well, it's not a licensed show yet, so it's okay to ask about it, i think... so far, AnY was the only group to sub any of it and they subbed only the preview ep of episode 01 (which is something that WOWWOW, the ppv network that airs Chevalier, likes to do with a lot of their series).... if you check AnY's forums, you'll see that they claim to be working on the show still, but I'll believe that when I see them release another episode... Shinsen Subs is considering picking up this show since Blood+ is ending and several of their other current series are only 12 eps... plus it's kind of their type of show... gothic horror with crossdressing and spirit possesion... what's not to love? SO>>>>> that means that, yes we are watching the show in Japanese and then I and to a lesser extent Aniki Meiski will then post summaries of the show and screencaps... like right now I'm going to go eat lunch and watch episode 05 (in a ginormous file that will hurt my computers's poor little brain)... then I will summarize and post caps... About D'Eon sword. The design looks really fancy, very different from the other knights. ^^ And he embeded his sister cross. ^^;; Is that his family heirloom? He seems came from a noble family. Or is it just a knight standard?

first, that sword of his is very non-standard...it's artistic license for the anime...it looks awesome, but I have my doubts how the guard at the hilt would hold up...
as for the cross, we learned (so did D'Eon) last episode that the specific cross he used is the symbol Le Secret Du Roi, which is King Louis XV's secret service...Duc de Broglie (the King's number 2 in the world of the anime) gave one of these crosses to D'Eon and made him part of LSDR (I believe the 4 M's used this cross to gain acces to and the trust of the Queen)...Lia was in LSDR and Louis sent her to Russia...we don't know for certain yet, but Voronzoff (the fur trader) probably had something to do with her death...
and basically, that cross of his sisters is what's allowing Lia's spirit to possess D'Eon's body...it has special powers...in Episode 1 it burned the heck out of Beaumarchais' arm (aroudn 19:00 min or so in my screenshots)... and the writing in blood on the sword comes from the cross...

not much action this ep, but a ton of plot... Blame D'Eon for saying something terrible to Anna in Ep for lack of action this week. Now Robin suggested that he should make it up for Anna by taking her out to Longchamp. Instead Robin volunteered to look for Voronzoff who was said to see his tailor on Easter day.

at the beginning, the 4 M's are discussing Voronzoff and the fact that Robin let him get away... D'Eon and RObin go outside to diiscuss it away from Durand and Teillagory... Durand opens the door suddenly and it hits Robin in the nose ...

there's a scene of Louis and Broglie (man, Louis has to sign a lot of documents!)...That desk is the Bureau du Roi

then D'Eon and Anna are riding in a carriage from Versailles to Paris... ... they stop at a church and go to confession... Anna and D'Eon grew up in Tonnere. He used to take ages to confess in the church and Anna had to wait for him. D'Eon said that he had to confess all his sins. (pretty dorky) Anna looks prettier this week.

once in the city, D'Eon see a lot of poor and homeless people on the streets and on a bridge... Anna likes that he worries about the poor... there is a commotion up ahead as a bunch of peasants are yelling at a carriage driver... D'Eon gets out to investigate and sends the carriage with Anna on its way... as he approaches, Voronzoff steps out of the carriage and brandishes his sword to make the crowd get back... he sees D'Eon and the carriage speeds off, but D'Eon finds another carriage and follows... Voronzoff sees D'Eon following him, so he gets out and walks through a market... D'Eon follows... in an alley, Voronzoff confronts D'Eon, but before D'Eon can do anything besides yell "kisama," Voronzoff jumps on his speeding coach and rides away, saying "Thanks to Le Secret du Roi"...

back with the 4 M's, The 4 M deduced that Voronzoff had been spreading false rumors about his whereabouts, like going to tailor, attending marquise de Merteuil's banquet, so these were all diversion. Vonronzoff was trying to get out of the country. Teillagory guess that he must be heading towards le Havre.... they look at a map of where he might be going, then they jump on horses and follow....

meanwhile as Louis with wife and son are leaving Versailles for something with full pomp, Broglie whispers something in his ear that dipleases him and he tells the Queen he has business to attend to....

then Voronzoff's driver refuses to go all the way to the sea, but V pays him off...

the 4 M's still follow, but way way behind...

at D'Orleans' place, D'Orleans is speaking to a large group of supporters, using Easter to gain support The duke was playing the popular card in Paris with Easter party. King Louis arrived. He thanked him for his work as regent but asked him not to trouble himself anymore. It would be different if he would like to fight with the King. Louis leaves making the guests think everything is fine, while D'Orleans is super pissed...

the 4 M's reach the sea port but find the carriage empty... D'Eon finds the driver and after some pestering, he tells them that Voronzoff is already on the ship they can see in the distance... D'Eon then says Voronzoff is going to Russia (I wasn't listening closely, but it's my guess that D'Eon is wrong and V is going to England)... anyway, here we see Robespierre for the first time... he's reading what appears to be an alchemy book... he's pretty darn cool... i wonder if he is in charge above D'Orleans... from the OP, I think he and St Germain are the real villains of the series... anyway, that scene is brief... god knows where he is going. They thought it was Russia. I think the gang will visit Russia before England



then i think the 4 M's get D'Orleans to sign a confession to the King about his sdealings with Voronzoff... they take it to Louis, but he doesn't seem to want to act...The King decided not to pursue any further for national stability. But he had already score enough political points over the Duke.

the last scene is with the Marquise de Pompadour ... she doesn't think too highly of D'Orleans... Pompadour had her own agenda in saving France. Minister of Foreign Affairs Praslin was reporting to her. I am not sure whether he is the Duke's right hand man.
(Yeah she pronounced his name as Prasslan instead of Pralan!) end of ep...

