Madoka Magica Episodes 11 and 12:

First and foremost, I'm very glad that Gen apparently didn't go for a total bad end. Not a total happy one, of course, but that was made almost impossible by the narrative set-up going into this ending anyway (as well as by Gen being the writer ).

Like how cops found Sayaka's body. More realistic that way.

Like how it sounds like Homura was very bad ass in both Episode 11 and Episode 12.

Very much like how Madoka made a grandiose wish that has a real major impact, probably for the better if I'm reading things right. Glad to see she wasn't forced to carry the idiot ball in order to achieve a bad end.

Like how Gen showed real ambition here, and went with an end that's not quite what anybody was predicting (if I'm reading people right).

Love how the potential for a sequel lies here, it seems.

That's all for now. Will say more after I watch the subs I'm sure!

I cried. This rarely happens. THAT WAS AN EPIC ENDING.

So wait, lemme get this straight:

Spoiler for episode 12:

Madoka wishes to erase all witches from existence. Said wish is so insane that while it comes true it means that she can no longer exist in the universe.
All puella magi throughout time are saved => all the grief and whatever taken in by Madoka => Madoka goes witch => Goddess!Madoka kills witch!Madoka (wait what?)
Scene with Mami and Kyouko was in her head.
Sayaka is the only one not saved because otherwise Kamijo would still be handicapped (WTF don't save the jerk) Sayaka accepts this because she wants him (and Hitomi) to be happy.
Homura and Tatsuya are the only ones to remember Madoka in the reset world.
New puella magi system is that they don't become witches when they run out of magical power, but simply disappear.

That's what I figured from limited Japanese, but what I still didn't quite understand:

WHAT WERE THOSE GIANT WHITE MONK THINGS?
AND WHY DID HOMURA HAVE WINGS?

I always expecting there will be a happy ending, but the final episode turn on a different way : There is BAD ENDING, I mean a DEAD ENDING because Madoka is dissapeared early. The last scene show Homura and the messengers without being Sayaka, Kyouko, Mami and Madoka together, really. It's really a story which has no dream and hope, but nightmare and despair.

On 2nd watch it seems that they Homura can now extract and crystallize the accumulating grief and give them to QB directly, bypassing the need for GS.

I don't think they disappear, since they can transfer the darkness directly to QB now, I think (have to re watch to make sure lol)

Homura somehow gained another digit as she taps to the Madoka holy spirit. What a Good Friday this is.

Jokes aside. I personally need to get a sub later on too. The stream proved too finicky and I missed out significant portions of Miki Sayaka's discussion with Madoka and Homura with Incubator. What is stuck in my head is the fact that Madoka is basically with Homura "all the time" now, and what it really means is anyone's guess.

I do not see this as a despair ending at all. It is however the most inconclusive that I've ever seen from Urobuchi Gen.

So how are magical girls supposed to clean their soul gems or whatever now? Can you use magic as much as you want now, without it dimming your soul gem? Meaning, you can only die if you're wounded in a fight? Otherwise it would make no sense, every magical girl's life time would be limited to the few times they use magic: If your soul gem dims everytime you use magic to kill those witch-substitutes there needs to be a way to clean your gem again...

Not quite the bad ending I expected, but I'm fine with it

The monks are probably curse -- the same thing that created witches in the old world. Even without Witches curse still exist.

The wings are not explained anywhere, but I guess it's just a form of Homura's ability. (space/time related attack or something)

Inconclusive?? This was a wonderfully closed ending, if I ever saw one!

Urobuchi Gen was feeling exceptionally merciful. And the one character i cared for the most throughout the show stays miraculously alive to tell the tale. I'm delighted
