The USA used tons of agent orange in Vietnam, and next day nothing happened.
Then USA-ally used chemical agents against the kurds, and next day nothing happened.
Tomorrow Assad will use chemical agents on his own people (labeled "The rebels", as if chemicals agents could discriminate according to ideology) and the day after that it will be business as usual.

Hopefully even Assad isn't stupid/crazy enough to authorize a chemical attack. There'd be no recourse, China/Russia might even do something, they can't risk being associated with him now.

China/Russia would know that the world won't stand against them because they know the world had invested too much money in them.

On the other hand, drop a few French journalists with no sense of danger in, and they will have an excuse to send the FFL in. It would be interesting to see a Legionnaire knock on Assad's palace door and demanding the journalists back - Hollande would probably reply "They aren't French so it is not our fault" when the whole place, along with its inhabitants are turned inside out.

The ''they aren't French'' probably won't work; unless I am mistaken the officers of the Foreing Legion are french and the Foreing Legion is pretty much a integral part of the French Army.

Indeed, the FFL is actually an elite arm of the French Army, there "not French" argument would work about as well as SH's self control in a room full of lolis.

Actually, what I was referring to is their nationality. Assad would have problem demonising "French Imperialists" when they aren't exactly French; Syria used to be part of the French colony if I am not wrong.

@kyp - Of course I can't control myself to take care of them. It is the elder brother instinct after all.

Report: French military advisers meet with rebels inside Syria:

"Le Figaro newspaper reports that French agents held face-to-face talks with
a Free Syrian Army leader; UN's Ban: No confirmation Assad planning to use
chemical weapons, but this would be 'outrageous crime.'"

Watch Syrian Rebels Make Rockets Out of Assad’s Cluster Bombs:

"When Bashar Assad attacks his own people with cluster munitions,
enterprising Syrian rebels don’t just run for cover. They harvest unexploded
cluster bombs for parts they can use in homemade rockets to turn back on
regime forces. Do not try this at home."

NATO moves toward deployment on Syria border:

"As fears grow in the West that Syrian President Bashar Assad will unleash
chemical weapons as an act of desperation, NATO moved forward Thursday
with its plan to place Patriot missiles and troops along Syria's border with
Turkey to protect against potential attacks."

weapons against his opponents, the Kremlin appears to be recalibrating its
support for a desperate ally."

Wider Chaos Feared as Syrian Rebels Clash With Kurds:

"The Kurdish militias in northern Syria had hoped to stay out of the civil war
raging in Syria. They were focused on preparing to secure an autonomous
enclave for themselves within Syria should the rebels succeed in toppling the
government. But slowly, inexorably, they have been dragged into the fighting
and now have one goal in mind, their autonomy, which also means the
Balkanization of the state."

Obama Says U.S. Will Recognize Syrian Rebels
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/12/us...an-rebels.html
Quote:
The announcement puts Washington’s political imprimatur on a once-disparate band of opposition groups, which have coalesced, under pressure from the United States and its allies, to develop what American officials say is a credible transitional plan to govern Syria if Mr. Assad is forced out.

Moreover, it draws an even sharper line between those elements of the opposition that the United States champions and those it rejects. The Obama administration coupled its recognition with the designation hours earlier of a militant Syrian rebel group, Al Nusra Front, as a foreign terrorist organization, affiliated with Al Qaeda.

“Not everybody who is participating on the ground in fighting Assad are people that we are comfortable with,” Mr. Obama said in an interview on the ABC program “20/20.” “There are some who I think have adopted an extremist agenda, an anti-U.S. agenda.”

Syria Fires Scud Missiles, Burning Bombs and Even Sea Mines at Rebels:

"The Syrian regime isn’t using its chemical arsenal on its opposition, at least not
yet. But it’s starting to look like Bashar Assad is throwing everything else he has
against the rebels, from Scud missiles to incendiary weapons. He’s even chucking
naval mines onto dry land to attack his foes."

Who is fighting whom in Syria

Quote:
United Nations human rights investigators said in a new report that the Syria crisis had evolved from a battle to oust Mr. Assad into more of a sectarian conflict, pitting entire communities against one another and pulling in fighters from the Middle East and North Africa.

As the conflict approaches the end of its second year, it “has become overtly sectarian in nature,” said the report by a panel of the Human Rights Council.

The panel, led by Paulo Pinheiro, a human rights investigator from Brazil, said attacks and reprisals had led communities to arm themselves and to be armed by different parties to the conflict. “Entire communities are at risk of being forced out of the country or killed inside the country,” the panel wrote.

“Feeling threatened and under attack, ethnic and religious minority groups have increasingly aligned themselves with parties to the conflict, deepening sectarian divides,” the panel said.

