Could be that you're right. I never really thought about it either, until I started reading all those theories people have made of the series in general... Speculation on the whole John Smith issue came up quite a few times. It could be that I'm just overestimating the meaning of the name here too... I don't know. That's probably one reason why SHnY is so great in general. You can never quite know, with rather many things.

Oh, but that aside, when it comes to the whole maid/butler/insert other costume here topic, I'd say that I'd prefer to see Mitsuuru doing it. No, the thought is not something that pleases my fangirl senses especially much, but I just can't see Kyonko actually agreeing to wear that, unless she is forced. And if she is forced, I can't see her actually staying with the Brigade.

Then again, Itsuko could do it too. After all, we know for sure she wouldn't exactly refuse. However, I'd rather to stay closer to the original, but that's just my own "preference", I could say.

Conversion? Well, in the case of original composition of action, I use poser figurine in order to get the body proportions in the rough, then, in the case of trying to doctor images, study body profile and get an idea about how the character designer went about with the characters. I find the eyes to be the most challenging (especially with approximation of eye focus and relative proportion depending on angle of face pitch,yaw and tilt) , with face not far behind and that one screw-up with those and you'd be screaming about how much QUALITY your work turns out to be.

I cannot draw character by pen and paper lineart for some reason... they end up as horrible abomination and that I do not make clean lines regarding characters. Surprisingly the idea of inflexion points, maxima/minima and Bezier curve I picked up in drafting actually gave me the possibility of what I cannot do on paper...

@ivari: You would've tossed out the subtle inferences regarding the choice of the name 'John Smith', as an indirect echo to John Smith of Jamestown. What to replace with might be something that needs to be pondered on, since on pure basis of 'element of dispute regarding exaggeration of facts over the literary character that the namesake comes from', I would think of Mary Magdaline, but the meaning intended by Tanegawa then might be maligned from that choice.

about the name thing...
i think kyon in the original series use the name john smith because it sounds like a very common name therefore it sounds like a very uncommon one...
and i think japanese in general (viewing from haruhi's pov...) don't really know the difference about it...
so kyon who want to make fun of haruhi just give her names...
so, the main point is it doesn't really matter what name kyonko tell to haruki...
but should i choose, i would go with jane smith. because it resembles the female counterpart of "john smith" well

and can i post everybody's story and pictures in my other forum/site?

In the UK, we call unidentified bodies, if male, as "John Smith" or if female as "Jane Smith" a bit like the Americans call theirs "John Doe" (sorry i don't really know what they call female bodies).

I think it'll be entirely logical to call Kyon(ko) as "Jane Smith" in this case.

I haven't read much of the various theories concerning that name, but I think it's just the image of generic - in history, when wanting to remain anonymous English people generally would take the name of John Smith or John Doe, and such - sorta like the Mary Sue/Marty Stu thing - thus I think something equally generic yet female would do for Kyon-ko, such as Jane Smith.

On the other hand though, I think that "John Smith" has a certain ring to it, and something within me says that since it's English, it could be used by Kyon-ko as well. After all, the first thing Haruhi says is something along the lines of, "That's not your name" - since it's pretty obvious - and so I think it could work to have Kyon-ko use that same name as well.

As said earlier I went with Mitsuuru only, since that was the easiest way of doing things. I was also thinking of including Itsuko, but it'd be a bit hard to facilitate that, at least for me.

Anyway! Here's my contribution to the party; the Maid Costume Raep scene from chapter three. And I am now officially gay for Mitsuuru - that's what I get for putting myself into the POV. ^v^;

Spoiler for Chapter 3, part 2 - Costume Raep scene:

The following day after school.

As I was on duty that day, I arrived at the club room later than usual, and the first thing I saw was Haruki toying around with Asahina-senpai.

"Hold still! Damn it! Be a good boy and don't move!"

"N... nooo! H... help~~"

Haruki had nearly stripped a struggling Asahina-senpai of his uniform.

"KYAA!!!"

Asahina-senpai screamed when he saw me. Truth be told, I was also quite stunned for a moment there, which was the only reason I didn't instantly cover my eyes to protect my sanity.

