I never really understood why people translated a name that's pronounced "Sharuru" into "Carla."

it's from an official glossary given to QB, the translator responsible, if I'm not wrong.

It might even actually be "Charles" (the French pronunciation, of course, with a silent "s"), because in the opening sequence of the OVA, it spells out her name as such.

It's weird how many things change once the manga is released in English by Kodansha, like when they revealed that Juvia's surname is "Lockser" instead of "Loxar," "Fried's" name is actually "Freed," and "Bixlow" is "Bickslow." It's probably because people grow so accustomed to fan translations that they take them as official translations, since they're so much more accessible to everyone. There has been more than one account of people going to Wikipedia and changing Ur's name to "Ul" just because her daughter Ultear was named after her being the tears of her mother (and no, that's not a manga spoiler; it was stated clearly by Siegrain/Jellal in episode 18, where Ultear was revealed to be Ur's daughter in the first place). And don't get me started on Jellal/Gerard...

Of course, this brings up the fact that, in the first season, there were instances of Erza's name being spelled "Elsa" or "Elza." Well, I believe in one of those episodes, the scene was edited to spell her name as "Erza" (episode 10, where you can see Erza's name written on that tally board where she and Natsu are fighting). At least, it was edited when I checked out the episode uploaded by Funimation, so maybe the same was done for the home release in Japan. But I can't say for sure.

What Mashima was originally intended was "Charles". Read back through this thread to the start of the Oricon Seis arc, and you can see the "WTF Charles is a guys name! That's so stupid!" type reactions that provoked due to the minor detail that in English, Charles is pretty much exclusively a male name. Seeing as Quarkboy, the translator for Crunchyroll's Fairy Tail subs (aka, the official anime subs) reads these forums, said reaction was relayed, with the eventually result being a change to Carla.

Actually, the thing with Ul/Ur is because IIRC, there's a mismatch between the Crunchyroll subs, and the Del Rey/Kodansha manga translation. William Flannagan, the translator for the manga used Ur, and Quarkboy used Ul. Given the relationship between Ul and Ultear, and that Ultear's name is supposed to be derived from Ul's, I suspect that the manga's use of Ur is an error that crept into the whole process, and would not be surprised to see it use Ul the next time her name comes up.

This episode only proves how useless Lucy really is. That wool attack would have been completely useless if Bickslow had fought properly.

Talk about taking an exaggerated view point. Lucy is having to fight without her ace which is a serious handicap. It'd be like having Natsu disallowed from using his roar. Besides since the fight was thrown how can we possibly guess at how ineffective the wool attack would have been? The cave doesn't give Bickslow nearly as much open space as the last time he and Lucy fought, not to mention he doesn't have much in terms of replacements for his dolls. Just because Freed and Bickslow agreed to throw the fight before it got started doesn't give anything to judge Lucy or Cana's abilities from.

Freed showed again how awesome is he! I wonder the "couple" that will be against Mirajane will they fight? heh ... She only fought once in the last 2 years! I really wanted freed to become S class but it doesnt matter , he didn't become because he had a good reason !

Spoiler for Episode 98: Both halves of this episode are both made up of events that fill one chapter. Naturally, that means that several parts have been drawn out. One part that was made longer was the fight between Team Cana and Team Freed. In the manga, Lucy takes both Freed and Bickslow out using Aquarius, but in the anime, Aquarius just bashes her and Cana on the head, bickers with Cana (an entertaining bit, considering Cana and Aquarius are both played by Eri Kitamura, who must have had fun arguing with herself), and leaves. Bickslow loses after Lucy unleashes Aries's fluffy wool on him and takes him out with a truly epic "LUCY KICK", while Cana literally traps Freed in a cage of women and leads him into an electric trap and knocks him out on her own. While it may have been drawn out, I feel it helped provide a nice boost of confidence for Cana since she single-handedly defeated someone who once defeated her, even though Freed was holding back on purpose, justifying his lame performance (though it wasn't nearly as lame as Virgo, another highlight). Spoiler for Next week: Natsu vs. Gildarts Exactly what it says on the tin. Looks like we'll also be getting some more flashbacks of young Natsu and Gildarts to draw things out, but I really do like the fatherly relationship Gil has with Natsu, like he sort of filled some void that Igneel left Natsu with, even though Igneel remains an irreplaceable figure for Natsu (hell, Natsu practically calls Igneel his dad). At this rate, the episode will also cover two chapters of the manga. Oh, and to add what I said before about Erza's name being spelled in English in the anime, well, they did it again, and it's spelled in nice big capital letters to make "E-R-Z-A". __________________ I'm not the boss. I just know what you should be doing.

Ryus The One Eyed King Join Date: Apr 2009 Location: Lurking Up Ahead	Spoiler for Episode 98: They fillered the fight but overall it was still funny... preferred how the manga did it since it was faster and made the "throwing" of the fight seem less stupid but still it was good overall. Then again, Aquarius again being Lucy's saving spirit is a bit boring... and adding Aries was a nice touch. It would have been funnier though if the girls pushed him down as if he was on a bed and climbed on top of him, or atleast bounced more on his lap... though that would have likely been too much of a tv show for kids They also thankfully cut some of Gray's more naked shots... so I guess I can't complain about the lack of bouncing At least the card trap was nice and kinda added to the manga's core idea of Freed throwing the fight so he could make up for earlier... it was kinda payback __________________

Normally you'd think that the non-fighting route would be for the best, but I'm not sure. Cana honestly needed a confidence boost and she wouldn't get that from just walking through without fighting anything. Natsu proves here that he has the worst luck going up against Gildarts. Think it'd be funny if Gajeel and Levy get the non-fighting route since you can tell Gajeel is hyped up for some battles. Guessing the other results should be fun. I mean possible we'll get a sibling showdown with Lisanna and Elfman possibly fighting or either of them going up against Mirajane. Good on Freed to throw the fight though. This means a lot to Cana and considering what he did I'm not surprised he threw the fight. Though suppose you could say he would also owe Elfman after what he did to him during that earlier arc. He really chose a funny way to lose with faking a huge weakness to women. Though I suppose you could say he had some fun that way . He really does have faith that Laxus will come back at some point. I wouldn't rule it out since after some time on his own he should mellow out some more. Plus if he really gets it together I'd be surprised if Makarov kicks him out forever. Things are getting interesting though. Should get some unusual matchups. __________________ Anime-Evo
