Seeing the figures of K-on are AKIMIYA MIO and MAIN CHARACTER centered. I expect more Mio merchandise in the future.

You mean the amount of Mio merchandise running around still isn't enough for you?

There's a competition! Yui! She's almost at par with Mio's merchandise.

Both have Dakimakura's, 1/8, 1/10 static figures, gashapons both appear...etc.

Though Mio has a her STRIPED BOWL

A simple shelf's worth will not suffice; An entire room's worth is in demand...

But a real living one is still the best.

Nah, I would rather have her as my maid.

Mio Akiyama happens to be one of my favorite anime characters, who also relates to me very well.

My nickname at school is Mio too, so it always reminded me of her.

Not only do I act like her [serious at times, but with a soft side of fear], but I sort of look like her [if my hair was straighter and I had bangs].

She's a cool character; being unique with the left handed base guitar.

I think the most noticeable uniqueness of Mio is because she is a lefty!

Yea, when I first was watching the series I didn't notice until they brought it up.

It was funny when they were selling those leftly guitars at the store in that one scene.

Yes... this is Japan and they're Japanese where most women average about 5'2" and smaller.

"really short" is relative...

It's her hairstyle. Long hair and bangs (and legs, baby) make for quite a height illusion. I myself had to look closely at the photos to see that she isn't as tall as Sakaki.

Your imperial to metric conversions are insufficiently precise. She is in fact 5'3, same as Kotomi and Kyou from Clannad.

And as Vexx points out, that's not short by Japanese standards... there's plenty of 4'11 characters out there, like Rena from Higurashi and Kei and Chihiro Shindou from EF.

I should point that out the next time someone teases the cute Chihiro cosplayer I like about her height... she's three inches taller than the character she cosplays, so there's not reason to worry about it. I'm sure she'll be happy to hear that.

The Japanese people I meet must be really tall then....most of them are my height (~174cm)...

Are the Japanese you know male or female? Remember, characters like Mio aren't just short because they're Japanese, but also because they're girls - females in Canada, the US, the UK, and Japan all average about 5 and a half inches less than males.

So if your friends are guys, they aren't actually that tall... the average height for a 19 year old Japanese male in 2006 was 171.5 cm. For comparison, the average 19 year old Japanese female in 2006 was 158cm.

Certain regional differences also apply... my wife's mother's side were all very tall (approaching 180cm) but we're pretty sure they are related to a strain used for the Imperial Guard way back when. My wife's father's side were all quite short (even the men rarely broke 160cm). My wife and all her female cousins on her dad's side (there were 9 aunts and uncles) are mostly around 150cm.

Japanese raised in America or Canada will *tend* to be a bit taller due to diet differences... and Japanese in Japan have been quietly getting a bit taller each generation.