Haruki, on the other hand, just raised his head and directed his mischievous smile at me, while Asahina-senpai, to no avail, tried to get out of Haruki's bear hug. “You're late, Kyon-chan! Can you help me out here for a bit? This guy may be tiny, but he's still-”
Before he completed his sentence, though, I slammed the door shut, finally having regained my senses.

After waiting outside the door for ten minutes, the duet of Asahina-senpai's pitiful-yet-cute moans and Haruki's mischievous snickering came to an end. A few seconds later, the door slammed open, with Haruki's face popping out like some twisted variant of a Jack-in-the-box.

"What are you waiting for, dumbass?"

Unfortunately I was standing quite close to the door, and thus well within Haruki's reach. He grabbed my arm and dragged me into the room, closing it behind him. Just as I was about to sling him an angry outburst for being so damnedly forceful, I happened to take in the sight of the room around me, stopping me in astonishment.

There greeting me inside was the sight of a beautiful maid.

Dressed in a maid costume, Asahina-senpai sat on the steel chair with tears in his eyes. After sadly looking at me, he lowered his head.

A white apron coupled with a wavy skirt, a blouse, and white stockings only served to make him more adorable. Silently I started to envy his legs, and it didn't at all look like there was a guy in that costume – in fact, the lacy headband and the large butterfly-knot increased his female charm to dangerously high levels.

Such an impeccable maid!

"Well? Isn't he cute?"

Haruki said as if praising his own crazy handiwork, while caressing Asahina-senpai's hair.

I wholeheartedly agree. No offense to poor Asahina-senpai, but he really does look cute in that – despite the fact that he's actually a guy. Well, at least biologically – after this, though, I'm not really sure how he'll be doing on the inside.

"This costume's great, isn't it?"

"No, it isn't!" Asahina-senpai protested softly, yet I pretended I didn't hear her and turned to Haruki.

"Why are you dressing her up as a maid?"

"Because maid costumes are sexy!"

Stop giving such ambiguous answers!

"It took me a long time to think of this, you know?"

Even if you didn't think at all, it wouldn't make much of a difference.

"Listen, Kyon-chan. It is entirely obvious to anyone who sees this guy that he lacks any sort of manly spirit. This is entirely unacceptable! With his body, he should be the epitome of manliness – a god, even! The only thing he needs is a bit of training for his soul; something to turn him from this...” he pointed at Asahina-senpai with one hand, “...to THIS!” With his other hand, he turned the computer's monitor around, so that I could see it clearly. It was showing the front page of some online magazine, featuring some muscly guy with a half-opened shirt, whose hairdo vaguely resembled Asahina-senpai's. I felt a slight urge to lick my lips, but I managed to resist it until Haruki turned the monitor around again and went on with his speech. “On the other hand, if he doesn't, he'll be abused to the end of eternity by folks like those Computer Study Group people, toyed around with by friends, bullied by underclassmen and I don't know what! It's for his own good!”

Do you realize that your current actions fit perfectly into all those three categories? And why do I get the feeling that you're not caring the least about Asahina-senpai, but just doing this for your own twisted enjoyment?

As I was thinking of how to respond, Haruki took out a digital camera out of nowhere and started taking souvenir shots.

Asahina-senpai blushed bright red and shook his head violently.

"P... please stop shooting!!!"

Asahina-senpai, you're wasting your time begging for mercy from Haruki, even if you bow and kneel, because he's the sort who will carry on doing what he's thought out, no matter what.

As expected, Haruki had Asahina-senpai perform all sorts of poses for his photo session.

"Sniff..."

"Now look over here! Lower your chin a bit! Lift up your apron! Yes, that's a good boy! Smile a bit more!"

Haruki ceaselessly gave out his orders to Asahina-senpai while simultaneously pressing down on the camera shutter. If I had asked him where he got this digital camera from, he'd definitely say he had it "obtained" somewhere. More like stolen, I guess.

Amidst Haruki's photo shooting frenzy, Nagato Yuuki sat in his seat reading as always. Despite his confusing conversation with me last night, seeing his usual coolness I breathed a sigh of relief.

"Kyon, your turn to shoot."

Haruki handed the camera to me and turned towards Asahina-senpai. Then, like an eagle searching for prey, he let his gaze wander over Asahina-senpai's body, until he finally nodded briefly, closing his arms around Asahina-senpai's shoulders.

"Ah..."

Haruki smiled to a shrugging Asahina-senpai.

