For some reason, MAL is counting a pre-airing event on 4/14 as the "premiere" since they'll be showing episode 1 there. The first public showing will be on 4/22.

You often see logos and buttons worked upon in the production materials to maintain consistency between animators. I've seen those from production images from KyoAni, P.A. Works, and J.C. Staff from works in years past.

Well regarding the source material, I just read a few parts of volume 1. The mystery was so so, though I'm still very eager to see how it pans out for the rest of the seasons.

Well, yeah .. the mystery is more like about their daily life, it's not some crime mystery, I think. Though, that's kinda why I am interested in the first place.

Too bad there's not much lead to the source material at this point. Quite an obscure title they really picked up here.

The visuals of Hyouka really appeal to me. Very subdued colors for a Kyoani show. Mostly black and white, some brown and dark blue as a primary color. Film noir influences as it's a mystery show?

Character design is quite interesting as well. The lead girls resemble the recent "Kyoani style" but it's not by K-on's Horiguchi I think. Male lead is fairly different as well.

I haven't read up on the source material, is it set in the present day? Some images look quite retro.

The character designer is Nishida from Nichijou and Haruhi-chan. He's also been heavily involved in the process for the other Haruhi titles from 2009/2010. The source material never really had designs for the characters, so he's had to design everyone from scratch (the first cover had some designs, but were somewhat re-conned with the switch of publishing divisions).

From what I can tell, the story takes place around the year 2000.

Thanks for the info. Original designs nice, they haven't done any since Munto iirc.

To varying extents each series requires some amount of original designs for background characters like classmates, but this is the first time since Munto where major and minor characters have needed to be designed.

Excerpt from an Comptiq Interview with Futoshi Nishiya(character design) and Shoji Gatoh(series composition). Some interesting points:

Spoiler for Character's personalities:

(These information assumes you know the basic premise of the show and basic personalities of the characters (i.e. as depicted on the Character page at the Kyoani website)

Nishiya:
- While reading the novel, was grinning at the strange chemistry between Hotaro and Eru.
- Director told her to concentrate on making eyes that convey lots of emotions.
- Aside from the main four, Nishiya says to watch out for Fuyumi(CV: Yukana) and Tomoe(Hotaro's sister. CV: Satsuki Yukino).

Gatoh:
- While waiting for this to air, wondering if he did everything that can be done. Waiting for the verdict of the heavens...
- Impression of the work before production: Weird title. Thought it was a horror novel. Bit surprised it turned out to be a adolescent story.
- Thought "Animating this was going to be difficult".
- Because the novel is packed with information, he always had to think about prioritizing content while writing, factoring in the drama of the characters, then the mystery parts, etc...

On the main Characters:

On Hotaro:
Nishiya: Look out for that different side of him when he's solving mysteries.
Gatoh: Though lackadaisical, has both a playful and sensitive side.

On Eru:
Nishiya: Yonesawa Honobu (original author) wanted Eru's design to have a hidden mysterious, melancholic side to her.
Gatoh: Working hard to make sure she isn't too pushy and overbearing.

On Satoshi:
Nishiya: A contrast to Hotaro. Not a very straight forward character.
Gatoh: Very complicated character so I'm working hard to make sure he doesn't come off as stereotypical.

On Mayaka:
Nishiya: Wants to give her a very cute smile since she seems so angry all the time.
Gatoh: A blunt girl, but sometimes not so much.

Theres also a Newtype excerpt, but it has not much of note, so not going to translate those.

That's held this Saturday. There's no way we could have impressions now.

On another note, Kadokawa has released the first four novels on their BOOK☆WALKER e-book platform. I'd say it's even more likely we'll only see those four novels adapted in this series.
