They, they really aren't holding back at all... please keep yen press out of this one...Anyway, I wonder how many volumes they will adapt. 5 in a cour would be too rushed but may not be sufficient for two and volume 6 is a weird stopping point.

Welp, it started exactly what I had thought would be like with the:
Spoiler:
Action was probably the most noticeable part of the first episode though. The music was okay but so far pretty generic in terms of content. Two of the main girls were also introduced. OP song:

That was pretty solid. The pacing was fine and got a feel for the main characters we got to see. The lead seems like a pretty balanced person and his reactions weren't too over the top considering the situations. Heck somewhat impressed to see some rationality before things turned into a fight. Actually having a pause for Julis to finish getting dressed, thank him for returning the handkerchief...and then losing her cool . At least it went in a reasonable order.
Starting off with presumably the death of his sister in some underground fight was good as well. Could see that she made a great effort, but was just unable to match up. I suppose she might still be alive, but for now I'd guess the focus will be finding that guy. Or at least having the MC figure out what exactly happened to his sister. Ending it with him being pulled in by the pure drive of Julis works ok. Not a bad start really.

Oh look! another harem battle!
Didn't like it at all, so predictable and cliché from the very first scene "a guy walking into then suddenly a girl is half-naked". The action looks really cheap compared to the rest of the animation but at least OP and ED were really good. |

so since i've read the first couples, right off the bat i'm gonna say the adaptation rate is pretty good! the VA's were for the most part perfect matches for their respective characters.
so without going into ln territory, my thoughts on the characters is that ayato is very straight forward, and pretty skilled for a new student. julis is definitely a tsundure lol, but surprisingly not annoying and at times very cute about it. claudia sure is an eccentric one. her talk to ayato gives a dark kind of vibe, almost mild yandere even lol. yabuki is your typical creeper with all the info, but a likeable creeper none the less. mo-lester actually looks like he can pass for a student here where as in the manga he looked like he was 25 lmao. animation wise, that budget is amazing! the sound effects of the weapons, the visuals & the awesome ost were noticeable immediately. overall impression, gakusen is off to a great start! |

I'm not going to lie, but I always get this and that cavalry anime mixed up. Both LN adaptations with sword fighting as its premise, with a red-haired princess heroine, within a high school setting where multiple schools vying for supremacy in a 'festival'. Like c'mon, what are the odds of both airing in the same cour?
In any case, this episode was kinda face palm. Like gee, another anime where the MC walks in on girls in a half-naked state in the get-go, with some sort of mock battle resulting from it, and that being the cause of the initial MC/Heroine conflict. It isn't as bad as Sky Wizards episode 1 last cour, as at least this was animated decently, but man these fantasy battle action adaptations are pretty much written the same way. So nothing really that sets this apart especially with the cavalry this cour, unfortunately. What it is doing though is baiting me into thinking either the princess or the student council president is a forgotten childhood friend. Like what are the odds of the MC be the one who gave the princess that hankie, or that the SCP knew him before middle school. Then I think more about it, but the princess was born in another country, while SCP said "I have finally met you" meaning that might have been their first meeting and she knew him through other more distant means? So a bit dismayed, but hey, I'll stick around just in case as Chloe last cour was a pleasant surprise.

Not bad first ep. I easily like this kind of show anyway.
Of course, we have seen this knid of story many times before but what really important is where the story will go to in the following ep. - That is how the real difference between each shows will be showed.
