I wonder if it's going to have an alternate storyline and ending for the same characters. That way if say Hiromi wins in the anime and Noe in the manga you would have a happy ending for fans of either camp.

Or is it a totally different story and cast of characters?

To my knowledge its based on the game, so it has a different story and characters. I'll see if I can get my hands on the manga...

A bit late, but that is indeed the case. The girl on the cover of the manga is Rui Nakane... talk about a different artstyle! So yes, since it's based on the original true tears game, it's completely unlike the anime in terms of characters and story.
