Wow, and I just got it today, too. ...Could it be that we live in the same country? I'm dreading that this would be the last tankoubon for an indefinite period of time . My local publisher actually put down no 10 for a late February release. I'm thinking where the hell did they get their confidence from but keeping my hopes up all the same.

Okay, I take back my accusation of her being useless... But her required conditions wouldn't be fulfilled all the time. I feel sorry for the fact that there are so many restrictions to her powers.

On a less important note, I adored Mai and Masako's brief girl-to-girl moment. Masako is finally willing to permanently address Mai on a first name basis instead of going back and forth between that and Taniyama like before. She also expresses sympathy that they've both fallen for Naru instead of the other, nicer guys. Don't you love it when girls get along?

And referring back to some earlier discussions about the possibility of Naru using ESP to prevent falling on top of a rubble and bending the spoon... well, you guys were right ^^. To answer Manju Bun's question as to why a powerful being like Naru would let himself be possessed, it seems you guys were right again that Naru is forbidden to use his power. Not that often anyway. With this, I can now categorise Naru under Exorcist. On that subject, Lin is proof that a medium can also be an exorcist so I can now withdraw my silly theory...

Edit: Herbert, wait until I finish the last 10 pages... and then I can comment about Naru's disclosed ESP under a sub-spoiler tag.

Definitely I'm happy with it, somehow I'm a yuri fan. Leaving Naru alone, I say, have something more than friendship between girls.

I don't know if the people themselves are significant besides their number. They're supposed to represent five people accused to be causing the great famine that was occurring in that area, and whose heads got lopped off by locals hoping to stop the famine... Anyway, this is all folklore. Unfortunately, you have to read Yasuhara's lengthy explanation in order to fully understand the reference.

I can't promise 100% accuracy since this would be Japanese > some other language > English, but as long as you get the gist, right?

LKK, my GH manga is in Indonesian. I like that they've hired a pretty determined translator this time around: GH's relentless amount of jargon and subtle cultural references don't get lost in translation and are explained in full to the readers through footnotes (lots of footnotes!). I've never read DelRey's version, but knowing DelRey, I guess you're also treated with pages and pages of appendices Ah, to be inundated with information we'll hardly ever use in real life...

I reread vol. 3. ESP is different from PK. Naru is a PKer not an ESPer, at least I didnt find anything implies it. Being PKer doesn't make Naru an exorcist. He is really powerful at influence physical objects, but he can't perform exorcism. It is why he can be possessed.

I had forgotten that there are two types and they do different things. Sometimes I just think that if you have power you can do anything . So that would explain why Naru doesn't do any exorcisms. We were disscussion this earlier in the thread and couldn't come do a conclusive point. Is that why Monk-San thought that Mai could do an exorcism?

I agree with you that ESP and PK are considered separate powers. However, Naru has both PK and ESP powers. In addition to PK, Naru has psychometry -- the ability to read things from the past or in the future. The clues are in volume 2 and volume 4 where he taps the students' desks and then asks strange, out of the blue, questions like in v4 "has anyone done anything unusual like a summoning?". The truth about Naru's psychometry is revealed in the hypothetical v10 - v11 story arc where all of the secrets concerning Naru come to light.

However, having ESP-psychometry still does not make Naru an exorcist, I agree with you on that point. To be honest, I'm not sure what qualifies a person as an exorcist besides the training. I still believe that there must be some underlying fundamental paranormal power involved in addition to training. If there weren't, then exorcists wouldn't be such a rare profession. But so far, I haven't heard of the GH series stating what the underlying paranormal power behind exorcisms is.

I was basing my assumption on what John (or Takigawa, it's unclear who's speaking) says after Naru does away with the Strange Little Statue (aka. Okobu-sama): Monk-san was thinking... "If you [Naru] can jorei, I wish you'd have done so from the beginning." My version of the manga uses the word "jorei" in place of "exorcism" maybe because there's no exact word for that in Indonesian. But Takigawa may mean it in general terms so I may still be wrong.

Not to disrupt this conversation at all since everyone has good points on this but since we're all discussing vol 9 at the moment I want to bring up something that I thought I had orginally posted here but turns out it was just pming with LKK so Ill ask again...this ties into vol 3 and the nameplate

Ok we all know in vol 3 when Naru is in the hospital will all see that there is no nameplate on the door. When I first saw vol 9 when Naru is in the hospital...again...I noticed that under the number on his door there were kanji marks, since I dont read Japanese I went to the front of the manga where they do character intros and match the 2 kanji marks to his name, well the Shibuya aspect of it. So why does Naru have his name on this hospital door?
I went back in this thread to a post Cilia had about why his name isnt on the door in vol 3 and she made a comment about hospital records would probably have his real name. That got me thinking...we all know that PK isnt good for Naru so this could have happened before and Im betting has so he would be on record..somewhere...but then why does his door say Shibuya in vol9?

I think Monk-san says "除霊" which means removal of spirits. So, in most cases, "jorei" and "exorcism" can be considered as synonyms. But this time is an exception. they are trying to break Ebisu, the wooden statue, which is a physical being not spiritual entity. Being exorcists is not necessary to this task.

You may reread that scene. Even Yusahara, who is not a psychic, gives it a try.

All of the chapters had been compiled into v9. In other words, there have not been any new manga chapters since the release of v9 in Japan.

I doubt anyone would've used the word "jorei" to explain Yasuhara's action, but I agree with you that any one of them could've done away with the Ebisu using physical strength provided they get past its defense. Naru doesn't even utter a chant of some sort so it must be PK... Unless there's a branch of exorcism that doesn't base itself on a religion? Ok, ok, let's put it to rest

All in all, character progressions in this arc aside, the suspense build-up of it falls short to the relatively brilliant pace of the previous arc, maybe thanks to the absence of Naru's quick wit. The others feel around picking up little clues until a bulk of information comes in the form of Yasuhara's research, however I'm not complaining because a Naru-less story makes for a different and interesting setting. Anyway, I appreciate learning that the team can stand on their own feet and eventually arrives at the same conclusion as Naru, except of course with much less effort on his part.

White Manju Bun, my shred of speculation sounds half-baked. I wish I had something else to offer...

I don't know about Japanese hospitals' administration system, but if vol 3 marks Naru's first time being hospitalised in Japan then for his second time in vol 9 I suspect SPR's intervention or a false ID. I don't want to say Naru was underprepared the first time because failure is so unlike him - to quote Lin (paraphrased): Naru's self-confidence is such that he's unable to make mistakes and may die of irritation at his own failures (he's convincing Mai that meagre things like a mortal injury won't kill the tsundere but injury to his pride would, awww).

Well it depends on where you live. In the US it wont be out for a while but many of us have the chinese sub copy (which I cant read). I think Rune is reading Indonesian so again its all based on where you live or what language you read atm. ~wishes she read Japanese or Chinese~

Um... I think that quote is herbert's, not mine ^^". Anyway, as Manju Bun said, and to add to that.... If you normally read DelRey's version, are desperate for vols 7+ and would be happy with just pretty pictures, I'd say go for the Chinese or Japanese release; whichever one is readily accessible to you. I personally don't like exposing myself to images prior to the translated text as it takes away from my reading experience. The only time I've done that was with X, but that was a special case...

That's exactly what I have in mind. Since Naru is such a perfectionist, I don't imagine the blunder in vol 3 to be a case of SPR being underprepared for such a likely scenario. Or it could be Naru being his overconfident self again. That just shows he's learned his lesson
