I am 100% routing for Ichika's beautiful romance with Charles as a boy. I mean... girl. Whatever, Ichika can just imagine Charles to still be a boy even after the secret will be exposed.
How would she be a miscast? Laura is not very interactive and has a cool aura. She can easily use her deep voice (kuroneko but deeper) would be perfect for laura.

Right now Ichika's got a peer his same gender, and the school's in a pandemonium state with all the girls going gaga and googoo for Charles bishounen-ness.
Things first. Enjoying this show also means to me getting acquainted with the terminology and technical specs for the IS as well. Hence, paying attention as well to the tiniest of details during the matches will help to keep and engage in conversation with the rest of you guys at this sub-forum.
The least I can say for the class match is that at both her time and prime Maya-sensei surely was a hell of a devil sniper and combatant, though Chifuyu-sensei still strikes terror and reverence for all the former IS combatants that fought her in her era, and still in the present time continues to command respect upon the younger generations.
Now, getting into the chemistry part...

The best highlight for this episode have to be the lunch-break picnic.
Houki's tsundere-ness keeps skyrocketing into deep space, while both Cecilia and Rin watch helplessly with jealosy at how she and Ichika did the "open-up-and-say-ah" coupling that Charles mentioned.
The chemistry is superb and sheds from the inside to the surface that all three girls are seriously in-love with Ichika. It's just too bad for them that their creator, that means the manga-ka, chose for Ichika to have a dense and thickheaded personality so as to prevent him from realizing that all those three girls are holding feelings for him.
Now, as for Charles....

There was something odd when the camera took a shot of him rolling from his torso and down to the waist. With odd I do not mean in the context of weird and off place, but 'odd' as in suspicious.
Like if I haven't realized the signs, but it's too early to say it. However, I found out quickly like the rest of you did.
And, finally, a new girl with a very strong substance in her character. Laura must be the lonely-wolf type, and she did not hide her obvious contempt for Ichika.
Why she hates him, I cannot understand for now.
I'm reading the manga, but I'm still almost at the same pace with it from the anime.
About the Charles discussion, it would be better if we kept the discussion related to events after this episode in marked spoiler tags. Yes, that includes "hinting", which has been extremely unsubtle so far. Thanks to your "hinting", I have a pretty good idea of what Charles might be, since you all've done quite a sweet job of eliminating some of the possibilities.
I can't see Charles as a Char, despite being blond.
Though Char did have that shower scene conversation with Germa. Germa it should be noted could tell when girls were interested in him and Char wasn't short of that sort of companionship.

Looks like a Rafael like the one Maya was using.
Since Charles' dad owns the company that makes them and they are supposed to be one of the best mass production IS designs, that wouldn't be unreasonable. Wether it's a custom job or just relying on switching out a variety of weapons is another matter though.

He's been racking up time in the IS, thanks to his harem adding three hours training to the day.
Whereas the girls that don't have their own units have to book time with the Academy's IS's if they can for extra training. So they may know more in theory, he has the opportunity to have more practical experience.
Remember he was surprised Houki had managed to get permission to use one of the Trainer ISs to train him.
Regarding this is harem anime, there is few options here:
- MC needs to dense so the harem pace can keep up, but eventually chose one / all.
- MC can be all going so he can be playboy and do the drama on all girls in that school (may be including Chifuyu nee ).
- MC can be realize to all girls fall for him, but in the end he is being vague with his choice and eventually a girl/s kill him.

I'm the same as you, I don't know the source material so everything is new. But you know, that shadow between Charles' chest when 'he' introduced himself practically jumped into my eyes.

hmm... that’s quite debatable.
It is usually more about chemistry amongst the cast but whether character is a wuss in a harem series they usually develope a backbone in trying to protect the heroine even if they are weaker, cliché yes but that’s the usual route.
While Harem lead might share different personality. Their goals are the same.
This however will never change: Dense -> indecisive-> face palm when it's about romance.
on-topic I'm rooting for Laura Bodewig one of the best entrance I've seen in a while.
