Why did I expect something like Akagi but got a wet t shirt contest?
Oh well, what I even don't understand is that it's licensed, yet nobody cares about Akagi? It's better from a mahjong point of view... |

I wouldn't mind getting enlightened, because I can't see it's forced .

And not like because it's also talking about Mahjong means it has to be Akagi. They're different in so many parts that I don't know where to start.

But you know it's true. I couldn't take the first ep seriously of Saki, yet Akagi just pulled me in right away. It was all about mind crushing mahjong, Saki just seems like a moe-fest with GONZO even ruining a maybe enjoyable manga with their fanservice overtone.

Can't you enjoy different series for different reasons? The aim of Saki is obviously not to provide an elementary education in mahjong, the mahjong is merely a premise for character interaction (much like Shion no Ou).
Akagi may be better in its focus on mahjong, but that doesn't make it qualitatively better. I'm liking Saki's characters so far, even though if you look back a couple of pages I was talking about how cookie-cutter some of them seem to me. |

Of course, I should know "it's true", because you're absolutely right . And ruining the manga? Did you even read it?

a small clue: its not about mahjong akagi could have just as well been about poker, blackjack, rock-paper-scissors, baseball and basically any other thing you could compete with and not change one bit. akagi was a gambling anime, mahjong was nothing more then a tool. a VERY VERY INSIGNIFICANT TOOL. complaining about akagi's mahjong being "better" is nothing more then being biased. |

Also, tangentially related, here is a video of some absolutely absurd mahjong play. (It appears to be a flaw in the randomizer program or manipulated score data at times.) Last edited by bayoab; 2009-04-07 at 16:11. |

Just want to say that there will be a Mahjong arcade game based on the Saki anime; I wonder how good the AI of this arcade game would be.

As for the yuri part, well, the yuri aspect in the manga is not as "strong" as in the anime (I haven't read all of the manga); the rain scene where Saki catch Nodoka when Nodoka fell because she ran too fast is added into the anime; Nodoka did not ran and fell in the manga, therefore Saki couldn't catch her and make it looks like they are hugging each other. As for the first episode, I like it very much. I think the next future episodes will be even more awesome, because interesting characters will be introduced and (hoping that) Saki's background will be revealed. |