Next week D'Eon will try out his sister's dress.

I do hope Shinsen won't take this series. Why? Maybe because they already some, sorry a lot, no plenty of other projects to finish.

Even though a lot of people consider them as the best group, they take IMO far too many series. They manage for the first 6 Eps to follow then it is over. Oh sorry for Blood+ they are up to date and still one to go.

So far no series should end quickly but they plan on taking new one.

I really want to thank lommm soooo much though, for his great summaries. I think I shall just admit my Japanese fails quite drastically (and it helps that the raw I watched somehow sounded muted even at max volume on everything... or maybe it's my ears :S)

But somehow I can't say anything interesting about things going on... It's just... okay, stuff happened. Then again this is 24 episodes, I guess there's a long way to go...

Interestingly, episode 7 and 8 will be scripted by Hiroaki Jinno who was (I think?) the main scriptwriter for Windy Tales and was recommended/praised by Oshii.

I am not aware of any translation, official or clandestine. So everything is in Japanese with occasional decorative French.

Well, I've finally managed to watch all 5 episodes of this most excellent and well put together series. I am pretty sure you all know how good it is, so I'll dispence with the praise and share a few thoughts I had regarding the series.

First of all, the thing that interested me is how they are working around historical events, while never trying to break continuity.

As far as I understand, this is what they are doing...

In Real History, Charles de Beaumont went to Russia on the assignment from Le Secret du Roi under the fake identity of Lia de Beaumont, disguising himself as a girl and learning quite a few things by being in the Empress Elizabeth's favour.

In "Chevalier d'Eon" continuity, Lia de Beaumont is a real person who was sent to Russia on a mission from Le Secret du Roi, etc. etc. Charles is her younger brother who is now working for the same agency and is investigating her sister's death and following the trail of the papers that Lia brought from Russia.

Clever, if I am indeed following it correctly.

Would I be also correct to say that NQM is the code name from Le Secret du Roi and Hommes Optare is the code name for the Rosicrusian masonic order? Saint-Germain, if you pay attention, was wearing a ring with the pyramid and eye (I'm sure you've seen it on the U.S. Dollar banknotes), which is a masonic symbol.

And man, I am still laughing as Beaumarchais. THE Beaumarchais being an evil ninja flunky is amusing. Additionally, I like him a lot as a villain. A lot more than Saint-Germain or Louis-Philippe, who are a bit more generic so far. Beaumarchais is quite lively for a lackey, so I hope he isn't completely gone.

The one thing I don't like about this series is that they are relying to much on Lia to save Charles every time he is in mortal danger. This gets somewhat predictable after these 5 episodes.

The one thing I do like about this series is that they are using a continous storytelling mode, instead of an episodic style. I've been in love with this continous style ever since Escaflowne, so every series that tries to make the story flow naturally from episode to episode deserves quite a few warm words from me. Assuming that they are doing it right, and Production I.G seems to have a fairly good grip on matters.

And, by the way, this might be a coincidence, but Voronzoff... or rather Vorontsov (which is a correct spelling) is a name of a very famous Russian noble family. I am not sure, though, if our man is one of those Vorontsovs.

Voronzoff is old fashion spelling of Vorontsov.

ep06 look cool: it has a large ball! lots of dresses and tons of dancers! there are so many "extras" on this show!

Wow. Episode 6 was great. I don't know if everyone else feels this way but the production was great and the direction was solid. This time even I felt engaged and followed through with interest (zmog, I'm rewatching the show and looking up the terms!). I think it was a great example of using a good animation budget *effectively* - of using acting to bring the show across.

Personally I think that last scene with Anna and D'Eon is one of the best

I have seen in TV anime. I admit to feeling a lump in my throat... god, I could just watch it again and again. The voice acting was great, too!

looks like the scene will shift towards Russia... And yes, D'Eon wore a dress - Lia's old dress? and put on make up so that Marie could access Lia using him as a medium. She was going to say the name of a traitor but somehow it proved too much. Loved the animation here as well - the bit where she was moving her eyes about, especially.

Also he kissed Lia before he left. He was reading a letter before her coffin and burned it, and when he opened the thing to look inside I was like "naah... a kiss is so out of the question..." and then O_o;;; Isn't it gross kissing ... dead bodies? Erh... Well it was still a good scene, I guess....

But it looks like Durand used to be in love with Lia. I can imagine he would be quite affected that D'Eon changes into Lia.

Other parts I liked were when Telliagory was visiting the grave (not the close-up shots), and the dance at teh beginning. And that talking skull is really cool and scary at the same time. How much does it know?

Although I was quite disappointed with the dance music in the beginning...

OK, now everyone can go back to talking about the important stuff...

very good ep... i see what you mean about the mmusic at the ball, wao... while it was the traditional music, it sounded canned... nonetheless... i have a feeling the action will be way ramped up after this... it's like the calm before the storm.... great seance scene... the queen didn't just put the dress on him, she made him up and did his hair too... and the last scne when D'Eon forgets to give Anna the flower was great! i am sad to admit that i have done that very same thing before!
