Clarste mentioned the important bits, but Kirito had also practiced with swords when he was young (mentions this to Silica regarding his imouto). Although his grandfather's strict attitude ultimately turned him away from kendo he was still interested in swords and it is probably why he chose to use them in SAO. He had practiced with a shinai so a sword would naturally feel the closest or natural of all the weapons.

My guess is that swords are the most common quest rewards in SAO (it is called Sword Art Online), so as the floors go up you will definitely get a good sword from quest/drop and don't need to train a new skill.
Continuing with quests, in First Day he chose to do the quest for the Anneal Blade. As a beta tester he definitely tried out many quests, but he still chose to do the quest for Anneal Blade, the reason being it could be used up to the 3rd floor. He most likely used 1h swords in the beta as well, so in the death game SAO has become, entrusting your life to a familiar weapon is vital.

You mean his only motive - MO in the law enforcement context is the acronym for modus operandi, which is Latin for "What is this guy's preferred method/mode of operation?"
...it's complicated. Spoiler for Spoilers aheard:

It would have been funny if someone attempts Sleep-PK only to activate Anti-Harassment instead. XD
