Naru's pairings make sense and follow the pattern that's been established throughout the series. Each group consists of an exorcist and someone who (as far as we know) can't perform an exorcism or is likely to be possessed. (At this point, I'm assuming that Lin can perform exorcisms. Actually, I assume that Lin can do pretty much whatever he pleases. I suspect he's incredibly strong in terms of psychic power.)

Of course, if Naru wasn't being so convinced of his own capabilities, he would have taken either John or Monk-san as his exorcist protector. But then he wouldn't be Naru if he confessed to needing a protector.

The unequal distribution of male to female means that inevitably there will be a mixed grouping. Keeping the groups the same sex as much as possible reduces the awkwardness of such things as bathroom breaks and the like.

Except for the Lin and Mai grouping, the pairing also reflects the way the group has broken into subgroups in the past. I'm thinking specifically of when Monk-san and John were grouped in exorcising the classrooms and Ayako and Masako were grouped in searching out spirits in v4.

All in all, Naru's pairings make sense. Except for the Naru being alone bit. Which I chalk up to Naru being Naru.

Yes, young people is one of the two patterns. I am sorry I overlooked the discussion. Gender doesn't count, you are right on it again. Another pattern is a minor one, you better put into characters' shoes to find it.

As I have been watching the anime, a question has come to mind....

Monk-son teaches Mai how to excorize, So can anybody learn it? or can anybody with Prenatural power, or can only some who have powers do it?
Because in my mind if Mai can do it, why hasn't Naru learned or Masako? Or has Naru learned and he can't because of the whole "using his power hurts him" thing?

Hum..... many questions hopefully some answers out there?

I don't think that just anyone can learn how to conduct a successful exorcism. Otherwise, there would be exorcists all over the place, right? I think you must have some sort of prenatural powers to begin with. Furthermore, I suspect your ESP must be of the type that can conduct exorcisms.

I wish I could find evidence for this in the various manga discussions, but I don't have proof at this point.

Assuming that my theory is true, this begs the question "what makes Monk-san think that Mai could successfully perform an exorcism?" Did he teach the chant just to humor her request? If so, then why did he ask her why she didn't try the chant in the biology room? I don't have a good suggestion (let alone a good answer) for that.

I have a side-theory that a person can only perform an exorcism within one's religion. In other words, since Mai isn't Roman Catholic, she wouldn't be able to successfully perform an exorcist rite like John does. I thought there was a small side comment where Mai mentions to Monk-san what branch of Buddism she is. But I can't find it now. I may have made imagined it.

I would love to hear what others think on Starkle's because like I said, it's a darn good question.

OK here's my take but I agree with alot of what you posted

I agree with LKK saying that not just anyone can preform exocisims but I also think the reason Naru hasnt learned is cuz it doesnt concern him (if he wanted to learn). I went back and looked at vol 1 again to see if he makes any comments about but he doesnt. He obviously gives Ayako and Bou-san a hard time but he doesnt (and still doesnt) do that to John. I believe in Catholism you do need special consideration to be a priest and an exorcist, I dont think just anyone can do that. But since Bou-san taught Mai, buddism must be alittle different.

I dont think exorcism would interfer with Naru's PK but Lin does bring up a good point in vol 7 when he says to Naru "you cant perform an exorcism can you" and naru says "Ill get by" I think (as LKK said before) chalk it up to Naru being Naru. Makes you wonder what religion (if any) Naru is.

As for Masako, I have no clue. Also it appears that even thought Bou-san taught Mai she's still not really good at it so it probably does take a bit of practice.

Again I wish I had a better answer too.

I think they meant the chants for Mai to fend off troubling spirits for a little while until a proper psychic comes to her rescue.

I don't have the manga volumes with me, but I do remember that Mai has used Ayako's nine-character Shinto chant on top of Takigawa's Buddhist one. Don't remember if the former has been effective, though. In either vol 7 or 8, we see Takigawa's aghast reaction when he learns that Mai has directed Ayako's chant at a schoolmate (just to show said friend how an exorcism goes). By this time, he's learned about Mai's (albeit unstable) ESP and who knew if her mock exorcism could've harmed someone? I think he truly believes that Mai is able to use a Shinto chant to a certain degree of effectiveness, and it's proven that she's been able to fend off spirits successfully with a Buddhist chant, therefore I don't think religion matters. It only matters if you're attempting something that's... full-fledged in nature.

If anyone can do exorcism to a degree, why not Naru and Masako? Do they just not want to learn and therefore haven't asked to be taught? (Of course, by v6, we don't know for sure that they can't perform an exorcism. I'm just assuming that they can't because we haven't seen any hints of it by that point.)

I couldn't remember if Ayako's chant was Shinto or Buddist in origin. Since Mai is using chants from both religions, I guess religion doesn't matter all that much. It was just a side-theory of mine anyway. I still can't picture Mai doing a Roman Catholic exorcism though.