”Mitsuuru, until you've become manly enough, I'll have you look as cute as possible! Got that?”

That said, Haruki proceeded to loosen Asahina-senpai's ribbon, then quickly unbuttoned three buttons on his blouse. Parts of Asahina-senpai's smooth, hairless chest was revealed – he looked very much like a very flat-chested girl right now.

"W-wait! No... what are you doing...!?"

"Don't worry, it doesn't really matter, does it?"

Of course it matters, you idiot!

In the end, Asahina-senpai was forced to place his hands on his chest and lean a bit backwards. Faced with the image of this innocent boy turned flat-chested maid, I felt my face redden, and turned my head away, clinching my eyes together, as if trying to un-see the whole thing. But I wouldn't have been able to take any pictures that way, so faced with no choice, I turned my eyes back to the camera and pressed the shutter repeatedly as Haruki had ordered.

Poor Asahina-senpai was made to perform poses which further emphasized his innocent bodily features, and he was so embarrassed his face got even redder. Yet, even as he was about to cry, he still tried his clumsiest best to smile, giving out a girlish charm as never seen before.

I felt something wet inside my nose. Damn it, am I becoming like one of those Computer Club girls?

"Yuuki, lend me your glasses for a bit!"

Nagato Yuuki slowly lifted his head, but not fast enough for Haruki, who took them straight off the dazed fellow's face with not as much as a “Thanks”. Really, that guy was pushy to no end! And can Yuuki even read without glasses?

Haruki wandered back with the glasses and placed them on Asahina-senpai's face.

"The glasses would look better if they're slightly tilted. There, that would be perfect! Kyon-chan, remember to take more pictures of the four-eyed, innocent maid boy!"

Putting aside the argument of whether to take the photos or not, just what do you intend to do with the photos of Asahina-senpai in a maid costume anyway?

"Mitsuuru, from now on you are to wear this costume every time you come for club activities!"

"Eeh!? What...no...that's...how can you..."

Asahina-senpai tried his best to express refusal, but Haruki trapped him once more in his bear-hug, letting his hands wander freely.

"Who asked you to be so cute? Man, like this even I'm unable to resist doing this to you now!"

Asahina-senpai screamed and tried to escape, but to no avail, being at the mercy of Haruki's molesting hands.

Damn, Haruki, I'm jealous of you. No, wait, no more of these damn thoughts! I'm supposed to be saving him!

"All right, I think it's time for you to stop now!"

I tried my best to pull Haruki away from his sexual harassment of Asahina-senpai, but he was way too big and strong for me to handle.

"That's enough, stop it already!"

"Does it matter? Why don't you join in as well?"

“EH!?” I exclaimed at this suggestion, while my mind started working in an unwanted direction again. Agh! Get a hold of yourself, me!

"Ah, what's going on here?"

Turning around, I saw Koizumi Itsuko standing at the entrance with her bag.

She looked amusedly first at Haruki, whose hands were fondling Asahina-senpai's butt; then at me, who was trying to stop Haruki's madness; then to Asahina-senpai in a maid costume, trembling nonstop; and finally to Nagato, who remained unfazed, peacefully reading his book even without his glasses.

"Is this some sort of club activity?"

"Koizumi, you came at just the right time! Let's play with Mitsuuru!"

What on earth are you talking about!?

Koizumi only smiled. Please, if you actually agree with Haruki's suggestions, then you've got some serious issues.

"No thanks, seems pretty scary to me."

Koizumi placed her bag on the table and unfolded one of the chairs by the wall.

"Mind if I just sit and watch?"

She sat with her legs crossed and looked at me as if she was watching a parade.

"Don't mind me. Please, continue."

No! You got it all wrong! I'm not trying to molest Asahina-senpai! I'm trying to save her!

Eventually, I was able to squeeze in an arm to bend up Haruki's bear hug around Asahina-senpai – and either Haruki must have let go of his own accord, or I suddenly had some boost of super strength, because Haruki is way too strong for me to handle, and frantically tried holding up Asahina-senpai to prevent him from falling to the ground. Either he was amazingly light, or I really had super strength, since I was able to hold him up for long enough to kick a nearby chair under him and put him down sideways. He was so exhausted he just collapsed backwards – with his head leaning against my chest! I panicked for a second before I frantically grabbed his shoulders and pushing him to an upright position. Asahina-senpai's maid costume was ragged and untidy, and he was obviously totally worn out, but honestly speaking, I was starting to feel really tired as well.

