Code Geass is really bombing in that slot.. how long till they push it back to a late night slot? Soul Eater late night slot is getting the same as its prime time slot. Will be interesting to see if Gundam 00 has a slump in ratings with the change of time slot for its second season. I said 2 pages back that the "Noitamina" block was immune to a ratings slump, Library War shows me that I was wrong! Hopefully a second season of Nodame can bring back the shoujo crowd to the time slot whenever that gets the green light because Library War definitely isn't.

Macross Frontier and Golgo 13 are airing against each other considerably late at night in the Kantou region of Japan. Despite that, both have been drawing pretty good TV ratings so far.

If television household audience ratings demographics for episode 2 are any indication...

It seems that hardly any children and teenagers watch Macross Frontier and Golgo 13 in the Kantou region. In Kantou, young men and maybe middle aged men apparently constitute the largest groups of TV viewers for Macross Frontier, while men aged 20-34 years apparently make up the largest group of TV viewers by far for Golgo 13, with the next largest group of TV viewers being men aged 35-49 years. Golgo 13 appears to have hardly any female TV viewers of any age in Kantou.

Teenagers (presumably, mainly teenage boys) and young men appear to be the primary TV viewers for To LOVE Ru -Trouble- in Kantou, with hardly any children - and not much more women - watching.

Children, followed by teenagers, on the other hand, apparently are the main TV viewers for SOUL EATER in Kantou during the evening.

Television schedules are probably negotiated too far in advance for there to be any change to be in the offing. Still, it's sort of shocking to see it drop like that. It really looks like Code Geass has found its niche, and that it's not going to grow beyond that.

I'm rather surprised that Soul Eater hasn't been doing better - it seemed to be a relatively mainstream title like that in an afternoon timeslot. But it looks like it still has a way to go before it establishes an audience.

Gundam 00, on the other hand, has already found its fanbase, so I doubt that a change in timeslot will make that much difference unless it's at late night, thus ruling out much of the kids demographic. Is there any information out on what the new slot is yet?

At around 3.0, Library War isn't doing great for Noitamina, but it's at least respectable. One of the reasons it's probably not doing as well as other recent Noitamina works is that it's not as quirky as the other ones have been, and so it has a slightly different demographic. So far, it's not particularly distinguished from any number of other shounen action shows out there.

As always, thank you for putting up all of this information. These are the two shows that are doing considerably better than I would have expected.

Seeing as how Code Geass only aired on late night in the Kantou region, I can't say I'm surprised. The Kansai ratings are better because Geass got a re-airing on Saturdays at 5:30pm on MBS. I am a bit surprised that it dropped from 5.2% to 3.8% in Kansai, but maybe that's just due to a large amount of rating fluctuation (GSD had that happen as well).

Also, I agree with what solomon said earlier in this topic that Code Geass is a show that leans more towards the otaku audience than other mainstream anime that air around Golden Time.

I won't be surprised if the ratings jump back to 4% average at the very least when Gundam 00 comes back for its second season.

Soul Eater is being broadcasted on TV Tokyo, which has the least amount of coverage out of all the major broadcasters in the Kantou region.

From what I've read, the most successful anime typically get broadcasted on Fuji TV, NTV, or TV Asahi. Those three stations have a much larger viewer base than TV Tokyo, and as such, get higher ratings. That's why you see One Piece beat Naruto and Bleach in the ratings all the time, even though One Piece is in the mornings and the other two air on primetime (it seems that Shippuden managed to overtake One Piece this one time, though).

I'm sure Soul Eater would have better ratings if it aired on another broadcaster, but the problem is that, nowadays, anime is unable to bring high enough ratings to logically put it on primetime. I believe the cut off point is 10% for anything on Golden Time, and even very popular anime, such as Doraemon and Detective Conan, struggle to hit that cut off rating of 10% now. This is why One Piece got moved from 7pm to 9:30am on Fuji, as the show was getting below 10% in ratings.

Back in the 90's, you would've seen Fuji TV airing quite a few anime, such as Rurouni Kenshin, Dragon Ball, Flame of Recca, Hunter X Hunter, etc. That was because anime was still able to bring in high ratings of 10-20%.

