Seriously though, would she know what a "Mary Sue" is? Sure, she reads a lot, but I've never seen the term in a book, and isn't the usage like exclusively western?

This does not change the fact that you rickrolled us the first time around though, does it? o_o ... Oh, well. Posting the real thing restored part of the respect I held for you.

I wonder, though. How do we know Asakura 'wanted to cause pain'?

As I recall, all he really wanted to do, all he was programmed to do, was protect "his shadow".

'Sides, a desire to cause pain is inefficient unless you're intent on torturing someone into submission. Asakura had no intention of letting Kyon live, so submission is irrelevant. I see this more as the supposed 'cruelty' of cats, which I read explained as follows: cats are largely solo predators without a support network. If they engage a prey head-on and are injured, no one will take care of them (in nature). Therefore, it is better to hit a prey repeatedly and slowly wear it out, minimizing the risk to the cat. Of course when this behaviour is carried over to smaller prey like mice, it's rather disturbing to watch (and believe me, I know ... I've fought miss kitty over some of the things she dragged into my living room). Asakura may have simply wanted to disable Kyon so she couldn't use the gun, then finish her off when she was clearly incapacitated.

But of course, only the author knows ...

*poke* According to the US Census, Mary is the most common female name, and Smith is the most common surname. Mary Smith? 0.o Sounds like a compromise between Mary Sue and Jane Smith.

Well, we could do that, too. It sounds less stupid than "Jane Smith" at least.

I went back and read over chapter 4 of Disappearance, and when I read the part about the giant syringe again, this immediately came to mind:

Lucky Star on my mind... I think it was because of vivify93's post on Patti...

Which episode did that first appear in, anyway? If it was a later episode, and if it isn't in the manga prior to the second half of 2007 or at all, there's a possibility that the drill dentist guy is actually inspired by TTGL (after all, the two series aired at about the same time).

Spoiler for off topic reply to Cat Megex:

In other news... here's an image found by Dangoz (my brother) on some sort of mathematics competition ranking site. I have the line of interest highlighted.

Call it 'shopped if you like, but it's real.

So he's (other dango) in elementary school? ...And you :/ ?

The real Yuki would at least be in the top 10.

I'm not entirely sure if that's correct... the novel is kind of vague about it.

Of course, if we had a SECOND SEASON we could see exactly what it is, but...

again.. i said KINDA...
thou it was vague, in the uber long prologue of intrigues (vol 7) kyon used it similar to how one would use one of these medical device.

it may not look exactly like that but it's something similar (i was actually trying to find one that looked more similar to a pistol.. the one where you attach a bottle on top)

Since, we're busy manning up the weapons in the series, why not a 9mm pistol?

I assumed since (from the Baka Tsuki translation) his reaction to the gun was something like 'Ah, another thing that would stir up trouble,' I assumed it meant that what he was looking at was at least something that looked like a hand gun rather than a needle gun?

And that would be a rather swanky needle gun to be made of stainless steel :O