"Oh well, we've taken plenty of photos anyway."

Asahina-senpai let out a small moan when reminded of the pictures, and weakly collapsed forward, forcing me to pull him upwards to keep him from tumbling down on the floor. Haruki took off the glasses from his cute face and returned them to Nagato.

Nagato silently received the glasses, putting them back on without saying a word. It's as though his endless speech last night never happened. Had he been fooling with me last night? I couldn't tell, but I was very doubtful.

"Right, let's now begin the first SOS Brigade meeting!"

Haruki, who was standing on the commander's seat, suddenly shouted. Please stop shouting at random already, you're making my head hurt!

"Before this, we've already done a lot of work. Like distributing flyers and setting up the webpage, the SOS Brigade's reputation in the school has soared sky high, so I announce phase one of the work to be a great success."

How can making Asahina-senpai mentally scarred be called a success!?

"But our inbox has yet to receive a single email about any mysterious events, and no one has yet come to us to discuss their concerns with their experiences."

Reputation alone doesn't help a lot, since until now, not everyone knows what this club is all about. Besides, the school doesn't even recognize this club!

"There used to be a saying that 'patience is a virtue', but times have changed. Even if we have to turn the earth around, we'll find them on our own. So everyone, let's begin searching!"

"... What are we looking for?"

Since no one else asked, I decided to do it myself.

"To find out all the mysterious events of this world! As long as we try hard, we'll be able to find one or two events in this town!"

Your train of thought is a damn mystery in itself!

I displayed my reluctance, Koizumi only smiled enigmatically, Nagato remained wooden faced, while Asahina-senpai, held up only by my hands, was too exhausted to even answer. Ignoring everyone's reactions, Haruki waved his arms and yelled:

"This Saturday, which is tomorrow! We meet outside the north station before nine in the morning! Don't be late! Absentees will be executed!"

Sigh, not the death penalty again?


What did Haruki do with Asahina-senpai's maid costume photos? I'm sure most of you have guessed, the damn idiot intended to upload all of them onto the webpage so that they could attract people to the website for discussion.

When I discovered this, he had just finished uploading them all on the front page to welcome visitors. He was even typing in the personal details.

Do you know what you're doing!? This could alert a lot of people!

I tried my best to stop his foolish behavior and have all the images removed. If Asahina-senpai had known that images of him posing sexily in drag – and a maid costume, at that – had been spread all over the world, he'd probably faint on the spot, and I didn't want to be forced to carry him around like that again; my arms were hurting a lot.

I quickly warned him about the dangers of putting personal details on the web, and amazingly for once, Haruki actually paid attention and listened to me seriously. Eventually, as if to spite me, he said rather grumpily:

"I know that already!"

He then very reluctantly allowed me to remove the images from the page. At this moment, I should have been deleting all of Asahina-senpai's photos, but as I was about to click on the “Empty Waste Bin” option on the drop-down menu, an impulse of an unwanted side of myself kicked in and instead I secretly moved them all to a hidden folder on the computer's hard drive and had it protected with a password.

Only I can view those photos!

So there! Good thing I hadn't put all too much formatting into it since it went away anyways. Opinions and criticism wanted!

Thx, my head exploded with pleasure when i heard this. GOod job to everyone who's been a part of this movement.

And I'd like to ask what you guys were planning for the bent version of the boredom of suzumiya haruhi, i.e. the baseball game? What does everyone think of having kyonko being skilled in baseball? In the original Kyon displayed some knowledge when a player got a hit off of haruhi's pitch.
If u don't mind me throwing in my 1/50th of a dollar Maybe we could have as kyonko comes up to bat she crowds the plate and gets to walk to first base. And Haruki could be yelling at her to "swing the goddamn bat". And Kyonko could be like "STFU this is all i can do against a pitcher of this caliber."
Then again they were able to strike out kyon's sister in the original...so ionno...just throwing out there hope it helps.

1. Depends on the authors involved.

2. Depends on what consensus this collaboration of authors can come to, before it can be put on any wiki, or you will be looking at a very ugly "Edit War".

