(L) Negima Manga Discussion

Given the hints in the manga, I'm assuming *some* interesting similarities are ahead for Asuna (recall her staring oddly at the pic of Negima's dad) - but outside of that I'm clueless. I'm just sorry they used the big demon fight in the anime series the way they did because if they do the Kyoto arc in a second season its going to seem oddly familiar. I do hope there's a second season... but I'll bet it jumps ahead to cover the Festival and introduces our missing characters there somehow. I'm assuming the 2 ep OVAs are probably going to cover the Baron's visit.

I'm just hoping there's some opportunity for focus on Kaede, Tatsumiya and company --- as well more advancement in the Yue-Nodoka thread .... and, what the hell, more Setsuna-Konoka comedy yuri.

Aghrrr! For God Sake! They better not do any more Negima anime! It's simply too bad. Better stick with the manga only for now on.

@Tiberium : they'd better not make MORE ANIME that is as CRAPPY as the first "season". However, if they can redeem themselves and make a decent OVA, then I can tolerate a second Negima anime season.

And yes, I definitely agree with you that for now, the manga is the definitive source for Negima-goodness (as it has always been!)

Hello? Anybody home?

Well things have gotten really interesting the last few chapters (130-135), focusing on Chao

First Chao lets it slip that she's transferring out of Mahora Academy and going home (which is allegedly very far away), then when Negi tries to ask her about it (after being informed by the mages), she challenges him to a duel, in which she kicks his arse big time (looks like Negi's magic is no match for Chao's technology). Then Setsuna and Kaede intercede, but are still no match for Chao, who later hauls in Mana and Chachamaru as her own reinforcements. But Setsuna has her own ace up her sleeve - the rest of Class 3A, who have an impromptu send off party for Chao (very typical of them oh and they shower her with gifts too, from books to posters to CD's, to Ayaka's huge Bust (i.e. carved head statue) of Chao). Then during this party Chao lets out her big secret

In an amazing concurrance with those like me who looked into the "descendant" angle on Chao's relationship with Negi, Chao admits she's from 100 years in the future and is a descendant of Negi. And what's more (and I actually theorized on this) she admits she's from Mars, and that in her time Mars is inhabited by humans (i.e. Chao lives in a Mars colony). Although most of the class think she's joking (but those who are in on the Mages thing know that she's not kidding).

After the party and most of 3A is wasted (it's nighttime by now), Negi gets one last talk with Chao, who says she's actually going to leave noon the next day, and also talks about her main reason for being here - to try and change history, mentioning the supposed death of Negi's dad, and the burning village where Negi supposedly met him, then she vanishes.

I'm actually a bit concerned:

about the amount of importance time travel seems to be playing in the story because it is incredibly easy to totally screw up a story with time travel. And if we have someone running around *trying to change history* --- for all I know she vanished after she told him what she did because she succeeded in changing the timeline and squicked her existence. Very few authors handle time travel well and unless Ken has been taking causality physics, I'd prefer he stick to cute girls and combat magic.

Does the time travel have to be "realistic" (quoted because, of course, we have no idea how it actually works anyway)? I mean, it's a story about a ten year old wizard teaching english to 14 year olds. Realistic left the turnpike aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaages ago. I'm fine with the time travel as long as it's limited to Chao's story. If it starts to be just about time travel though, that'll kind of suck.

Even within a "magic" setting, time travel is tough to pull off without screwing up (whatever fictional theory one subscribes to). Frankly, if they can fix anything wihout worrying about causality - the story goes poo because anyone can be saved, mistakes rectified .... kind of like when the transporter/holodeck in Star Trek ended up being "cuisinart of all problem resolutions" instead of being a device of limited ability. If she is from the future, I'm almost surprised she isn't rated "KOS" by the mage clan for wanting to change history.

The time travel device goes with this arc. It was a neat idea as far as it went, but it obviously doesn't really work very well all the time. If it did, Chao would have been able to leave long before. I expect the most likely outcome is that the watch will probably stop functioning after the World Tree dies down again. Time travel just seems to be Chao's "thing", like being a part of the bird tribe is Setsuna's thing, being a ninja is Kaede's thing, being a ghost is Sayo's thing, etc etc.

Also if Chao is 100 years from the future is she more likely to be Negi's grand daughter or great grand daughter?

As Akamatsu is sticking to the One Timeline Only theory, it is necessary that Chao doesn't know the specific details of what happened in the past. She's going to try and change it, but History has already been laid down in the One Timeline theory and she's part of that history. History won't be changed - what will happen is Chao learning about the past that she wants to change, in much greater detail.

Now, as for Ch 136 - Eva's resort has turned into the "RPG Menu Screen to check out party details and plan ahead while suspending time" location ^^;; Or actually, I prefer to view it in the Strategy/RPG "Intermission Screen" sense since the number of characters has gone beyond standard RPG party sizes.

You should definitely check out the cover page for the latest chapter (136).

The cover page for that chapter features “the side of good” aka Negi, his Minstra Magi, and a few other students. If the picture is a sign of things to come, then it looks like two things will happen:

1. Haruna and Chisame will become Ministra Magi by the time the Festival comes to an end (in fact, it’s likely that Haruna has become one already, considering how we didn’t see what happened in between her second attempt at a Pactio and Negi and Konoka’s jump back in time to check out Asuna’s date, not to mention that Chamo mentions “Yue’s group” instead of just “Yue” when he told Negi to keep quiet about Yue’s Pactio for now);

2. Yue’s Pactio item may actually be the Orbis Sensualium Pictus book that Diaphanus mentioned.

Personally, I do hope that Haruna’s Pactio has already happened, as it would definitely prove a theory that I have involving the cover page of chapter 38 (aka the chapter in which Nodoka receives the Diarium Ejus, and Kotarou is introduced to the story).

The anime and the manga in which it may follow the same storyline are totally different. So if 2nd Season for Negima would to come out, they might as well change the name to something different. Negi VA = a Girl voice ^-^. "so sad"

eh? are you confusing the first season and the upcoming season?
Frankly, if thy just pick up at the pre-Festival, they can completely ignore the storyline problems of the first season. ... and Negi's VA has always been a girl (though I admit a slighter deeper voice that cracks would have been preferable).

Anyway, since they depict the stuff to all be happening at the same time, it isn't completely oblivious to "time travel". Since he makes the jump at different points in time, the observer Negi is in fact where all the other Negis end up going anyways (I remember them seeing themselves just before a time jump...)

In any case, how long is this manga planned to run?
Ohhhs, I bought vol. 2 today, yay!

Nope. All that happens is that the two "Negis" or other people will just interact with each other. This has already happened twice in the manga:

Chapter 125: When older Negi and his crew take Ako back to the concert area in order for her to make it to her concert with the cheerleaders, she and Madoka, who is looking for Ako with the earlier Negi, are surprised to see two older Negis, two "bishie" Kotarous, two "chibi" Chisames, and two "usagi" Chachamarus.

Chapter 129: Just when Chamo is about to head to Library Island to help Konoka, Nodoka, and Yue deal with the situation that is Haruna finding out about Negi's secret, he bumps into his future self, who, along with Negi and Konoka, went back in time to check out Asuna's date with Takahata. It results in a funny moment where the two ermine high five each other.
