Anime with strong, mature characters

Would you recommend me anime with strong, mature and charismatic characters? For you to better understand which characters I mean I’ll just mention my current favorites. These would be Harlock (Captain Harlock), Shoryu (Juuni Kokki), Hiko Seijuro (Ruroni Kenshin), Tsukikage Ran (Kazemakase Tsukikage Ran), Airi (Those Who Hunt Elves), Twilight Suzuka (Outlaw Star). All genres are welcomed with exception of shounen romances and/or high school dramas. I don’t dare to say those genres are bad, just not to my liking.

Have you seen Trigun? It's awesome. Mature character as lead.

Yes, few years ago. Liked it very much. Thanks, anyway. Trigun is a kind of anime I'd recommend to any anime otaku.

Did you try the new series called Monster? Just saw the first 2 eps, seems pretty good.

You could give NOIR a try or even Gunslinger Girls. (The plots are quite interesting to say the least!!)

If you like Harlock, watch Galaxy Railways, Matsumoto's latest stuff. Same universe, has some really good characters and a wonderful story. The story runs at a good pace even though some of his other works can run a little slow like the latest Harlock series.

I have to agree with the Monster suggestion. Only two episodes fansubbed so far but it is turning out rather good.

Shingetsutan Tsukihime comes to mind w/ Arc...
FMP: Fumoffu? stretches the word "mature" [Sagara] in a completely different direction...
Galaxy Railways is very good. Very strong characters, each with his/her own drive.
Witch Hunter Robin [licensed] has Amon.

Last Exile would be a great choice. Plenty of mature characters in it, and the character development is also excellent.

I would have to say Gungrave, its mature in the sense of the characters and story although the it is a "good fella's" meets "science fiction" kind of story, theres no sweat marks, spiral eyes, or toppling over in this one just a great watch.

2nd choice is Gasaraki same as above The characters are mature and the story is very intrigueing give it a try.

Cheers