Finally she lifted her head and started talking in a slightly embarrassed tone. "The truth is, I'm not from this time and age. I am a person from the future. I can't tell you when I arrived from, or from which temporal plane. I wouldn't be able to anyway, even if I wanted to. Conveying any information regarding the future with any person from the past is strictly forbidden - and that's why - before using the time machine I had to go through stringent mental conditioning. If I intended to say anything that shouldn't be said, my memory concerning that information would be sealed."

Asahina-senpai took a deep breath and continued, "Unlike the water flowing in a river, every time frame is made up of different two-dimensional flat planes."

"You lost me from the beginning."

"Hmm, how about this, try to imagine it like a cartoon. When we're watching a cartoon we see the characters within move seamlessly but, in fact, they're all created from a series of still images. Similarly, time is like that, a digitized version. But if I use a series of still images as a description, maybe you'll understand better."

"Between one time frame and another there are so-called temporal fault lines. They do exist, even though the frequency of the fault lines is near zero; so, there is no continuity between different time frames. Time traveling is the attempt to make a three-dimensional movement between the two-dimensional temporal planes. For me who has arrived from the future to this temporal plane, it is like adding an extra object, drawn onto the still image. Even if I attempted to change history in this age it would not affect the future, because there is no continuity between the time frames. Everything would stay in this temporal plane. It's like trying to add a few words on a still image from hundreds of still images: the overall story wouldn't be affected, right?"

"Time is unlike this river here: every moment belongs to a digitized temporal plane. Are you following me now?"

I hesitated on whether to place my hand on my forehead, which I eventually did. Temporal plane, digitized. These terms don't matter to me, but, what's with the time traveling?

Asahina-senpai glanced at the toes on his sandals and continued, "Let me tell you the reason I've come to this temporal plane..."

A couple with a young child passed by us at that moment.

"Three years ago we detected the occurrence of a huge time-quake. Hmm, it should be around three years before today, just when Suzumiya-kun entered junior high. We were shocked when we traveled back to investigate, because we were unable to travel any further into the past."

How come it's three years ago again?

"We came to a conclusion that there exists a massive temporal fault line, but we don't know why it only appears at that specific time frame. It's only recently that we discovered the reason...sorry, I meant recently for the age that I came from."

"...And why is that?"

The culprit couldn't be him, could it?

"It's because of Suzumiya-kun."

Asahina-senpai said the words I didn't want to hear.

"He is located right at the center of the fourth dimension. Please don't ask me why, since it's forbidden, so I can't tell you. However, we're certain that it's Suzumiya-kun who has blocked the passage for traveling to the past."

"...I don't think Haruki is capable of such a thing..."

"Neither did I. Honestly, it's impossible for a normal human to interfere with the temporal planes. This is still an unsolved mystery, and Suzumiya-kun himself is unaware that he is the source of all the temporal distortions and time-quakes. I remember hearing the same things being said inside a dull, quiet apartment, albeit with me being a lot more cautious. Surely, Nagato wasn't very threatening, but his constant was still a bit creepy, and being a girl alone with him in his apartment didn't help much – while Asahina-senpai just had too much 'cute' about him to even consider him able to do anything bad. Plus, the mood was totally different.

Seeing the silent frown on my face, Asahina-senpai's eyes look depressingly red.

"I'm so sorry, for suddenly telling you all this."

First there's Nagato telling me he's a Living Humanoid Interface created by aliens, now there's Asahina-senpai claiming he's from the future. How am I supposed to believe all this? Somebody, help me!

When I placed my hand on the bench, I accidentally touched Asahina-senpai's hand. Even though I only brushed his slim fingers, Asahina-senpai retracted his hand as fast as lightning, and turned his head away.

We then silently stared at the river.

Time passed by.

"Asahina-senpai."

"Yes...?"

"Can I pretend this conversation never happened? Whether I believe you or not, let's put this aside for now."

"OK."

A smile came from Asahina-senpai's face. It was a very beautiful smile.

"As things go, this is the best solution. Please treat me as you have always done, I'm counting on you."

That said, Asahina-senpai bowed deeply to me, and I blushed slightly. Hey, there's no need to go so far!

"Can I ask you one thing?"

"What is it?"

"...Please tell me your real age."

"Classified information~"

Asahina smiled mischievously.