I get the feeling that you didn't see the newest ratings for Code Geass:
Quote:
*1.4% (*2.8%) 04/27 (Sun) *5:00pm-*5:30pm TBS Code Geass Hangyaku no Lelouch R2 [Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2]
I was referring to that 50% drop, and it isn't something that can be accounted for by the timeslot or anything like that. Other than a lack of audience interest, the only factor that I can think of to give us that result is if there was some sort of super-popular special opposite Code Geass that particular Sunday.

I'm not sure what you mean by Code Geass getting a late-night airing in Kantou. Is the time listed for TBS, 5:00-5:30, incorrect?

I'm not really expecting super-high 10.0 ratings or anything like that for Soul Eater. I just expected it to get up to the 3.5 - 4.0 range. 1.7, even with two showings, is quite a bit short of that expectation.

I believe he's talking about the fact that the first season of Code Geass didn't get a non-late night rerun in Kantou (where the R2 ratings have been lower, including the latest drop), while it did get one in Kansai (where they have been higher, although I'd like to see numbers for episodes 3 and 4). The implication is that a day time rerun (of the first season) generated a lot of extra interest in Kansai, but that the late night airing in Kantou didn't, explaining the difference we are now seeing with the sequel.

As for the Code Geass R2 ratings themselves...I'd be worried if the latest Kantou drop lasts more than an episode or two.

The 50% drop for episode 4 is huge, but also rather bizarre...maybe the fact that it aired close to the beginning of Golden Week was also a factor? If so, I'd be interested in what episode 6 gets, more than number 5.

Yeah, I didn't notice those ratings for Soul Eater and Code Geass R2. My apologies for that.

And Kusaja is correct in that I was referring to the first season of Code Geass when I mentioned Kantou and Kansai. But in any case, now that I actually looked at the ratings for the past week...

The only thing I can think of is that there was apparently some sports program airing on Fuji TV from 4:00-5:25pm on Sunday that week. I think it was Golf or something like that. Other than that, I wouldn't really know.

And Golden Week is this week, so I doubt it would've affected the airings of shows two weeks prior to this one.

I doubt that there's anything to worry about as long as the fans still buy up lots of merchandise - Code Geass is the kind of otaku show where the ratings aren't all that important to how much money it can generate.

If the Golden Week were to affect anime ratings, then we should see a large decrease among all shows that week, but none of them saw the kind of drop that Code Geass did, so I don't think that it's a very good explanation for what happened. It's possible that it's just a random fluctuation, but we'll see if that's the case in the next couple of weeks.

Looking at the ratings for all shows during the week, nothing stood out as a blockbuster that'd grab the ratings from Code Geass. Chibi Maruko-chan and Sazae-san aired around the same time, and their ratings didn't drop to any great degree.

im quite surprised that golgo 13 is faring well in the ratings war considering that the hype here in AS for golgo13 was relatively mild(and the posters are quite few).

Exactly, I'm not worried about that per se.

Maybe the latter is right, but yes...we'll see.

The speculation I've read says that it wasn't just because of the beginning of Golden Week per se, but in combination with that particular time slot (afternoon) and airing date (Sunday).

Meaning: other shows, with different time slots and at other dates, wouldn't need to be subjected to exactly the same effect, so the other data itself hardly confirms or dismisses anything at this point. Still, that's just speculation after all.

Why are women aged 35-49 years (***F2) often the largest group of adult viewers of anime in Japan?

Many mothers watch anime together with their children.

Children, teenagers, boys, girls, men, women, the young, the middle aged, the elderly, etc. - everyone in Japan watches Sazae-san, one television animation program broadcasted in all 47 prefectures of Japan. A show which the entire family can enjoy.

That is why Sazae-san is the highest rated animated television program regularly broadcasted in Japan. On rare occasion, it is the highest rated television program, period. This venerable Japanese cultural institution has been on the air since October 1969.

There are a lot of interesting if not surprising data, such as the TV viewer demographics for an episode of Shugo Chara!, which is based on a shoujo manga, versus an episode of Hayate no Gotoku!, which is based on a shounen manga. In the Kantou region for the episodes concerned, Shugo Chara! appears to have had significantly more young adult male viewers than Hayate no Gotoku!

And so on.

Seems like a lot of these ratings are pretty low for the amount of hype that the shows receive. Is anime just becoming less and less popular or do less and less people just watch TV now (and instead download or just buy DVDs instead)?