The sharpest split is between the ruling minority Alawite sect, a Shiite Muslim offshoot from which Mr. Assad’s most senior political and military associates are drawn, and the country’s Sunni Muslim majority, mostly aligned with the opposition, the panel noted. But it said the conflict had drawn in other minorities, including Armenians, Christians, Druse, Palestinians, Kurds and Turkmens.

Most foreign fighters joining the conflict are Sunni Muslims from Middle Eastern and North African countries, many of them linked to extremist groups, the panel said, and often operating independently of the opposition Free Syrian Army but coordinating attacks with its forces.

Lebanon’s Shiite group Hezbollah confirmed that its members were fighting for the Assad government, the panel said, and it was investigating reports that Iraqi Shiites had also entered Syria. Iran has also confirmed that members of its Revolutionary Guards Corps are providing the Assad government with “intellectual and advisory support.”

Making their fourth submission to the Human Rights Council, the panel of four investigators said that government forces and supporting militias had attacked Sunni civilians and that opposition forces had attacked Alawite and other pro-government communities. It said that Kurdish groups had clashed with government and antigovernment forces, that Turkmen militias were fighting with antigovernment forces, and that Palestinians, increasingly split in their views of the Assad government, were being armed by both pro- and antigovernment forces.

^ Yeah, I touched on this briefly a couple of posts ago. In this war, fundamentalists and "terrorist" groups are fighting on both sides of this conflict. If I were the U.S. and/or West, I would hope this conflict would continue for a long time ..

The West is jealous that all their arms contracts are run by Russia and China.

Well this is late but :

Putin touts record Russian arms sales of $14 billion in 2012

Quote:
(Reuters) - Russian arms exports reached a record $14 billion this year, President Vladimir Putin said on Monday, extending a run of record-breaking sales in recent years that have included deliveries to Syria despite the civil war raging there.

The world no. 2 arms exporter has cultivated new weapons clients in Southeast Asia and Africa, despite criticism that it is failing to deliver the technological benefits of Western suppliers or the low costs of emerging weapons exporter China.

"Let's talk about our results - they are positive. We are reaching a record level of weapons exports. Their total volume was above $14 billion," Putin said in a televised meeting with officials.

He said Russia had signed over $15 billion in new export contracts this year alone. He did not spell out when deliveries on those deals were expected.

Russia has faced Western criticism over its weapons sales to the Syrian government, worth nearly $1 billion in 2011.

Moscow says its arms deliveries to Syria, a longtime ally, do not violate international law and are not intended to help President Bashar al-Assad's government fight a 21-month-old uprising, but rather to fulfill Soviet-era commitments.

Russia has made clear it would use its U.N. Security Council Vote to veto an arms embargo against Damascus, contending such a move would be one-sided when rebels are able to obtain weapons via smuggling into territory they now control.

Moscow has reported no major arms deals with Syria this year. A major order of fighter jets was not completed, although it remains unclear as to why. Putin gave no specifics on Russia's main weapons buyers.

Top weapons clients also include Soviet-era client and regional Asian heavyweight India, as well as Vietnam and other Southeast Asian nations wary of China's growing military might.

Putin said a major part of Russia's weapons business includes upgrades and refurbishment of Soviet-era technology and hardware. "We understand that competition in this sector of the international economy is very high and very serious," he said.

Exports from the world's top producer, the United States, have hovered around $30 billion annually in recent years.

State arms exporter Rosoboronexport accounts for around 80 percent of all Russian arms sales in a given year and nearly 20 independent firms comprise the rest with sales of spare parts and upgrades.
The Top 20 Arms Exporters, 2007–2011

Knock yourself out with the trade registers. Where there is war, there is money to be made - you gotta love how hellbent on destruction people are when they pay more to buy weapons (or to invest in for foreign sales) than they use to deal with the shortfalls of their society.

"It is only since the Arab Spring that we can clearly see how fragile these
authoritarian regimes are. Underneath the facade they are rotten to the core. The
WMDs and big armies gave their strongmen a false sense of security which obviated
the incentive for internal reform. Khadaffy and now Assad are learning that while
such weapons may protect you against foreign enemies they are useless against
internal rebellion. In fact they may act something like the eggs laid by an ichneumon
wasp in a host. When they hatch, they kill you. WMDs can eat out a rotten regime
from within. They incubate power centers, ambitious ‘mad majors’ or invite an
invasion of jihadis (as is the case with Syria) who desire to possess them."

See:

http://pjmedia.com/richardfernandez/...nuclear-age-2/

Considering Saddam used WMD's to quell an internal rebellion, I wonder how
true this is.
