There have been (low-quality) subtitled AVI versions since at least July of 2001. At least, that's the date on my files.

yeah, those must have been the ones I saw.

But yeah, I haven't seen Panyo Panyo... but I'm guessing it doesn't have the same sense of humor the original series had? ^^
I really like the manga, too... it's cool to see different artists' stories and style of drawing...

Keep up the good work and I can't wait to see the rest of the series! *^-^*

Well, it's a kid's show. The stories are lame little kid's TV stories, not even interesting. The visual style is different - it's got that kid's show style, kind of lumpy and cheap - but not crude and hilarious like the original show. The humor is too... polite, it's like the characters all had lobotomies. There are no cool/goofy fanboys, no Rabi~en~Rose *sobs*

In other words it's like if you were in hell and wanted to see Di Gi Charat, this is what they would make you watch...

Licensed by ADV, btw; I can't recommend anyone buy it. If you won't take my word for it, go look at The Internet's first Panyo Panyo Di Gi Charat fansite, where the guilty are named....

I only went into this musty old thread to post this link: Return of Di Gi Charat! to Fansubs and let anybody reading this know that the original Di Gi Charat series of 16 5-minute eps. is being resubbed and rereleased by Nyo Coalition.

It looks like Broccoli/Synch-Point is going to release the Di Gi Charat Movie (Vol.10 of the original series) first. http://www.synch-point.com/production/index.html I guess they want to see how it does in the US before thinking of what to do with the other episodes and series.

I used to love Di Gi Charat for some odd reason... I have all the original R2 DVDs up to vol.9... >_>

There is a thread in the Licensed forum discussing the movie and speculating on Synch-Point's other plans.

I can't see why you hate to love Di Gi Charat... I think one day it will be considered an otaku-style classic.

IIRC, Di Gi Charat was a skit in a larger show, so they can't license it without licensing a bunch of other stuff as well.

Watched the new release episode 2 just the other day. The new subs are nice quality. It's great to revisit the debut of Rabi~en~Rose, she is quite the oblivious character.

One thing I remember about this first series is the concise rendering of the developing relationships. Given the brevity of the episodes and series it was a good strategy to reveal the characters in the context of the rest of the cast.

Well, Digiko has two fans collectively named "bukimi" (just wait for it), Puchiko has a fan she calls Longe-san, and Rabi~en~Rose of course has a fan named Minagawa Takurou. The three main characters also have to try to get along together. And of course there's Gema, and the storekeeper. And OMG - Abarenbou...

So there is a fair-sized cast here. And there is about 68 minutes (80 min. minus the OP sequences) to do anything with them. Mostly what you get is quick sketches of the characters interacting, which tells you plenty about each of them as well as what they think of each other. It may not seem like much to read it but this sort of thing takes damn long to do in other series...

Nyo Nyo Nyo Nyo Nyo! Broccoli-nyo! Yes, I too was forced to watch horrible quality rms of this back in the day. I never knew it wasn't licensed, so I was quite surprised to see this on animesuki. A big thank-you to Nyo Coalition for resurrecting the forgotten princess. ^__^ Except...what happened to the "Broccoli-nyo" bit at the very beginning? ;___;

I agree, thanks Nyo Coalition for releasing this classic show.

For such a tiny dustspeck of an anime it sure gained a LOT of fans. Nyu.

What's this about the movie being volume 10? What does that mean?

Kowai Omise?!

Episode 3 is truly amazing - the debut of Minagawa Takurou, a great character... his fateful meeting with Rabi~en~Rose... the perilous quest for Iron Leg Johnny trading cards...

Can't wait for 'Party Night'.

The only show so far that has an MV that's an episode long ^_^

It's so fun watching the antics of Digiko and Usada. ^_^

P.S. has anyone by any chance played DGCharat Fantasy?

oh BTW... I think choco released a set of DGCharat shorts a while ago... it consisted to the summer breaks and the movie I think.

I've read the short strories based on Di Gi Charat Fantasy because they're in the 4th volume of the manga from Viz....which I own...despite the fact that it hasn't been released yet....which I am unable to explain.

Vol.1 & 2 - The original 3 min episodes (One fansubbed right now)
vol.3 & 4 - Summer special ep 1-4
vol.5 - Christmas Special
vol.6 & 7 - Ohanami (Spring/cherry blossom) special ep 1-4
vol.8 & 9 - Summer vacation special ep1-4
vol.10(?) - The movie

I'm not sure if it's called vol.10, but the limited edition Di Gi Charat R2 movie DVD supposedly came with a box that holds the first 9 volumes and itself. I wish I had that so I can at least sell mine as a complete set or trade it for another series... but it'll probably cost as much to get that, as to sell the whole set at a used price... ^^;

Which hasn't been released? The manga from Viz or DGC Fantasy?

Natsuyasumi was pretty good. It had a bus ride to hell and a scary American Digiko wannabe and a couple other gags.