I remember Gundam SEED had ratings 6-7% while 00 has much lower ratings. Same with other shows. At 2.8% for an expensive to produce show like Frontier, it ties some really crappy shows from seasons past.

Frontier's ratings are low because of the timeslot it's in. There aren't going to be a lot of people that are going to stay up until 1:25am in Japan to watch Macross Frontier.

With the exception of NoitaminA and maybe an anime airing late night on NTV, late night anime won't get anything higher than 3% normally because of their timeslots. And that's acceptable because any anime that airs on a late night timeslot is just for advertisement of DVDs and other goods.

Anime hasn't been the ratings grabber that it used to be. To give you an idea, here are some ratings of shows that aired back in 2000:

Ojamajo Doremi (8:30am Sundays: Yes! PreCure 5 GoGo now airs in this slot)
1/9/2000: 6.1%

1/23: 10.6%
1/30: 11.8%
2/06: 11.6%
2/13: 11.9%
2/20: 13.3%
2/26: 13.0%

Chibi Maruko-chan (6:00pm Sundays: Maruko-chan still airs in this slot)
1/9/2000: 14.6%
1/16: 18.5%
1/23: 16.7%
1/30: 18.6%
2/06: 15.6%
2/13: 17.2%
2/20: 19.0%
2/27: 18.8%

Sazae-san (6:30pm Sundays: Sazae-san still airs in this slot)
1/9/2000: 22.1%
1/23: 23.6%
1/30: 25.2%
2/06: 24.5%
2/13: 25.0%
2/20: 28.1%
2/27: 25.7%

Detective Conan (7:30pm Mondays: Conan still airs in this slot)
1/3/2000: 14.6%
1/10: 18.0%
1/17: 22.0%
1/24: 18.8%
1/31: 19.5%
2/07: 20.1%
2/14: 20.1%
2/21: 20.1%
2/28: 21.0%

One Piece (7:00pm Wednesdays: no longer a timeslot for anime)
1/12/2000: 11.2%
1/19: 12.7%
1/26: 12.1%
2/02: 13.2%
2/09: 14.7%
2/16: 12.8%
2/23: 14.4%

Pokemon [Pocket Monsters] (7:00pm Thursdays: Pocket Monsters Diamond and Pearl now airs in this slot)
1/6/2000: 10.2%
1/13: 14.3%
1/20: 13.6%
1/27: 14.9%
2/03: 14.6%
2/10: 14.9%
2/17: 14.3%
2/24: 14.7%

Hunter X Hunter (6:30pm Saturdays: no longer a timeslot for anime)
1/08/2000: 8.0%
1/15: 9.0%
1/22: 7.2%
1/29: 8.6%
2/05: 10.4%
2/12: 8.5%
2/19: 8.3%
2/26: 9.4%

The ratings for shows right now are nothing compared to the ratings those shows got back in 2000. And if you go even farther back like the 90's, anime ratings were even higher. I think popular shonen shows like Yu Yu Hakusho and Rurouni Kenshin averaged around 16-17% in ratings.

Some anime, like Detective Conan and One Piece, have recently been taking numerous breaks and airing rather irregularly, so that probably had some hand in the loss of viewership.

Overall, I'd say the lower ratings are being caused by a variety of reasons. One of them is probably due to the Internet, video games, and other forms of entertainment. I think I remember reading an article that stated that 92% of fifth graders surveyed said that they had some kind of gaming system.

A second reason could be a lack of mainstream manga titles. For the past few years, I don't think there's been a new manga title that has emerged as a top seller except for the usual ones. Sure, there have been ones like D.Gray-Man and Gintama, but they've met with moderate success at best. The best selling ones, like One Piece and Naruto, are usually the only ones that become primetime anime. Without any new ones coming in, anime is losing those primetime slots to variety and drama shows, and that means lower ratings in general for anime.

Destinyblade: Interesting stats. I've read a lot about the 'doomsday' predictions about the decline of anime and these ratings look like a good measure. But then again, there's more and more shows out there and the quality keeps rising so obviously it's still making gobs of money.

I guess the real question is, is anime becoming more and more of a niche thing in Japan where otaku are squeezed more and more for profits, or has it still retained a wide audience?
