Getting to see Ranko's back story is nice, but I found it's a bit late in the series, if it's supposed to be one season already... unless they're already planning a second season (which I also would appreciate).
I think this episode made me like Ranko a little more.

Parents that don't know about it. The video shop keeper told him to keep it a secret from his parents. Since he has a TV and dvd player on his room, he can watch all by himself.
His father probably never thought that he would be able to get zombie movies in the first place (which he wouldn't if the shopkeeper wasn't some zombie fan), so no reason to check back on it.

Wow, Wanko is sure is sexy and hot since I first seen her... Our lead is one of those lucky guys out in the anime world, hehehe. I currently now torn between Rea and Wanko (or Ranko).
Rea is cute and hot.

Thumbs down Episode 7

This was the first episode of the anime adaptation that really disappointed me.
It was mostly anime original material that should fit better as a DVD/BD extra IMHO.

The first problem is that this episode disrupted the flow of the narration. We left episode 6 with that ominous shot of Rea licking Chihiro's blood but nothing came out of it. Not to mention that Rea's father has been absent from the show for 3 whole episodes now.

My second criticism is that episode 7 was so full of cliche it was painful. How many times must I watch a little girl falling in love with a boy because he protected her from a rabid dog before it gets old? Children of age 5-6 aren't even interested in the opposite gender yet. And to think that she'll keep loving Chihiro in secret for 10 years is beyond ridiculous.

The appearance of Chihiro's annoying pervert friend didn't help either. The only part of the episode I would salvage is the scene where Ranko tried to force a kiss on Chihiro and he looked distressed. It was that bad.

Speak for yourself. I proposed to a girl when I was four.

After watching episode 7, I can now safely say that I hate Ranko with every fiber of my being. If she has any redeeming qualities, I can't see them. She's not pretty, her personality sucks and pretty much everything she does makes matters worse.

Yeah, Chihiro's relationship with Rea isn't particularly healthy right now, but it's far better than anything he could have achieved with Ranko. Since they met, he never showed any interest in her (I tend to think he chased the dog away to protect his DVD, not Ranko) and I can't fathom why she hasn't given up on him by now.

I still thought the episode was enjoyable, but I'm glad that the next one will focus on Chihiro and Rea again. And we'll be getting to one of my favorite scenes from the manga, to boot.
Finally someone who thinks like me! I can't believe all this affection people have toward her. I don't get it. She's bossy, annoying and she doesn't even care about his feelings forcing HER way of life on him. Not that I'm fond of zombie freak, but he damn deserves to live his life as he pleases not being harrased and beaten up by some freak girl. For me she's on the same level as him. Come on, her feelings are just sick. He's been obviously ignoring her and not wanting contact, yet she's completely blind to that. I hate that kind of bossy girls. Rea's much better. She's got character and something in herself. Aside from the fact that's she's not living thing anymore but as she still acts like one I don't have much problems with that part.

What, when they argued about which movie to rent? Notice that Chihiro didn't ask for her opinion, period. He just took the zombie movie to the counter. Notice, also, that nowadays she borrows zombie movies from him. If anything, the contagion went the other way. And that's not even taking into account the propriety of having a little girl watch a zombie movie.

She ran downstairs to ask her parents and they told her, "Not until you're 18." But we were both army brats, so we both ended up moving away. Our families did visit each other a couple times and ... well, I find nothing unrealistic about childhood friend romances in anime.

It's not just when they were kids, she was advancing on him looking for kiss and Chihiro clearly must have known that she wanted one. He's clearly oblivious but Ranko didn't give up on him. She kept forcing herself onto him till he finally realised that she's got feelings for him. Even when they were kids, Chihiro wanted to be just by himself but she kept suggesting doing something else with her.

From the moment she entered his room without his permission, she made the wrong impression on me. I wasn't too fond of her from the moment she appeared on the screen.

With this episode I was hoping we'd get some kind of explanation for Chihiro's obsession with zombies but well now I'm underwhelmed. All we got is what we already know. In a sense, this episode was the true filler that it served absolutely no purpose in advancing the plot even though I sort of enjoyed it.

Their parents obviously thought he was a bit young to become a hikkikomori...

Doesn't mean he has to like it. I'd be pissed too if I were being forced to do something against my will.

Fact remains that he's not interested in her and never has been. She thinks that he'll 'eventually come around if she pushes hard enough, but he has his eyes set on someone else, and whether he likes her because she is a zombie, or if it's something else about her that sparked his interest, is anyone's guess right now.

And it's probably highly unlikely that he'll eventually hook up with Ranko should he be unable to preserve Rea's body. I think a guilt trip like that would be an even worse reason to take her, as that would mean he doesn't truly love her, but uses her as a replacement for the girl he used to love. And I'm pretty sure she'd understand that over time.

Why she would bother to hang out with him then? She could've left if she wanted. No one forced her, I can hardly believe there was no one aside from zombie freak to be friends with. She acts like she was the only one human being on Earth. Or she's just a sadist who enjoys messing up people's lives and bossing people around. As much as I hate this kind of people I could at least understand. She likes to hurt so she enjoys him being unhappy and uncomfortable. I don't really understand how she can call it love when all she's been doing is being one big pain for him. Is that how you should act around person you think you love? Making their life uncomfrotable and unhappy? Her cheering herself up by shouting that she won't give up made me smile. I mean, she already lost which is the only thing that keeps me from dropping this show as I hate such girls and can't stand them

Its hard to say either but probably she's acting the opposite of what she feels or she is just doing something to get attention from Chihiro. It's not unusual in an anime where a girl bullies the guy they like.

Guess love has many faces and ways for it to be express.

In reality, no.

you can't really question the placement of a flashback episode until you see the one following it. It's the flow on effect that's what's critical to the placements. Most of the times you are just too early to judge.

If anything, I agree that the whole osananajimi flashback looks really far-fetched. More that usual. I mean, this time the MC not only is the typical dumb MC, but he also never showed any feelings for her, never. So it seems a matter of bad writing more than her being bad. To the point that she would be good for him as gf, to cure his obsession I mean, but since the show is all about a zombie girl, for now her character looks disconnected and misplaced, out of place. And however apparently the one I can relate more with.

Yeah, I know how it usually is in anime. Sigh... I know that very well But that doesn't mean 'll accept that especially when there are people who like her. I hate this kind of girls. I don't care about her motivation and so on, scenes like punishing the boy by a girl using violence never made me laugh... I do appreciate hitting when it has meaning but I just can't stand behaviour like hers. Butting in and not considering his feelings. I don't think you get close to someone just by pushing yourself onto another person. I just wish to see more shows with something more than that with some meaning... For example my beloved Cross Game had childhood friends and it was damn realistic even though violence also occured...

Finally caught up with episode 7, was a decent episode for a filler(?). Sadly no scene involving Rea or Grandpa.
Spoiler for best scene in the ep:

Good thing not ALL girls are that way, though, otherwise this'd be a pretty boring world...

The most interesting part of the episode for me believe or not was how distant and unresponsive Ranko's father is... Don't understand why/how someone that blah ended up with someone with so much personality like Ranko's mother. The first conclusion I want to jump to is arranged marriage, but that's cliched. I'm probably reading into it too much. *shrugs*
